I'm experimenting with different water temperatures and warm or almost-hot water seems to be a lot smoother than cold water. In fact, the warm water actually feels colder than the cold water, for some reason. Why does this effect occur exactly?

3, maybe 3 and 1/4 is pretty much my max. Any more than that and it feels too hot. I seem to notice the most variation when switching between 1:30 and 3.

It depends how much I load. If I load like 1/8 - 1/6 of the ELB, I usually only get one really cloudy hit and the rest are pretty wispy or sometimes have practically no visible vapor. If I load 1/4 - 1/3, I can get 2 to 4 very cloudy and potent hits usually. Have not tried loading more than 1/3...
