How close are the sc3+ and the sc3 in performance. Im loving my dog enough i might want a second, smaller one for microdosing... VAS got me pretty bad on this drop.
I'd like to know this too since I'm a UD rookie and VAS is hounding me at the moment too. Not yet at the "All your dogs belong to me", but closer than I might prefer at the moment. It looks like a "dog toy" got teased on Insta, so maybe that's where your next pup is kenneled.

For my general use of flavor chasing microdosing, I have not noticed any difference in performance. Both heaters have done everything I’ve needed them to do so far. In fact, my very first Dog, purchased June 2020 as a Lost Dog, I didn’t even realize it was a SC3+ until I asked about the differences in the Alpha heaters. I really had never paid attention to the “plus” designation and checked the archives and saw mine was a SC3+ (btw, love the archive feature on the site @underdog). I think you’d have to be doing some serious back to back hits to notice any difference, but that’s based on me vaping by myself, idk about a vape circle performance. I’m pleased with both of the SC3 heaters, and I need to summon the courage to introduce my baby bird lungs to the power of the Alpha (I spend a lot of time admiring the Alpha in my hands though, taking baby bird steps). My Alpha heats up faster than my SC3 units and just seems to stare at me with those natural void eyes ready to go to work.

Edit: Still trying to wrap my head around the “plus” design as my SC3+ is the shortest of all my Dogs, I figured it would be taller than my SC3 units to allow for the longer air path?

Thanks so much for this detailed info! I ended up getting the morel-dog, which is a regular sc3. I absolutely love morels, and I just couldn't resist getting such a unique, beautiful piece that speaks to my love of both fine food and fine bud.

You’re welcome. And thank you for purchasing the morel-dog, I was close to buying it for the third time before I dozed off last night, you saved me from another late night bedtime VAS purchase. I think the wood on that one is going to age beautifully.

I’m sure @underdog will correct me but here’s the way I understand it.

SC3 is the standard heater core in a 3/8 SS tube.

SC3+ is the Alpha heater core in the same 3/8 SS tube.

Alpha is the Alpha heater in a larger diameter tube.

Alpha plus is the Alpha heater and tube diameter, but in a longer length tube.

Let’s see how close I got.

The only thing in there that i can correct is alpha+ has some extra mass in the heater compared to the alpha.

By definition, a tube of the same diameter, but a longer length, is also extra mass. I did read someplace the design was to allow a longer airpath to provide more time (and mass) to increase the heat 😉
I think, but am not 100% positive, that what theyre referring to by extra mass is extra mass in the cartridge itself within the tube, not of the whole heating system. Once again, not 100% on that, but it would explain why they specifically mention that it has higher mass than a regular alpha heater

When asked about the difference of alpha and alpha+ @underdog said:

The Alpha+ core has twice the airpath length to maximize heat exchange for the sake of higher performance. :science:

The Alpha+ has twice the length airpath to give the air more time/distance to heat up.. it's a higher performance 'stretch' version of the Alpha. The mass is considerably higher too of course so it needs a bit more soak time and maybe a .2v bump vs the Alpha.

I will say they're a pain to make and require a huge piece of wood so we probably won't make too many, too often.

Does anybody have the measurements for the inner and outer diameter of the alpha core? I really wanna put together a paper stem (big shoutout to @Alan for the idea) for my alpha+. The paper stems clog way less than glass or metal stems and have become my prefered DD stem.

Can we have an afternoon show-and-tell craft activity that focuses on learning how to make these ourselves?! Sounds downright fun!

Hahaha i mostly use the ones Alan already made me, cause i cant quite get mine to be as nice as his, but essentially you just need 3 gromits (silicone, cork, etc...) of the right diameter, some printer paper, and a screen. You have to cut the paper into rectangular strips, then pull the paper back and forth across a hard edge to get it to curl up. Then you roll it up, put it inside the gromits, and put the screen in. I prefer to use a glass mouthpiece with these, so you get all the benefits of the glass for comfort and flavor and all the benefits of paper at the site of roasting.

Heya Dogs, been super busy in the shop and answering messages but I'm still kickin..

The longer air path in the SC3+ and the Alpha is achieved by 'folding' it back along the length of the core instead of lengthening the core itself.

I’m sure @underdog will correct me but here’s the way I understand it.

SC3 is the standard heater core in a 3/8 SS tube.

SC3+ is the Alpha heater core in the same 3/8 SS tube.

I think you are close..

The SC3, SC3+ and Alpha all use the same heating element.
The SC3+ and Alpha have a double length air path via the folding method mentioned above.

The current gen Alpha+ uses a different heating element which is twice the length of the standard one.
Then it doubles that with the folding method so equates to approx 4x the air path length vs the standard Alpha.
Eventually it'll be tweaked into the same length as the standard Alpha and the rest of the cores in future iterations.

All SC series Dogs use a 3/8" diameter center tube.
All Alpha series Dogs use a 1/2" diameter center tube.

The Alpha center tube has a nominal OD and ID of .5" and .455" respectively.
