Which Fat Absorbs THC Best?

When cooking with cannabis, I've noticed I get different results 'every' time I try to infuse it into a fat. I always thought this was due to the strain of herb used or mistakes during decarb. But an article I read this morning showed me it could be the fats used. I always thought coconut oil was the best carrier, but according to these test results, olive oil is.

Brilliant thread @momofthegoons, iv been wondering about this a lot lately...

I don't like coconut and have been in search of something to infuse into instead.

I know there is butter, but I was drawn to the coconut as it's has medium chain fatty acids, I need to find another fat with similar properties...

I am surprised that the butter performed better, I thought it would be coconut too. ....

My problem is I'm on a health kick since giving up smoking, so I want a healthier option than butter...

The good thing in coconut oil is the medium chain triglycerides..

You can get mct oil....

I wonder if I can infuse into that.?????

Anyone know this.

It adds a bit of a mocha taste to drinks. And once you add 80 grams of herb to a litre of it, well, it's no longer odorless or tasteless... ;)

edit - @momofthegoons great charts, but the amount of difference between the top 3 or 5 carriers is so slight that it's really back to personal preference. My apothecary includes coconut oil, rice bran oil, vegetable glycerine, and a variety of alcohol tinctures, some thicker and some lighter. With these in my toolkit I can do some pretty fun herbal acrobatics :science:

You know it's funny, I was just considering this same thing the other day. I've made a lot of edibles with my ABV. I'm a bit of a flavor chaser so I have very lightly toasted ABV and have made some intense edibles with butter, coconut oil, vegetable oil and canola oil, but no matter what, the cookies I make with butter are the most potent. Brownies seem to be an item that requires no butter, just oil, so I've really tried to make some potent brownies with infused oil. Cookies tend to require butter, so I make cookies with my butter. No matter how hard I try to make the brownies strong, the cookies always end up being much more potent. I always thought that possibly my body chemistry works better with butter for some reason, but this info above is interesting.

Without knowing your recipes is there a possibility that the brownies have more volume than the cookies, thus decreasing the amount of actives per piece?

That makes sense actually, and could be part or all of the reason. But I still don't think the oil absorbs the same way butter does? When I make my butter it comes out green as green can be, even though my ABV is toasted. It's like the oil combines better in the butter- I don't know how to explain it and it could be all in my head. The oil just comes out a brown like the ABV. I was amazed the first time I made butter from my ABV and it came out a bright, lime green.

@Jethro Interesting. I use quite a bit through the day in varying forms, so don't really notice much if one would be that much weaker than another type of infusion. This mornings 3 cups of coffee each had a splash of medicated MCT oil and medicated VG. Plus a few stems on Milaana while watching the hummingbird channel (just filled another feeder, and these guys are busy!)

When you make your budders and oils do you use lecithin? When budder made with lecithin cools in the fridge it makes these crazy patterns on the surface, and is usually a deeper green than making it without.

No actually, I need to try the lecithin for sure, I've seen threads and posts here- maybe of yours- about it. I'll order some up as I'll be getting ready for a big budder run next week.

looks like I can reduce my simmer time according to this :)

4 Hours Ban-Marie instead of the 12 Hours I usually do!

I'll try this next time, though this only seems to measure THC and not CBD bonds?

Lo and Behold! The transformative power of Vapor.
For a brief time I was throwing my freshly cached ABV directly into a small jar of olive oil. Give the jar a shake occasionally.

Figured the Oil would soften any cell walls. And Olive Oil seems very digestible to me already. Just don't eat it with a heavy food or dish.

As long as I kept the oil from going bad. I could use it like some sort of salad oil.

I've been using olive oil for all my abv edibles. add olive oil and sunflower lecithin every time to boost fat content for max absorption. the key component is the lecithin as its lipid fat content works with the cannabinoid lipid very well as a carrier.

Just made a batch of butter with a stick of sweet cream butter, 1/4 cup coconut oil, and 1/2 oz abv, rosin chips, & stems. Gonna whip up a batch of cookies tonight or tomorrow. Curious to see how it works out. I've made edibles before, but never with abv. The butter has an almost coffee like smell to it, which seems odd but is pleasant. The abv is from my ascent & crafty which I max out at 380F. Hopefully it'll be pretty potent

My spousal unit found a bottle of EVOO called 'finishing oil', for dips and dressings. It's deliciously light and tasty and makes fire a nice child extraction :)
