Those are the kinds of variables that would make each unit a bit different on the temp dial, which is the point I was trying to make. The variables I was referring to above were external variables.

This is proof positive that different units can vary in how hot they get at the same setting on the temp dial. I'm assuming all other variables (draw speed, strain, packing, etc) were the same. Thank you for confirming that!

Is there a trick to getting them to work well? When I tried one I got no vapor at all. Seemed like the air flow went right around the capsule.

I did the same experiment last night and came the the same conclusion. Though I confess I tested "remove nuts and washer" at the same time as "leave some space between the two halves of the CU". After the vapor proved much hotter, I reversed both modifications.

Barring an actual defect, it sounds like your dial is calibrated higher than typical for some reason. In other words you get similar results working in a dial window of 1-4 as others get from say 4-7 or 4-8. In the old FC thread people talked of a special menu that lets you calibrate that...
