I've never used a 510 atty for vaporizing herb. I do use an ecig, though. I dont think you can use temp control on a coil that isn't wet. I think the glass rod would keep the coils from glowing so you could use temp control with the stempod. Maybe I was just super high last night.

What if you wrapped your coil around a 3 or 4 mm glass rod? Using like 22 ga SS316. The glass rod obviously needs be around 22mm long to fit on the deck. I think this is the basis for the vape critics new heater. Would this work on a stempod?
