The HI

Im betting Curly Maple but we will see what Alan says.

It was kinda an EE post that got removed. I dm and was able to score.
It is satinwood and made in 2015. The same wood I used for one of @Shit Snacks roasting tubes, shown a couple of pages back. The bottom cap may be lignum vitae.
Thanks for posting the photos @Shit Snacks Hope you have had a chance to try all the different things in the package.
@GoldenBud - Thanks for posting the videos. Always so cloudy.
Thanks for posting the photos @darkstar72 Glad you are enjoying your HI. The double screen method is a great way to roast.
Still staying plenty busy with all the other things I make. The GTR is a new log style roaster with an 18mm male or female glass heater cover. Some of the roasting tubes for the HI work well in the male GTR.
Still have a batch of iHeat spiral coil heaters to make. Trying to get more square and bamboo HI's finished too. Always some piece part that needs to be made.

I didn't like the heater's screen, it made me tamp every bowl in the vapcap's tip, so.. tried to replace it with some new screens (Made in USA)

i find it better with the tip so it won't interfere with the bowl

Well after about 3 hours of exploration, I can say this is a beautiful piece and I’m unbelievably lucky to grab this one.

I do have some questions for @Alan about the stem and heater. This is an older model and is missing a ledge or oring. I haven’t made it far enough back into the 267 pages to see if this is normal or I’m missing a part.

which cover is it? i don't think HI has some oring? haven't seen here
it's definately a crazy looking HI imho, really like this one

Your picture about 3 posts ago shows a ledge on the heater shaft about a cm below the lip. The glass tubes rest on that? Mine doesn’t have it. See the picture just after the video on my post.

Yeah a steel ring, they didn't all used to have that, for the steel core, it does help to have a resting point for stems that go around the core, I'm sure Alan can send you one to add?

I just ordered some high heat orings from Ed for my Woodscents which uses them for the glass stems. I didn’t get any when I picked it up on EE. I also didn’t get screens for the HI but the one I had from the Woodscents fit the HI glass so I ordered extra of them from Ed. I’m betting I can use the oring instead of the steel rim.

Oh Ed uses actual rubber o-ring on a hot metal core?? I wouldn't want to myself

What size core do you have, the one that fits the dynavap, or the other? I have the other, and although the ledge is helpful (mine is actually just a retention clip that Alan has fashioned in there it appears) when using my UD glass stems that wrap around the core, my UD glass stems are such a perfect fit for my HI that the ledge is not necessary. My stems of choice for now until I get a custom HI are my UD stems and wpa that sit inside the core.

@4everpushingaboulder i found your unit in page 211 (tried randomly up to 2015, took me 5 guesses)
so, i checked my own other cover for the HI - this is it. you've got the 7/16 cover, not the 3/8 cover, Dynavap's one, there's no ring wrapping it... in mine, only the 3/8 seems to have the ring, it seems

TL;DR your cover is 7/16, Solo II stems compatible....no ring is placed

My dude you can get the ring on 3/8 size and 7/16 size, I have it on both of my standard cores in both size (used to be optional)

Well I looked at that unit on 211 and it’s the same wood but don’t think it’s the same unit, possibly same batch.

Mine is definitely 3/8. Measured with calipers and my Dynavap tips are too small.

we still don't know if 3/8 or 7/16 is meant to be ID or OD, need to wait for Alan, I checked mine, the DV tip is too small for the 7/16 but perfect for the 3/8

Ok. So now I’m stoned and this is funny.

My HI measures .37 inch OD (3/8) and .32 inch ID (5/16)

My Dyna Ti tip is also exactly .37 inch OD so it matches tip to tip but does not slide over or into the heater.

When I inquired and bought my 3/8” core HI back in March, Alan sent me this email that answered my question about the two available core sizes, hope this helps:

The 7/16" ss heater cover is actually the one that is compatible with the dynavap tips. A 3/8" ss roasting tube fits into the 7/16" ss heater cover. I only have the heavy duty cardboard HI's available with the 7/16" ss dynavap compatible heater covers until I can complete a batch of bamboo HI's.

Thanks,

Alan
