I just use the plug from my iPad or iphone

Mine has never flashed red and blue in the same blink sequence when charging. It has only blinked red when charging, and only blue when charged. Never both red and blue. Have you contacted HL yet? It should not be doing that.

Mine never has made a clicking sound at all. I've also never seen red and blue lights blinking. Mine just went black when it died. It definitely sounds like you have a charging malfunction or motherboard problem going on, probably not at the plug, but in the vape unit itself.

We did throughout the trip. Plugged into both a car lighter USB and plugged into the wall or a PC at night if we felt the need. It always has to have some charge to use it that way.

I've had mine (SS) for a few weeks now. Have had no problems - I've even dropped it a few times. It is used heavily daily, pretty much always on Setting 5. Cleaned it twice in that time. I must admit, I haven't wanted to use anything else since I got it.
