Yes you can as the actual ceramic bowl is underneath and above is silicone and metal threading which does not get very hot.

Keep in mind with the v5 series I find I can vape all day without having to recharge since there are 2 18650 batts. It would be nice if the 18650 batts could be replaced more easily though.

I don't think it's common. I have a lot of friends with the original FM as well as the 5s and I'm the only one with issues which were really my fault. I do believe I've seen a couple problems mentioned in this thread though so it does happen.

Well the car charger I had was not the same spec as the Flowermate charger. It was just 12v car charger with a wire spliced that fit the Flowermate. Was your charger the same specs or different?
