the purity/quality of your starting material is the biggest factor in how often you will want to replace your coils. the ceramic coils can last many months with proper care, and some folks can make qdc last a long time too. I am too lazy, and coils are cheap (and I love the taste of clean coils)...

Pretty sure that the only units that contained a Teflon heat shield near the heating element were the very first runs of the original boost (the one that comes with the battery built-in). Since then, everything has been ceramic top, including both of the links above.
