Yeah, other occupations are more dangerous, but mostly because of bad accidents. The thing with the police is that they are put into, or have to put themselves into very dangerous situations, often with no time for any forethought.

If MB wasn't about to harm someone, the officer could just call for backup. If he thought MB was armed, wouldn't he think his buddy might be armed also. Why risk getting shot by his friend to pursue MB.
