Cold weather, Xmax V3 pro - yes or no? (or other recommendations?)

Hi there,

I need some help choosing my first vape. I’ve looked around here on FC, found some interesting vapes, thinking now about the Xmax V3 pro. Read through the thread there but did not want to post this over there since I also want to hear other suggestions.

Winters where I live get cold and I like to smoke outside, so I will like to continue and vape outside. I read that the V3 seems to be weak in cold weather? Opinions are subjective so I would appreciate if I can gather som advice from different people.

Can a convection vape like the V3 have a harder time in the cold? If so, what might be the lowest temperatures it does alright in?
  1. -20 – -10˚C (-4 - 14˚F)
  2. -10 – 0˚C (-4 – 32˚F)
  3. 0 - 10˚C (32 – 50˚F)
I’m not so fussy and have no problem getting used to quirks, so if there is a way of it working, I am a happy vaper.

In case the V3 doesn’t cut it, any other recommendations? I was looking at the V3 pro for a few reasons:
  • No plastic in air and vapor pathway
  • Option to use capsules, I might like that - can live without it
  • Portable, small
  • Budget friendly - not sure if I want to spend a lot on my first vape
  • Has received positive reviews
  • Replaceable battery
  • Easy to clean?
  • Session and On-demand modes? Sounds nice
And some background info:
I used to smoke very often, or combust if you like, mostly spliffs, sometimes bowls. I have since then had a period, a few years now, where I haven’t smoked much at all. I now feel that it would be nice to sometimes relax but I really don’t feel for smoking anymore. So I have low tolerance but a lot of experience. And I also will probably not up my tolerance much.

No one can really answer this for you yet, it's too early, but it is great, I say yes grab one and then make sure to post in the thread how it works for you in these cold temperatures!! My guess is you may want to use a rubber band or something to restrict the airflow, or just your hands, other than that shouldn't really be an issue...

Bad Dog

Yeah I pissed on the rug...... so what
sorry I can't answer your question :( but I do have a cold weather vaping suggestion????? keep the V3 tucked into your sleeve with just the mouth piece poking out, that way the air it pulls in is the warmer air from inside your coat instead of the colder outside air. I vaped quite a few times outside with my tinymight last winter and it gets a little cold here in Canada lol

True, and I will make sure to report back on how it works. Temps not down so low yet, probably a month or so until it gets really cold. Btw, I hadn’t realised that there were new seasons of Archer until a couple of days ago.. have you seen them? And the whole dream land and coma seasons, what did you think?

Wow, I was actually picturing something like that as I was posting my question so I am happy that works. Thanks!

That is quite a range of temps above...

You should have no trouble finding vapes that perform well in 50*F, but you will be hard pressed to find any batteries that perform well when temps go below freezing.

The issue is not so much going to be the vape, but battery.

Whatever you do, I suggest keeping the device and all batteries under your clothes and as close to your skin as possible. It might help some with battery life/performance...

Haha yeah it never stopped, just shorter seasons and more time between seasons now, yeah the coma seasons got better and better, but still a little off sidetrack you know, when it came back with season 11 it was so good and refreshed though (I also liked the season in LA before the coma) and this season 12 was also very good, excited for season 13 but sad about mother!!

Last year during a polar vortex or something that made it absurdly cold (if I'm remembering correctly it was < -30 degrees F below zero in the sun, stupid cold) I was skiing with some friends, and generally find MN winters to be pretty cold =). I think @FlyingLow nailed it. None of those temps are so low that they are going to be difficult for a good heater to overcome, but your battery life might be abysmal. In the extremely cold temps I mentioned I brought along my dynavap and used a lighter with it. It still worked well, although taking my mittens off to light it was horrible--it would probably be doable with mittens on, but I had my lighter in a pocket next to my body to keep warm so it required taking them off to access anyway.

I didn't have an electronic portable at the time, so I can't comment except to say that my buddy's Utilian something or other and wax cartridge vapes were unusable after we went outside. Neither of those are well regarded options around here, though.

Good to know, thanka for the advice.

No spoilers! Haven't watched season 11 or 12. Yea, I thought those coma seasons were good too, different but that's what I liked about them. Liked that the creators had some fun. But it seems like most people I talk to hated them.

Sounds cold! Yes, I will remember to keep the vape/battery warm, thanks.

So I went ahead and ordered earlier this morning, I might be an owner of a V3pro next week, my first vape.

Maybe you change your mind to going outside while vaping when you get to know it.
Vaping leaves hardly or nothing any odors in the house in contrast to smoking.
It's just vapor and no smoke. You can use a vape carefree in the house in a cozy atmosphere :)
I wish you a great experience :sherlock:

Haha sorry nothing I said was spoilery really, Jessica Walter passed away earlier this year unfortunately... They did a good send off though, sad but sweet. Yeah the creators needed a shake up for themselves, I did not like the dreamland season as much, but the others are a lot of fun! They've still got it...

I like going out for walks, but I maayybe will start vaping more at home like you say. I am really looking forward to no more smoke.
Thank you

Btw I see in your signature that you have had a Tinymight but sold it? Can I ask why? It was one of the vapes I was looking at before the xmax v3

I don't know much the cold will affect the V3.

I've got a Starry v3, and is small, simple and reliable. I've yet to try it in the cold, but I think will be fine.

Welcome to FC. The Tinymight has the more powerful heater and is capable of bigger, denser hits. Don't jump to any conclusions about on demand convection portables if the hits from the V3 are a bit tame.

My V3 arrived last week and I'm very impressed all the same. For a hundred bucks it's something I'll recommend regularly and since you've done yourself the favor of lowering your tolerance it'll have plenty of punch to get you started. Go for long steady hits and give the smaller, slower heater a chance to get going.

The Tinymight and Firewood7 are my go-to pocket portables. The V3 will slot in as something less dear I can use for vaping out. I'm definitely keeping it and not trying to rain on your parade. It's just since you're new I wanted you to know not to sleep on these forum favorite boutique vapes: they really show out when it comes to flavor, vapor quality, and versatility. Also, you can sell them used for the same price as new so there's no risk in treating yourself.

I mostly only use the Tinymight two-handed with a j-hook and I can't say enough good things about the boombastic hits it serves up

Because i dont like the cooling unit from the TM.
And without it it was me too hot but for sure it is a great Vaporizer.

Thanks, happy to be here. I known that I have stumbled by FC years ago but I wasn’t into vapes then.
Don’t worry, criticism is usually healthy, and I will probably still be very satisfied with the V3. But I will keep in mind what you wrote.
I actually did read up a bit on the firewood, tinymight and tetra p80 before going for the V3. They all seem interesting but I want to try something cheaper first (then there is the thing how firewood and tetra p80 are hard to get even if I wanted one..)

I picked up a v3 yesterday. Edmonton's forecast for today is looking ugly, and we will likely get our first snow.

Last winter, our coldest days was around -30 C. When the cold weather comes, I take the V3 outside and give it a try.

Ah so then you're in another country, right? Yeah in the US it's not on Netflix at all, the entire series is available on Hulu, Disney owns Hulu and FX now, so all FX series all seasons including the newest ones (except for a few exceptions) are available for streaming on Hulu here... Yeah so the way it works, Netflix for you will not have season 12 until next year then, they probably only just got season 11 recently... Typically they get the previous season when the new season starts, and the new season 12 only just ended like a month ago now? But yeah super sad that she passed away, she has had such an illustrious career and is always amazing in everything she does!! The show had also lost the voice actors behind Woodhouse and Ron Cadillac previously:(

We had a bit of snow in the morning two days ago. But it didn’t last long.

Yes, in Europe. Wow, I knew that Disney was big and has been just getting bigger but still, wow.. Disney is kinda an interesting subject to read about. Hmm, yes it is usually like that with being one season behind here.. I will have to look up Jessica Walter, not really familiar with her.
I am in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Looked up Edmonton on the map, it is pretty north. No wonder temperatures are cold, btw has there been temp changes with climate change?

Edmonton is on the edge of the prairies and the northern bushland.

On a summer day we can wake up to 3-4 Celsius, and have it hit 35-40. There are more than a few days where I will have the furnace on in the morning and need the air conditioner in the afternoon.

Like our southern neighbour Calgary, we do get chinooks, but not as often as south Alberta.

I've recently spent days using it in 40F degree weather, and found it seriously struggled. I had to do some fancy puffs to "kick start" it, as well as covering intakes. Obviously an extended session will eventually heat the device, but stuff like a quick puff or two is not possible.

Great vape, though, and you should buy one!

Haha yeah Disney worked hard to get bigger before launching Disney+ and taking over Hulu, also now internationally they own Star, so they are launching international D+ and FX stuff for streaming that way! Star+ lol

And omg Jessica Walter was the mother on Arrested Development before Archer, that should be on Netflix as an original series (they acquired the original first three seasons that were on Fox way back when, and they revived it for a fourth and fifth season) but yeah she has an illustrious career, always amazing in everything!

Today I have been outside with both the XMax Starry v3 and the XMax V3 Pro. It is not horribly cold yet, but the Starry v3 is better than the V3 Pro.

I'm not surprised that a conduction vape outperforms a convection vape in the cold. It has several disadvantages, but roasting the herb isn't one of them.

I really like my starry too, and it's a beast, but I use it for different purposes than the v3pro. They each have their pros (lol) and cons.
