@CameraNerd have you tried other water levels? On a regular torus you typically need to be filled up to the bottom of the funnel portion so I think that the level in your video is far too low.

The main purpose is to move an e-nail further from your face and to protect the joint of expensive glass from heat. Collecting reclaim is more of a side effect, but a pleasant one.

Kinda looks like the Chinese ones have rounded edges whereas the HE ones do not. Kinda hard to make out how thick the Chinese are exactly, but you're probably right.

Glass is glass, there's nothing unsafe about it. There are potential moral problems regarding possibly unsafe shops and/or child labour in China, however these are purely speculation. Basically unless you make a point to only buy stuff made in America you are probably already using made in China...
