Good question... and to be honest, I haven't sorted through all of the physics to be completely satisfied with the explanation for why the black is more efficient than the white. But, it has nothing to do with the firmware at all--just coincidental that we upgraded the firmware at the same time...

Personally, I don't like to grind. Part of that is laziness. Why go through the extra step of grinding if I don't have to?...and, I hate cleaning grinders. In general for convection-based devices, the physics would indicate that you get better extraction efficiency with grinding AND tamping...
