Well I personally think its due to the ceramic cup/wick being pressed against the gong. Therefore the wick just pulls it outward. I actually think that hitting it upside down helps it go back to the top and the wick sucks some of it back up. I can still hit it even when the center is out of oil...

Thanks for the idea on an extender. Such an easy solution I never thought of. Those posts do look almost the same except the coil wraps around more then the once from BHOLT. Bholt coil you can only see wraps around 3 times.
