You are correct... I placed the unit vertical on a table, let it warm up (green) and waited for it to go on standby (blue). Without moving the device, I barely touched the mouthpiece and the light went from blue to purple and warmed up again.

I think they are detecting the motion of you bringing it to your mouth with the accelerometer and not pressure on the mouthpiece. Edit: you are correct, it does detect pressure...
