The fact that it is hundreds of degrees cooler is actually a problem. The only reason the o-rings stay cool enough is the fact that we have a very concentrated heat source near the tip that heats it quickly. This means the heat doesn't have time to reach the o-rings. If you heated the tip with a...

While I agree that it would remove some thermal mass from the system it still seems like it's cost saving/production streamlining measure. Cutting the material differently can make big changes in ease of manufacturing. The smaller slots are harder to machine and the tiny cutter used would be...

It seems like it's cost saving as it would reduce the machining time per cycle. IMO the 7 fin Gen 4 is much much more attractive than the 5 fin Gen 5. It makes me glad that I still have two brand new Gen 4 tips as they look much more refined and might never be sold again with 7 fins. It feels...

Your lid was the prototype! I didn't think of doing a second set of grooves until I was testing out my router settings on some scrap wood. I ran the router on all the sides and didn't mind the way it looked when the grooves crossed over. That's an Elm stem using the end grain rather than...

I probably would have scrapped it to be honest. I like the triple hole idea though!

Is it obvious though? Take a look at the Vapcap again. It's a hybrid of conduction and convection. I've noticed that hitting higher temperatures is sometimes what makes or breaks a strain. Some just don't produce much vapour until 430F, and this is the weak spot for the Vapcap as it doesn't...

It allows you to remove the cap with the magnet in the lower half as well as extending the length of stem that can be made with my tiny lathe. I often find myself wanting to inspect my vapcap load mid session so I thought it would be handy to have a magnet built into a stem. Edit:Another way it...

It might be a bit chunky but it works exactly how I wanted it to. What a great prototype!

Whew! That was quite a marathon in the shop, but my prototype is done. I have come a long way from the drawing I did a few months back. I gave it a test drive and it hits like a champ! Over all I'm very happy with it besides it being a bit chunky, I'm sure that I can slim it down in quite a few...

Finally the magnets I ordered so long ago have arrived! I can start to make some much longer stems now. I'll be prototyping today and see what I have by the end of the night.

I find that the mouth piece makes for a much better portable experience than without. The lip groove makes it so much more comfortable during use. Keep in mind that the mouth piece can get in the way if your rig has a small opening or a sharp bend just past the glass joint. I think you will...

Thanks! I've only got one plank of this stuff and it's nothing short of magical. I think the best use of it is making small items like this. It would be wasted on stems and bodies as the figuring is too wide and the wood is too soft.

What you're experiencing is normal. The Cap was originally calibrated for Ti tips that have less mass than the Stainless steel. This means that the Ti tip will be at the correct temperature at the click while the SS tip is cooler than is desired. Heating past the click is my recommendation...

I'm glad to see both pieces arrived safe and have been put to good use! Do you load those all up at once then use through out the day? It's been good stepping away from the lathe for a bit while I'm waiting for parts to arrive. These boxes have been really fun and refreshing to make.

The beauty of the steel core in my pieces is that the "scrap pile" really doesn't grow or exist. I remove the failed wood blank, (usually in a very destructive manner) and reuse the steel core in a new piece.

Does the Nona VonG only wobble in the glass in one direction? You can check this by rotating the VonG in the glass and seeing if the direction of the wobble follows the rotation. If it remains in the same direction despite rotating it is not the VonG but the glass. More than likely it's the...
