Puffco Proxy

Yeah… “power where you need it”…. EXCEPT on the bottom. More like 2D.
Maybe it’s great, too steep for my wallet.

Price is too steep for sure. But maybe they're on to something with the side only heating. It should indirectly heat the bottom too, like an e-nail coil. I only say this because most people who try it mention how smooth the vapor is, especially for a dry dab. How the heater is configured might contribute to that.

If I didn't have like a decade's worth of wax pen knowledge built up, I'd probably pick up a Proxy. I like sitting back with a little device and taking little dry low temp dabs. Unfortunately, I'm certain I've put together a superior dry electric hash pipe with parts I have around the house:

I'll still try to give the Proxy a whirl at some point, but I'd be shocked if I like it better than this. For one, my hash pipe uses black SiC instead of white ceramic. And it's true what they say. Once you go black (ceramic), you never go back. The DTv5 tastes great. The M22's SiC just tastes better and smoother. Can't imagine it'd be different with the Proxy's white ceramic.

I can swap batteries instead of waiting for a charge. It gets to temp in 4 seconds instead of 30. And while I'm using wattage curves instead of temp control, I bet I still have more temperature customization. Several reviews have mentioned the Proxy requiring reheats and leaving a puddle. Never a problem with my little guy. You can take the equivalent of a hot, cold start torch dab, and the sapphire cooling balls will still make it pretty comfortable. No water needed.

Total cost of my hash pipe is about $130 new. Unless you already have an old Pico laying around. It requires a little knowledge to get it going and keep it maintained, but the ongoing cost of ownership is low. Replacement Proxy atty's are $60 a pop. And once the battery goes... you'll need a new $300 device instead of a new 18650.

I'd also rather look like an e-cig douche in public than whipping out a device that is definitely for drugs. The time's they are a changing, but old habits die hard and I'd rather not encourage second glances from law enforcement.

Seeing on Reddit that some people are complaining about the pipe being painted glass.

My other concern would be battery life, especially as the battery declines over time. Unless I've missed that the batteries are swappable...

Yes. Apparently the outside of the glass is painted. This was only discovered after someone put the glass in a hot kiln. I think this sounds worse than it is. The paint is nowhere near the mouthpiece. I stained the outside of my TinyMight. Not sure this is much different.

The batteries are not swappable. So eventually this $300 device will just die. If this thing sells well there may be third party battery replacement services.

If it is like the Puffco Peak Pro the battery swap is possible...not really easy though.
Puffco had the same painted glass problem with the Peak Pro Indiglow,

So no torch cleaning...I hope a clear version will drop soon.

So what's the story on the silicone in this thing? I know it's frowned upon in vapor paths. But at the same time we've had medical users sucking on silicone tubing for years.

I have some credits coming due at a few local dispos at the end of the month. I might try and use those to cop a Proxy for around $200. I figure then I can sell it and break even if it doesn't impress.

But the less than ideal vapor path is concerning. That having been said, people love the Peak Pro. Pretty sure it involves some silicone too if it works the same as the OG.

Does anyone know if the actual bottom of the chamber heats up? Only been playing with ot for a few days but seems like only the sides get hot.

No. Only the sides have a coil in them. Not the bottom. I suppose that's how most e-nails are set up. The Divine Tribe v5 has a similar heater but the coil heats the bottom as well. I don't have a Proxy so I can't compare the two. I will say the v5 get to temp much faster.

It's a pretty interesting design decision.

It's conduction vaporization, you want the floor to heat up more than anything.

The enail coils that don't cover the bottom have been kind of obsolete for a while. The "axial" coil that wraps around the bottom works much better than the barrel coils that only heat the sides.

Interesting. I didn’t know that. Intuitively, it seemed to me that having more heat coverage is better than less.

If you listen to Roger, he says the reason is so your hash is only getting cooked when you inhale. That draws the oil to the sides.

My guess is it would probably be better to have more heater coverage that gets to temp faster. Rather than letting the oil sit for half a minute before inhaling.

Someone on IG asked me about making a Briar Burl Pipe for the Proxy. I think I am intrigued. It would be a very big pipe, but that can work. The first one would be an expensive investment.
In general, I'd like to hear any thoughts on that. Wondering who thinks there is a market for people looking to spend several hundred USD more on a handmade, one-of-a-kind in Briar Burl.

for those of you not familiar with my work, this is a recent pipe I did for another device:

I also do stuff for people who still play with matches...
and I have a thread here where I post new work.

Any thoughts appreciated. Smart ass remarks also accepted.

Based on the volume of sales by Puffco and the DV stem market, in gotta imagine there would be interest. Custom, artisanal but less breakable than glass is a killer combo.

My registration here is already paying off! Saw the High Times review of this, thought it looked incredible, wanted to see what you folks thought of it! Really insightful, thoughtful feedback. I really enjoy the pipe aesthetic, are there any other vapes that have this style?

It's expensive for what it is. But there really isn't another easy to setup, small crucible style "wax pen" with good dry cooling available.

If you're only using it at home, a Peak Pro with the 3D atomizer is probably a better value. But there are good reasons to choose the Proxy too. And most of the reviews have been quite positive. I just think the thing should cost $199-$250 max.

Yes and I wish more people considered replacement costs. Unless you're using a wattage-only M22, then your replacement cost is $160 for a temp-control capable crucible. It's not SiC, but the DTv5 is only $24 for a 3-pack! And it's got continuously adjustable temp control, not just a few presets. So it's been my DD for concentrates. If I didn't worry about wasting product in the ring where the bottom meets the sides, then it would be perfect. The only thing that's made me want a Proxy was a video of a terp perl leaving the Proxy emptied with no wasted product after a couple of hits. But even if the Proxy is saving me $ by not wasting product, it would take a while to break even. And then there's the $60 atty to figure in.

Yeah, I've been pretty much only using my m22 housing with the v5 cup lately. It's the most dummy proof wax atomizer since the TAF Sai. I'd say, it's about 90% as good as m22 SiC, but much less stressful to maintain.

I don't really find the v5 leaves any more reclaim than a low temp dab should. For dry dabs, one big advantage the Proxy has is the heat from the crucible doesn't rise right into the stem. Smart heat management.

I'm travelling a lot right now, and could see the Proxy being an ideal companion. Travelling with a Peak kind've sucks. You need to take the base in your carry on luggage. Smell management in hotel rooms is another factor. With the Proxy, I could take dry dabs outside in the smoking section. And if I have an opening window, I could just pop the thing in the bubbler attachment.

I just hope they make a bluetooth version with 1 degree temp control. I'd miss that coming from the v5/Pico combo.

Two thoughts after watching the commercial. The official pronunciation of rosin should now be "rose-ayne". And that guy needs to marry his lady friend. He comes home to a variety of hash she picked up? Yeah, lock that shit down bro.
