Well the soaking water absorbs the terpenes (sp?) and other chemicals that help aid the removal of smell and taste. Although it can be done right after harvesting to have a quicker cure time.

Although I haven't tried it myself, I've heard about water curing, which basically removes the scent and flavor from weed. You should read into it and give it a try on a small about, then if it works, make another batch of brownies. Unfortunately, that doesn't make the high any less powerful...
