I love my D4. Auto switches for battery types, even LifePo. It's high rate charge is 750 mA so really not that high. A very good rate IMO. Once you put 3+ batteries in it the charge rate drops to 1/2 that. (375 mA) No worries as far as I'm concerned.

I just use a safety pin. Not much to worry about on the other side but the holes can clog. Pretty rare actually. Using a toothpick runs the risk of breaking pieces into the holes..?
