You don't need to take the silicone off to use it. I left mine on for awhile just incase I ever used the vcb again. It makes the seal on the tapered end of the wand and never comes close to touchin the silicone.

You probaly don't have the screen in all the way then. There's a little lip that the screen sits under. I couldn't get it at first either and had problems.
