The butane taste likely wouldn't come from low quality butane, but rather having a faulty lighter. its hard for liquid butane to survive the flame and the heat to actually deposit enough residue to cause the taste to change. most people anxious about butane vapes have that same concern, just...

Honestly, it IS easier to control than the flip brick(for me anyway)...hard to actually say that because of my strong feelings towards SBL...but I much prefer the Flam to the Flip. but thats also because i am heavy handed with flame vapes and the delicacy needed to ride the line with the flip...
