I've always been led to believe that the SSV and the DaBuddha use the exact same heating element? Meaning that the difference is mainly in appearance and the fact that the DB has a gong whip? Is this correct or is the silver surfer actually a harder hitter?

Yeah they are useful, I've seen festivals recommending them for putting your cigarette ends in them (keep the place tidy) because apparently they are somewhat smell-proof (I've not tested the theory). Still if that's true it makes for great bud storage.
