The Vaposhop picture of the fitted mouthpiece shows that it is fitted incorrectly, the gasket should be placed inside the CU. I think some of the problems you faced would be from trying to force the gasget and mouthpiece into the top of the CU.

A simple and easy solution would be to try using the inside of a bic ballpoint pen (other brands available), just push that down the vapor path (mouthpiece end) ejecting the oven screen. I'd advise that you don't push the plastic pen insert through whilst the oven is hot!
