Mod box/510 options?

Hey all,

I think the most likely fall out of whatever the PACT act brings will be these vapes, so I'm thinking about jumping on one quick. I was never an ecig user, so I don't know much about mod boxes at all. I had a few questions I was hoping you could help me sort:

- best vape option? I've been looking at the Mistvape options (probably the impocognito, but I e-mailed them and they mentioned they might have a few imps if there is any significant performance difference--I would think the heater being closer would arguably be a pro for the impcognito, but no real idea). If something else is worth considering/superior I'm open to suggestions
- the obvious question, best mod box? From Mistvape's site, I'd like to get something compatible with Arctic Fox or Tubo firmware
- hopefully an easy question: I'm quite tech savvy, but I don't have a windows computer atm. Can firmware be updated/flashed on linux or macOS, or is that going to be a hard blocker?

I'm not sure now because they may not be available anymore many places, Wismec Sinuous P80 is a good option for the Imps though... And yes you're going to need to find a Windows computer or virtual software, to flash the mod and load custom firmware.

Yeah I’m plenty comfortable installing Windows in a vm. Actually I bet if I hang around the forums where Arctic Fox is built someone can tell me if it’s feasible to do in a nix env.

It is a drag trying to look at mods though. Definitely seems like most businesses are already trying to sell through their inventory.

Yeah its a tough time now especially, plus discontinued, might be worth posting here and reddit, you may find someone who has one already loaded with the firmware in fact!

I have a DC Gen2 from Divine Tribe and while I know it's not as fancy as the Imp or Stempod, I really really love it. It appears from what I've read that it's very much a love it/hate it thing. People either have good luck with settings and find it to produce satisfying flavor, or they feel like it produces nothing or combusts quickly...there's basically no in-between in terms of opinion on it.

Good news is it's only like $37 for the atomizer, so if you have a mod and want to give it a shot, it's not an expensive flyer. I'm really loving mine as a nice on-demand sipping option-I can take a few hits, put it down, come back later, take some more hits, or I can puff away on it until I kill a bowl in 5 minutes.

@QF1994 unfortunately I do not have a mod, which is why I was asking for recommendations. I would have been tempted to pick up one of their gets to get one (my brief research suggests the eleaf pico is a decent unit) and a vaporizer to compare it to, but they seem to be sold out 🙁

Thanks @GoldenBud. One of the few I’m still finding in stock—bumming me out that the color options I’d ideally choose are gone.

Of the three mentioned is there any notable difference in quality of the device or vape, or is it pretty close?

Idle curiosity, in my head I always figured that at some point I’d buy a super premium portable for discretion around town. My dynavap is fantastic if I’m hiking or on a long bicycle ride or what have you, but it’s hard to walk the dog and manage a torch. In my head the super premium was either the firewood 7 or the tinymight*. How would, say, an imp + mod compare? I’m worried I’m doing this for the wrong reasons (fomo) and just wasting money that could go towards one of those, or an equally good portable.

*Those still seem like some of the best true portables, but I have to say I’m turned off by the build quality of them both. When I got into vaping a couple of months ago someone on Reddit suggested the Firewood to me. At the time it wasn’t popular and was readily available, and the pictures I saw made it clear it was built by a crafts person. Lately (post Sunday night drops that sell out in minutes) every picture I see on Reddit seems pretty clear to me that the fit and finish have been compromised to get them out the door—gauges on the wood and wide gaps at the joints that aren’t present in older pictures. Tm also has a stellar reputation, but seeing all the friction fit pieces on the board and weird hacks that users share to keep a $250 vape working isn’t something I get super enthusiastic about. To me if I’m dropping that much it should just work, and for a long time, but obviously that’s just my opinion.

Imp is pretty great indeed, but honestly I never use mine really, as a portable it is pretty nice my setup at least and did serve me well in some situations that I haven't been in in a long time lol TM and FW7 superior for me personally... No reason to buy anything if you are trepidatious though, and there's always risk with handmade!

Yeah, for sure. The imp looks mighty nice, but I do think part of it is just the vape ban. I’ll have to think it over—I’m pretty well set with what I’ve got, but having an electric portable would have its uses. The ban is also concerning because I have no idea if I’ll be able to easily acquire mods down the road if I get one and it dies in a year or two.

What makes you prefer the TM or FW over the imp? Is just preference or do they more evenly/efficiently extract or just taste better?

I’m guessing no one knows since it’s so damn hard to get, but based on aesthetics I think the P80 would be my portable end game—any idea how it compares?

So there really shouldn't be a reason to acquire another mod, I mean suppose you could get an defective one and try to warranty, but that's not too common depending on the mod (RXgen3Dual is one that I've actually seen that happen to but it's still not super common, dropped one of my G3D and it's still working fine) Dave of Mist is a good dude so I do recommend supporting him, and if you have this gap in your collection, then it doesn't sound too excessive or driven necessarily by the ban itself, that's just what's motivating you to finally fill the hole! One setup, it really is impressive and useful, I could certainly be satisfied by it without issue...

What makes you prefer the TM or FW over the imp? Is just preference or do they more evenly/efficiently extract or just taste better?

For one thing they have larger bowl sizes, though you can load more into the imp I find you have to stir which I do not like, I mean same thing would happen if you load more in the TM, but I can load a noster size in the TM that is larger than the one in the Imp because the stems are larger (uses my RBT rimless basket screens) but also for me the o-ring is a little bit easier to work with in the TM, I think mist changed his o-ring design since the one I have though and I think they are a bit easier to work with now... Both very secure for glass stem vapes!

But anyway I am also mostly using at home especially now, so it's not as enjoyable to use the imp, like it's great for me if I need to take it in a movie theater, but the TM and FW7 I am using through j hooks and just a different experience... I like that they are all in one, time control everything already built in, a bit more analog than the digital feel of the imp... TM has a much larger heater so much more wattage more power, and FW7 is conduction hybrid so it completely different signature and very very capable!

They all taste great, they all extract well, and efficiently, so yeah it's a preference thing I guess comparing all of them hit for hit and style of use for me...

I’m guessing no one knows since it’s so damn hard to get, but based on aesthetics I think the P80 would be my portable end game—any idea how it compares?

I actually have the original tubo, then I got the dual when he created the tetra heater, soon after he released the TP80 and I was lucky enough to get one in the first drop. They are great as well, love how it is already configured with the mod for temp control and additional features, in the side by side form factor, heater is also unique and very capable, plus so many stem options and other accessories along with various woods!

However the TM and FW7 are still what I reach for the most, but you really can't go wrong with any of these, Tetra is definitely more capable than the Imp though with the larger heater and bowl sizes...

Thanks for the input! I didn’t even consider that I couldn’t necessarily use the mist vape through water, but that’s not necessarily a deal breaker to me as my Woodscents has been killing it through water!

I mean with a Delta 3D universal adapter (or even whip tubing) most anything can be used through water, but yeah I like to go drive through dry j hooks and mostly just use water with vapbong or for dabs these days...

Something I should add—I’ve seen some beautiful pictures of Heat Island logs in the thread here and on Reddit. I know he has the iHeat as well, though there’d be a wait list. How do you find it compares to the imp et al @Shit Snacks ? I like that he has the option for a glass sleeve inside of the heater. I’m not sure how strictly necessary it is, but I always worry that eventually the condensation/resin build up on wood will kill the flavor. So far that hasn’t been my experience with the wooden wpa that came with the WS—it just smells wonderful—but it’s always a concern for longevity.

Oh yeah, check out the iHeat thread, sometimes he has stuff ready made available now if you email him, good to get on the list regardless though! I actually don't know anyone that opted for the glass inside of theirs, I guess because the splinter used to be readily available if you wanted that option, but what he does do is use stainless steel foil to protect the wood actually...

Yeah I think the only concern if I end up on his list is I’ll become the owner of a second log 😂. I'm not sure that this is necessarily a bad thing, but I feel like diversity of experiences might be cooler than the more subtle differences between the various logs. Might shoot him a message though--thanks!

I have one of his small steel core logs and one of his small glass core, after having underdog previously, I can confirm there are definitely differences between them that are less subtle than you might think once you actually experience it! Also his wait list is about 2 years long right now I think for a new addition, so why not get on the list (by email btw) then just decide later when the time finally comes and you forgot about it! He may have different options by then, like now he also has larger size logs and new heater core designs, always so many different stems too... Just sayin :brow: :freak:
