In the last 24 hours we've seen a huge explosive volcanic eruption from the Tongan island of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai - the blast is so large it's easily visible from multiple satellites in geostationary orbit, tens of thousands of miles up. The blast sent a soundwave around the world which is still being measured and the resulting tsunami caused flooding around the pacific ocean.
Exactly how it happened :

When Capitol Hill staffers were busy trying to clean up on Jan. 7, 2001, people in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office suddenly started answering an unusual set of phone calls. Some who had taken part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot started calling Pelosi’s office to find out where they could recover any items they had left behind.

People who had stormed the Capitol, called “asking whether there was a lost and found because they forgot their phone there, or they left their purse or what have you,” Rep. Jamie Raskin told Insider. The staffers passed on the calls to law enforcement. “The officers quickly got on the phone and said, yeah, just give us your name, your address, your social, you know, and we’ll tie up those loose ends,” the Democratic lawmaker from Maryland said.

Raskin, who is on the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot, said the episode illustrates how so many of the people who stormed the Capitol truly felt they had done nothing wrong. “What’s so fascinating to me about that there really were people who felt as if they had been summoned to Washington by the president,” Raskin said. The phone calls looking for lost items illustrate one of the main challenges the committee investigating the riot is facing. “When they were told that they were trespassing and invading the Capitol, they said the president invited them to be there,” he said. “They didn’t have any kind of subtle understanding of the separation of powers. They just thought that the number one person in the US government had invited them to be there, and therefore they had a right.”

What a way to learn that you shouldn't worship politcians and idiots.

Snow, snow, and more snow. As a kid, seeing a foot or two of snow on the ground was normal. In the past 40 years, I cannot remember seeing 2-3 feet of snow on the ground, until this year. Edmonton was covered in over a foot of snow over the holidays. Now Eastern Canada has its turn.

Updated 1223h MST. Now they are predicting two feet of snow.

So it looks like this is only a problem with the Boeing 777. What was Boeing's plan here exactly? I've been hearing "5g is coming" for years. Surely Boeing execs have too.

Meh...they'll get it figured out.

Probably after Boeing cries and demands a 12 figure bailout to fix their fleet. All because their executives forgot to set a Google news alert for "5g". But remember, they're all business geniuses who work very hard and deserve their multimillion dollar salaries.

Well, well, well. Looks like I was 100% right. The CIA is finally admitting that the whole "Havana Syndrome", Russian space laser thing is complete bullshit.

In a new intelligence assessment, the CIA has ruled out that the mysterious symptoms known as Havana Syndrome are the result of a sustained global campaign by a hostile power aimed at hundreds of U.S. diplomats and spies, six people briefed on the matter told NBC News.

In about two dozen cases, the agency cannot rule out foreign involvement, including many of the cases that originated at the U.S. Embassy in Havana beginning in 2016. Another group of cases is considered unresolved. But in hundreds of other cases of possible symptoms, the agency has found plausible alternative explanations, the sources said.

Yep. CIA Agents had tummy aches because they're alcoholics. Not because Third World countries shot them with Star Wars weapons.

Edit: Holy shit, I forgot Congress unanimously voted to give these CIA crybaby fakers lifetime free healthcare. Amazing.

According to chief executives of the top taxpayer-funded weapons firms, their balance sheets will benefit from the U.S. engaging in great power competition with Russia and China, the recent escalations in the Yemen war, and the potential for a Russian invasion of Ukraine. But at least one CEO didn’t want to give the impression that weapons firms are simply merchants of death, claiming that her firm, the third largest weapons producer in the world, “actually promote human rights proliferation.”

I was told that sending $2000 $1400 checks to regular Americans caused inflation. If that's true, we sure can't afford yet another totally optional war that accomplishes nothing other than enriching the major shareholders of like 5 defense contractors.

I remember when tobacco companies got politicians to shut down all vape mail in this country, all to protect their bottom line. Do you really think defense contractor executives aren't up to the same kind of shit? Perverse incentives, all the way down.

"It was a shock to us that they were openly advertising," Judd said. "Can you believe that? They were openly advertising that they were selling dope on a dating app."

Detectives were able to purchase approximately 280 grams of methamphetamine with a street value of about $14,000 and approximately 3 grams of cocaine, the release said. The operation also netted about 645 grams of marijuana, 113 grams (130 pills) of Ecstasy, 1.5 grams of Fentanyl/heroin, 28 grams of psychedelic mushrooms and one gram of LSD, the PCSO said.

Might have been a better "business plan" to have set up moving "ghost kitchens" and let Uber Eats deliver!

I agree with Neil, the sound from Sportify SUCKS!

When everyone I knew thought CD's sounded great I had vinyl and a Linn turntable. When mp3's were popular I ripped my CD's to WAV files and put them HD's, almost 20 years ago!

Still listen to them via a USB DAC, and I own that music, no monthly subscription fees.

Gruesome details about how orcas hunt the world’s largest animal, the blue whale — like swimming inside their mouths to eat their tongues before they die — have been revealed in a recently published paper. Orcas are known for their ability to hunt in pods, or groups, and work together to kill prey. There have been prior reports of orcas, also called killer whales, chasing blue whales; however, none of the attacks have been verified until now.

“This paper is the first to really confirm a blue whale kill and at the same time it provides firm confirmation that killer whales will even go after mature healthy blue whales,” Erich Hoyt, a research fellow at Whale and Dolphin Conservation, told The Guardian.

The findings of the paper are also crucial in understanding orca dynamics. It was previously thought that in order to take down a blue whale, male orcas had to actively participate. The recent attacks demonstrate that female-led efforts could be successful. And it was presumed to be a female orca, involved in all of the attacks, who first feasted on the whale’s tongue.

Three attacks since 2019 were recorded off the coast of Australia, in Bremer Bay, and were outlined in a report in Marine Mammal Science. The attacks were observed from commercial whale-watching vessels. About a dozen orcas were witnessed attacking a blue whale, estimated to be 18 to 22 metres long, on the morning of March 21, 2019. Chunks of blubber and skin, as well as most of its dorsal fin, had been bitten off, leaving “underlying bone exposed.”

After about 20 minutes, observers noticed the whale slowed and started swimming in circles. It was “bleeding profusely” and growing weaker. The orcas teamed up to ram its flank and force it underwater. “While it was still alive,” the paper explained, “an adult female killer whale put its head inside the blue whale’s mouth and began feeding on its tongue.” When the whale finally started to sink, a sign of its death, a total of around 50 orcas joined to feed on the fresh kill.

After Joni Mitchell and, apparently Nickelback, have announced they're joining old Neil - Spotify opened today up 10% - a nice change for Spotify who is down 21% YTD.

LOL. We all know Nickelback does not carry any weight!

i saw a joke that went something like “Nickelback is threatening To release a new album unless Rogan is cancelled.”

As far as Spotify “losing” 2 billion dollars, I’ll just file that in my “further evidence the stock market is nothing more than a mood ring for rich people” folder.

I thought the same on Nickelback. Honestly assumed they were trying to get some free publicity

Saw this joke on Young (pretty accurate tho)

People under 30 are asking: 'Who's Neal Young?'
People over 30 are asking: 'Neal's still alive?'
People over 60 are asking: 'What's Spotify?'

Nothin on Joni Mitchell, but I'm in the "who is she" category. Just looked up some of her songs and I dont recognize any of them based on the name alone. Maybe I'd recognize a popular tune if it were played

I’m in my late 30’s. I’ve definitely heard of Joni Mitchell and Neal Young. I’d be hard pressed to name any of their songs though. I also hate Spotify because their UI sucks.

Never really got the Nickelback hate. They kinda suck but not any more than most popular music.
