Not sure what kind of other hardware you have access too, but any chance you know how/have the ability to read the Solo's thermistor? The T+/T- points on the board connect directly to the leads of it. Many high quality multimeters are capable of reading this probe directly.

Looks like those are based off of IR. You'll need to have a line of sight between the transmitter and receiver to get it to work.

How full are you packing your stems? What happens if you stir and then start hitting the stem again after it starts petering off? Does it show on the LED's that it is staying at temp? And when you say it's getting cold, do you just mean that in a relative way or does it really get cold enough...

It's an all purpose rust/corrosion remover, so what it does it dissolve the corroded metal away while coating the top of it in an oxide resistant layer to prevent further spread.

Sounds just like general corrosion. See if you can get some Naval Jelly at your local hardware store and apply it the spot. It's not a reason to dispose of the battery, if it still works through the corrosion. Do you live in a particularly humid area?
