i've seen it with american glass companies a few times. by breaking the piece and taking pictures, the company doesnt have to pay for return shipping. Plus they know it's destroyed so they only have to replace that item once (people are scammers and will try and get multiple replacements for 1...

i believe he had to destroy it to get a replacement sent, not uncommon.
