There are also some clips you can acquire that will clip the gong to the j-hook (don't ask me where to get the clips, not sure), effectively making it one-piece (albeit temporarily).

Generally best to use one of the gongs sold by epic, and mate it to either a 14 or 18mm female piece of your choice.....

I tried the same thing with the screen on the upper lip, and got the same result you did. Stock works way better for me. I too think that @WakeAndVape has a unit which has the second rim lower in the bowl than mine. Simply wouldn't work for me with the screen in the upper position.
