Hello! This is my first thread so apologies if I've set it up wrong, or started it in the wrong section, just let me know. I couldn't find another thread like this through the search function so I figured I'd start one. Edited for grammar.
I'm curious what you all think of fictional fantasy worlds having dry herb vapes and culture surrounding them. Is anyone else here a writer, or an artist, doing worldbuilding like that?
I have a fiction story I'm writing set in a world where the characters are all anthropomorphic animals, and smell plays a large roll in how they communicate. I'm writing it with cannabis being as dominant as alcohol is here, at least in some areas of their world, with alcohol being less often heard of or consumed. Naturally they love vaping and have vapor lounges that act kind of like bars - but with a culture more centered around the giggly zen experience of weed. Vaping indoors would be pretty normal in casual, intimate settings, and in more structured settings like public buildings I'm still playing around with it. Maybe anywhere there's the public coffee maker (break rooms, lobbies) you can vape as well? Or to prevent second-hand vaping there might be designated areas, sort of akin to smoking and non-smoking sections. I do think there would be a word for a vapor lounge as well, that it would be just one word and not two, though I'm not great at building words like that. They vape all kinds of herbs, and along with the tea bags at the coffee maker there's often jars or pre-packaged pouches of herbal vaping mixes like green tea, peppermint, etc.
The cultural aspects are one thing, but designing fantasy dry herb vapes is another and is really fun! There's a magic system in this world and as a part of it there are golems made of light that can be enchanted to hang around your vape and, at your indication, flow into the herb chamber directly to blast it with infrared radiation. This gives it a perfectly even cook, depending on how playful the light golems get at least, and could be tuned to different wavelengths of light to experiment with how that might affect the herb and the high. Imagine having little neon-red ghosts heating up your flower for you! Desktop versions commonly have another light golem somewhere around the base that will sterilize the mouthpiece with ultraviolet light.
In this world vaping has been around for quite a long time, and a pretty common cheap type of non-magic vape is made entirely from clay ceramic. Similar to a Tempest, it would have a ball-filled chamber made from and filled with unglazed flameware ceramic, attached (threaded or friction-fit with a wooden collar coupling) to a chamber and a stem made from glazed stoneware / porcelain / terracotta. I'm actually really jazzed about this kind of design; I've drawn up plans for this and a desktop clay based vape design I want to make IRL (its own thread, someday soonish I hope). The design came to me from thinking about sustainability in dry herb vape design, and in this fiction universe it fits in nicely because vaping would predate the availability of materials like stainless steel and even glass. I wonder what the hits would be like? I wonder what the ramifications of vaping being that old would be? Things I'm still worldbuilding on and would love to hear thoughts about.
I've not thought much about how these designs would handle hash as I'm not experienced with hash myself, but I do think that would be a priority for them in-universe.
I hope this makes sense. I'm very curious if anyone else is doing worldbuilding like this, and if so, I'd love to hear what your world is like! :3 And if you'd like a fun question to bridge off: if you designed a dry herb vape made with magic what would it be like?
