I still haven't got my first vape yet, but one of the main reasons I'm looking at vaping is the possible health benefits.

Although I havent been a heavy smoker for sometime, on the rare occasions that I do have a combustion session, there is a noticeable effect on my lungs for weeks afterwards, when I go for a run.

I want to know exactly how far vaporizing can go to minimize this. So I was wondering if people could post the following:

    A) How much do you vape/smoke?

    B) What condition do you feel your lungs are in?

Perhaps its not the most scientific of studies, but I think it will be interesting nonetheless.

i have been smoking on and off for 25+ years with breks. i was competitive in amature boxing for some time and didnt smoke when i was, needless too say my lungs were in great shape for that.. have to be or your gonna get punched out.
i was never a real cig smoker but i have smoked cigs in my life. i switched to vaping because i was thinking of the health benifits.
honestly after experimenting for a year now im not so sure it is healthier, just going by how it has made me feel. and i dont buy all the transition period stuff fully either.
seems that vaping makes my lungs, or maybe not my lungs, but bronchial tree very sencitive im finding that things that didnt bother me before like dust and smells desieal exhust ect really bother me now.
anyway i have had my lungs checked out, a couple xrays saying early signs of copd {which was never noticed or mentioned on a xray a year before i started vaping i mite add} and a lung function test that says im in good shape my lung age is 35 im 42 in 2 months. so thats not bad.
i think that if i only vape once in a while and just small amounts it would not be as bad. but if i go over board and vape a lot, it too ME anyways is pretty much just as bad as smoking could even be worse. this being a vapor forum though with lots of x smokers swering by there change i may be a minority hear, but i think for my self and for me im just not so sure.

Thanks for that Chris, very interesting. According to wikipedia, studies seem to show there is a decreased risk of developing lung problems if you vape instead of smoke MJ. Though of course, we don't know what kind of vapes they used.

I read this study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1853086/ with particular interest, with 100 of 152 vaporizer users (65.8%) reporting no respiratory problems, compared to 3767 of 6731 (56.0%) of smokers. This obviously suggests there is a difference but not a massive one, though thweir sample size is small and there is a lack of information in general in that paper.

Can I ask do you use any kind of water/ice cooling on your vape smoke. I've read that the irritation of the hot vapor can cause problems, and that cooling it in some way can make a difference.

    A) A lot, usually :mental:

    B) Great! I live a very active lifestyle, and vaporizing doesn't seem to interfere with that at all like smoking did.

hey yelooo, i have read all kinds of info on vaporizing, tons right here on fc. and idividual accounts of others expereinces with vapor.
i started with a mflb and at first i was totatly taking with it, loved it, and it did seem less irritating to me then smoking, but after a while i noticed it was making me cough a lot. i started a thread here looking for answers like you, it was pretty helpfull.
thought it was maybe this transition thing that seems to happen with new vaporists. i tried different things. started using water tools and again at first it seemed too work, but after a while the same sort of irratation thing was happening. i got another vape a solo it is awesome. i tried the hot water thing maybe it kinda works. there are also lots of other things that need to be to figured out about vaporizng to really know if it is better then smoking. there is even a thread about ammonia levels being higher in vaping then smoking. somewhere here on the forum.
and there could be other factors that we just dont know yet. who knows there could still be some little neadle in the haystack so to speak.
alls i know is that after a year experimenting i question as to weather i feel better or not. seems i always have this irratation in my throat that i really cant remember being there when i smoked and this sencitivity to soo many things in the air. i have thought of everything i can even to the point that it could be psyhcosimatic or maybe time to just give it up

    B. Great. I used to notice an effect before switching and for a while until things cleared out after switching (lots of phlegm). Now I can breathe great! I noticed a big improvement switching to water cooled vapor though ... I found I had some throat irritation with non-water cooled vapor (I love you Cloud :))

I am a moderate to severe asthmatic...so any kind of combustion is out of the question. I started vaping cannabis about 3 years ago for severe insomnia (I use it also for deep relaxation. I am on a variety of bronchodilators and frequent prednisone...all stimulants). My lungs were already crappy when I started vaping (I hadn't smoked or used cannabis for a number of years when I started. And I NEVER was a tobacco smoker...was just infrequent cannabis smoker). Well, my lungs are just as crappy as when I started vaping (no surprise there) but they are not any worse for vaping. And, when I am doing poorly, at least the cannabis improves my overall feeling! I use a MFLB with a whip attachment and also edibles.
I use about one MFLB trench a day, sometimes 1 and a half. Maybe 5 grams a month vaped.

I have mild asthma that is triggered by the weather. Right now I'm going through that "trigger", and I am coughing a lot.

A: I vape once to twice a week, and only about 3 - 4 draws out of my Solo each time.
B: I feel like I have a really tight chest the next day, and I feel like my lungs are congested with mucus (especially in the morning when I wake up). I cough a little as well (both on the day and the day after). I definitely need to be drinking lots of water when I vape, and after as well. I have a tickly throat for the next day or so. I feel like my lung capacity is reduced and I'm unable to take deep breaths.

I'm always feeling conflicted about compromising my health this way. Anyway, I keep it to a minimum as much as I can. I'm thinking of getting a full respiratory system check-up as well just to make sure all is well... thanks for starting this thread. It's a good reminder for me to not get carried away with my new toy (Solo)!!

68 years old. Vape every single night. Drag this 210 lb. body around the track running 20 miles a week. For my age, my lungs are in pretty darn good shape. My knees are startin' to feel it though.

Used to smoke 3 pack of cigs a day along with a joint every night along with a variety of other drugs, but that was a loooong time ago. Did that for decades. It's amazing how the human body can heal itself over time. Doc says my lungs look like I've never smoked..........ever.

When I started smoking I was 14 and now im 23 and i think its safe to say ive smoked nearly every single day since. My lungs used to be horrible as for when i was younger, since i was on the heavy side growing up I was 268 lbs... when I turned 18 I lost 115lbs and now im 158 and have maintained a steady weight since. Ive run at least 1 Mile (some days much longer) nearly everyday since i lost weight Along with smoking and my lungs still have healed immensely along with the rest of my body. Smoking doesnt affect me running or exercising at all but i can definately say this was the exact opposite when i didnt take care of my body :\ even though it doesnt affect my workout or breathing patterns im sure my lungs could look much better... :\

I vaporize maybe several grams a day, more or less. Seems about 1/2 oz/month so it might be less but it seems constant (every couple hours).

My lungs are afwful. I have COPD. I had 1/3 lungs removed in 2007. I am in the hospital about twice a year lung related. If I didn't vape, I couldn't use unless I did only edibles. I cannot say in good conscience that anyone should be sucking foreign things into their lungs, but I can say vaporizing does not cause me to cough or choke or any of the many things that used to happen when I'd hit a bong ort a big fat joint or a 1-hitter. In my opinion properly using a vaporizer does not cause damage to my lungs, with the possible exception of the Pax which has really hot thick vapor that has caused me to cough. I use a Solo mainly and find it very fit for the job. Cigs - the worst - should be illegal.
As for water/glycerine I can say glycerine tubes are fantastic at cooling off - they just take work putting back into freezer etc and can get clogged with water if the diameter is too small. Water helps (me) alot; if I had unlimited glycerine tubes I'd use them all the time. I don't, so I use water bubblers instead.

    B) I am almost 35 now and when I started vaping I couldn't climb the stairs to the second floor without puffing hard. Vaping led to many positive changes in my lifestyle and now I can say I am living the best period in my life and I can even travel with my bicycle between cities with relative ease after 20 years of only car and motorcycle driving... :D

i just switched back to smoking now for like a week solid... no vaping. just small joints im not a huge hitter never have been so maybe that is why but.. i honestly can say i am breathing much better now... i had a terrible dry hacking cough from vaping and could tell it was really messing me up... my lungs and bronc was so irritated... but im feeling better now i really dont get it..

MrNorml can i ask did you start vaping before or after you found out you had copd? how old are you? do you and the doctors figure you got copd from smoking?

im not trying to be provocative im just trying to understand what the heck is going on with me and this vaping thing... i seem to be totaly backwards from most others here. i have had some mention of early copd on a couple x rays that never showed before i started vaping..
sometimes i really think its really messing my lungs up possibly from some kinda drying process.. our lungs are supossed to be like one of the most hydrated organs in the body i would think drying them out all the time with vaping could be very bad

MFLB runs very hot and some parts are not very cleanable, that can make it irritating a lot. Also that it has so short airpath.

I started vaping after the COPD diagnosis and before lung surgery. I'm 59 11/12 and doctors are sure the COPD is smoking-related; I'm more thinking it is a lot of things including various exposures as a kid to lots of bad stuff.
As for the dry cough, I personally keep liquids near the vape and sip them pretty much after every toke. Vaporizing is inhaling pretty dry stuff; the back of my throat can tell when I vape; drinking water helps. Using a bubbler also helps (me); the main think is keep water there. I think you may find it helps a lot with dry windpipe.

    A) On more frequent smoking periods, ~.3g
On less, ~.15g per 2~3 days
    I don't vape regularly

    B) Awesome! I bike to school every day, 1 mile trip 1 way so 2 miles round trip and I definitely make more than 1 trip a day. I also put myself in the gym MWF and cycle for 40-50 minutes, with my patented workout worked in there. I have never noticed any significant period where I say to myself "I should quit smoking" to be honest, I also never feel short of breath or significantly winded.
Also I don't smoke cigarettes, somewhat relevant to lung functions, yeah?

I average .53 through the day. Direct draw outdoors, moisture conditioning inside. I vape almost all the time, by small amounts, I have to stay medicated while saving stash.

My lungs are great. I breathe well, I got em checked on a medical scanner years ago, they were totally clean. I used to be a heavy smoker, up to 15 joints per day, the vaping suits my needs better and the problems are gone away

1-2 grams per day for the last 20 years.

Ever since giving up smoking for vaping, my lungs and entire respiratory system have improved dramatically. No more hacking up a lung in the morning, no more coughing, no more phlegm. No more chronic bronchitis and sounding like a wheezing asthmatic

I'm home for the holidays so I'm taking a break from cannabis for a couple weeks. So far I haven't vaped in a week or so and my throat and lungs don't feel any different. I interpret this to mean that while my vaping may have some adverse effects, they are not significant. I average about .2-.3g/day (less on weekdays, more on weekends). The day after I vape heavily (.5g+), I experience some mild coughing in the morning, but no phlegm.
