Discontinued Hopper io

"A handjob is still a job, okay?"
Crickets here in the hopper thread.

And still that ominous banner on the website;
Currently there are extended lead times for all products. Please only order if you are okay to wait.
I'm waiting 5 months now for some response to my service request.

Not even a 4/20 sale this year? This is not a good look...

Nevertheless, Happy 420 to All!
Can't add any of the Hoppers to the cart or it errors, even on the newer Hopper webpage. VGoodiez removed them from his site recently. Seems like they're done for.

The Hopper io homepage https://hopperio.com/ is currently displaying a banner that says:
Take 40% off Batteries for the next 7 Days! Code:420

Maybe that’s all they have left......
Maybe it’s a fire sale? Oh wait, that was a couple of years ago 😂.

It’s a good deal though. I don’t need them but a few extra would be good to have. My 6+ year experience with HL and an OG and IO is that the HL batteries don’t have a great shelf life. If they sit too long unused they lose their capacity quickly. Just casual observations with several different batches purchased over the years and nothing scientific. That’s been my experience. That and getting a dud within each group I’ve purchased. :peace:

My 20 month old io is still amazing.

I've become addicted to temp stepping a blend of choice terpenes, starting with a low temp nearly pure "terp" hit (110°C) and ending high at 230°C.

I might as well go back to rolling joints when the io fails.

A decent lithium battery should have a shelf life of 10 years. I have a bunch at storage voltage in my refrigerator, so I won’t be testing anytime soon. As I don’t like taking the back end off all the time, I’m NOT rotating my batteries in the IO as I normally do with other battery devices. I’m just continuing to recharge the same battery in the IO. As the IO team made a decision early on to have their odd size batteries custom made, its certainly possible the materials used, as not as robust as commercially made batteries. When I received my new extra batteries from HL, I logged all the battery specs, on a analyzer charger, so eventually I’ll know if they hold up after longer term storage. The DC and AC resistance is the key.... but you need the right measurement tools. Batteries smaller then 18650’s are always worse overall performers, just look at the 18350’s used in the tiny Davinci Micro.

Need to change that handle to "RustyOldSmartNail"!

If I were smart, I would have figured out why none of my (3) HL IO chargers, won’t charge either of my (2) titanium IO’s, in the listed charge times, of under an hour. I documented this in this thread. Tested with a ton of various USB wall chargers, I’m very aware of the specifications of these chargers, but 4-5 hours to charge a depleted battery is STUPID, so I vape, and return to charger immediately. Not the best way to treat a battery, and not a great mobile situation. That’s the other reason, I don’t externally charge. I wish HL had a real CS department and PHONE number to call and figure it out, but ........

I posted this in another thread but it's relevant here as well. A local shop sold me this excellent sativa for $41/oz during their 420 sale.

Turns out it's excellent greenhouse weed. Before this I thought I needed the more expensive indoor weed for good results in the io.

Not anymore. This stuff has an amazing full-sun-grown flavor. It's super sweet when you smell it and the sweetness comes through the io when you vape it.

I have grown indoors, and I was biased. Although it cuts the cost by at least 50%, I assumed the high heat of a greenhouse would ruin the weed. Now I'm thinking the direct sunlight adds flavor that (at least) offsets any losses due to heat. Genetics (choosing the right seeds) and handling (harvesting, curing & storing) apparently are much more important than temperature, and they don't cost anything.

Anyway, less expensive greenhouse weed works great in my io. I probably won't be paying top shelf prices in the future. Now I'm thinking about how much fun (and cost effective) it would be to have a greenhouse with 3-4 strains each summer, including some huge slow-growing sativas. :spliff:

Edit: I've been looking at YouTube videos on the subject. Looks like a lot of growers are going with greenhouse or outdoor these days. I think Oklahoma is growing enough for the nation so be on the lookout. Substituting this in place of $250/oz weed would allow some crook to bypass regulations, avoid taxes and pocket a wad of unearned cash.

I mostly charge all my vape batteries externally. I however do charge my Hoppers in my car with the first gen mag charger when I’m on the go and need to top off the battery. I’ve heard storing batteries in refrigerators tends to work well and prolong the cell’s life. Mine are stored in a cool dry place but not in a fridge. I tend to charge mine up, externally, right after they’re depleted and not sure if it matters if they stay depleted for a longer period between recharges. That I’d be interested in knowing. Other than a few external multi-bay chargers I don’t have any other voltage type of equipment. My Hopper batts don’t last more than 2-3 years after rotating them and, as above, typically recharging them soon after they’re run down. Of course, I have other vapes in rotation so my Hoppers - and now primarily the IO - aren’t heavily used like my OG was back in the day when I had fewer vapes.

Suffice it to say both my OG (circa ‘16 after one yearlong RMA) and my IO (‘20) both still run very well. As long as I have good batteries - or as long as HL stays afloat to procure more batteries… :peace:

P.S. And NO, the fleeting and fledging charging sled won’t cut it for me negating portability.

EDIT: indeed the 18350’s are underwhelming, like my Miqro. But that’s another story.

If so, you would be ( and likely already are) missing out on a world of vaporization that has moved beyond the Grasshopper. Change is good! Someday you may embrace it.

Dude, all I can do is quote the refrain from the title song of the show by the same name,
"You're doing fine, Oklahoma.
Oklahoma, okay!"
(it's impressive that 1 in 10 Oklahomans has a medical cannabis card! Go, you Oakies!)

It is an unfortunate development, all the out of state peeps and foreigners who have swooped in to cash in on the Cannabis Rush. On one hand we have all but stopped the flow over the borders (go USA?) but on the other It dilutes the local economy. I think ditto in Oregon, and to some different degree in other states..

We absolutely need to lift the federal prohibition and allow interstate trade of cannabis.

In my college days (early 1970's) I was 'dealing' pot, would buy a lb. and sell ounces of what we would today call Mexican (or sometimes Jamaican) dirt weed. I started a price war on campus when I reduced from $15 to $13/oz. I just googled the inflationary difference. "$13 in 1972 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $88.24 today"

People who might lament the wild west that the markets have become fail to understand that this is the pendulum swinging back to - and past - normal. It would not be this way if had there not been cannabis prohibition or a War on Drugs.

Edit/Add;
@msl , I saw your,
"The Hopper io homepage https://hopperio.com/ is currently displaying a banner that says:
Take 40% off Batteries for the next 7 Days! Code:420"

I couldn't find and then I realized that this is the site #3 they opened and I never go to that one, now I see the 420 code, thank you. Not sure I'll buy any batteries, but...
I recalled them saying that we'd need a new account to log in to this "latest" "sister" site and I threw up my hands.
Meanwhile, on the original Grasshopper site, one can add an OG Grasshopper to a cart, select shipping, etc. and come within one click of ordering! I stopped for obvious reasons!

The main ? for me is, how long will my io last? That 9.9 year old battery all shiny and new from the fridge will not have any device to help realize its full "potential" (pun intended!).
I really envy the folks who have had trouble free-hopping for years on end, but of the 7 hoppers/io's I've purchased, not one has gone trouble-free for more than about a year.

I believe that without the special size battery as a cash cow for these years, HL would not have lasted as long as they have did.

Hopper io x Simrell MVS Shorty

Hello, I don’t post much on this site but I wanted to share this with all the Hopper fans out there. Couldn’t figure out how to just post the pictures, but the link will send you to pictures of a modified set up I created that allows one to use the Hopper natively with amazing results, I’m talking you can rip it as hard as your lungs can handle!!

It’s definitely an expensive “mouthpiece” but as like many of you, I’m sure, I have always found the Hopper to be overly hot to the point of impossible to hit natively no matter what I tried. I also love to use Dynavaps, particularly Simrell stems, and Austyn has what is an attachment to make the Simrell a mouthpiece for the Mighty, and I found that if you put the right size o-ring at the base of the mighty attachment, it allows it to fit snugly with the PFE cap as shown in the pictures.

Obviously it’s biggest con is how long it becomes, but when using it, it’s not that bad because you just attach it and then take it off to store immediate after.

Worth a try if you happen to have both or have been dreaming of the full convection goodness straight to your lips. The first few hits while using this set up are some of the tastiest, terpiest hits I’ve ever had, not that I’ve used many vaporizers.

Cheers.

I snagged an OG Ti off entexchange today + PFE + glass mouthpiece + 4x new batteries + never used USB charger + new silicon mouthpieces, and it's original box.

Also picked up two three packs of batteries from the Hopper site w/the 40% off but i'm not really holding my breath on those batteries ever showing up; figured I'd give that a few weeks then just start the chargeback process.

Always wanted to try the hopper, even with all the issues around it; but never picked one up because I didn't want to take the risk paying for a new one and having it be a lemon. The concept and potential were great, and it sounds like the ones that work well still are dope ass vapes. So I figured I should get on that before there were no working ones or batteries left to pickup lol. Sounds like the one I got is in great condition at the moment at least and the owner took really good care of it, so I'm excited to try it. Should be here in a few days.

Even if/when it dies, I think it's a cool one to add to the shelf of vapes.

Congratulations! Hope it works and hope you got an extremely good deal. The OG isn't as strong as the io, but I remember mine fondly.

Be aware that the fine screens are prone to plugging in as little as a week or two. It's relatively easy to keep clean with q-tips and alcohol, just ask and you'll get good tips. Air should flow freely but just a little resin begins to restrict, then it can seem frustrating if not fully corrected.

I prefer a fine, dry-ish grind. Always fill but don't pack or stir the chamber. Start low to experience terp flavor (if your weed has enough) then step up and finish on max temp.

Try a slightly less dry version with a medium grind, since it’s a convection device, you will get better airflow with the medium grind, this and less dry herb, will help keep the internals cleaner, longer.

Yeah, I’ve seen that before, a bit too long for me. I’m using the 510 add on shown at the link below, as it doesn’t add too much length and cools great. I have a standard size Simrell Ti stem I use on my Mighty with the adapter.

I admit, I'm seeing quick resin buildup inside the chamber and on top of the MP screen. Have stepped up cleaning procedures and frequency (~10 minutes each 3 days). However, since I've started cleaning both sides of the MP screen, the airflow (and hit quality) has been excellent. My grind isn't really dry. I keep the "working stash" in a tupperware container so it can be broken down and clumpless when it goes in. Could be wrong but I think I get more good stuff that way. It's just dry enough to be ground enough so no green clumps survive the blast furnace.

I ordered a three-pack on the 23rd and received word they shipped today.

Adobewan,
I ordered a 3 pack of batteries, among other things a couple of months ago. I understand there are stock issues accross the accessories range, however cannot even get any response from support.

I would happily pay a seperate shipping charge, to get my batteries faster; but this is not possible without communication!

The fact that I cannot get a response from support, when they were reasonably responsive at the tail end of last year along with the other details provided by members leaves me sceptical of Hoppers future.

Maybe them having stock of and shipping batteries is a sign of a turn around and they are working their way through the backlog, eventually reaching my order?

Can only hope!

hope? You paid for your stuff my friend. i still do not get how they are still allowed in business, i do not think this would have ever been possible in EU, it has been years and these clowns are still there shipping batteries. But they can get away with ripping people off, well, respect Hopper Labs, what else can I say?

I sent an email to support asking if a replacement charger is available. No response thus far.

My old charging ring must have a short or something. It works if you hold the cord next to the USB plug a certain way, as if some internal connection is losing contact.

It's not urgent but I'd be interested if anyone has an unused charger they could part with.

Durban-Poison.jpg

On a side note, pulled out my last package of durban poison, a pure sativa from South Africa. It has a classic sativa flavor that I can't get enough of. Tested it repeatedly, to be sure it's good. It is.

Was only getting about 8 hits per load, might have to take smaller temp steps. This stuff gives a vape hit almost as strong as a bong hit. The buds are heavier than they look and seem to be partially solidified. Crunchy from dried resin on the outside, moist on the inside. Takes a little extra time to prepare a load.
