Yeah that could be an issue with thinner plates, have you tried hard wood like oak? I still want to try phenolic plastic but I have not gotten there yet.

Not sure how big you plates are but I use 1/2" plywood with a 3/8" hole in the middle. Then cut a half inch long chunk of 3/8" bolt and stuff it in the hole. This will keep it from over crushing the plywood and still not transfer much heat into the press. Too much pressure will push oil...
