I think it's standard procedure (and actually a nice gesture imo) that they offer you a trade in deal so you can upgrade to TM2 at a discount. But i don't think that means that they can't fix your old unit. Possibly under warranty (since the OG has 10 years warranty) or maybe the warranty...

I think you have answered your question here? The TM is relying on convection heating. So you need to draw air thru the heater so the heated air can cook the herb. If you are not drawing air thru it there will be little to no heat transfer and since the coil doesn't touch any metal there's...
