Wasting Material?

Exactly. There will be nothing but useless anecdotes floating around and people's ego/unwillingness to accept the possibility of ideas outside of the ones in their heads will continue this infinite circling discussion.

I don't mean that to sway the discussion here - but this an old and tried topic even among people I know personally. Do whatever you want but it's impossible to say "this is better" because there is nothing but subjective experience to go off of.

It may be better for you, but until there is some sort of study done, it's just wrong to say that "it's better (for everyone"

I know I get higher if I take a bigger hit over a smaller one. But I've never noticed a difference when holding in my breath regardless of the size of the hit taken.

Yes, you will get higher if you take a bigger hit over a smaller one.
BUT, would you get higher still IF you took 2 or 3 smaller hits where the volume of vapor is equal to the one larger hit BUT spread out over 2 or 3 pulls, to give your lungs much more dwell time to absorb the goodies?

I subscribe to the 2 or 3 small pulls = a higher high "school of thought".
Your lungs are not perfect extractors. They were designed to extract oxygen but tests show they only extract about 1/3 of the oxygen available in each breath.

By some people's definition of wasting having a tolerance in general is "wasting" material because it increases the amount you need without increasing the effects. I think there's plenty of evidence that exhaled vapor contains THC (I know reclaim has high THC content): http://mcrlabs.com/blog/we-tested-reclaim-and-this-is-what-we-found/

But if we apply a similar logic to wasting food would we then conclude that the best way to not waste food is to starve ourselves, lowering our metabolism so that we can survive on next to nothing. That might be true, but it is not the healthyest way. Likewise I imagine that holding our hits in until we turn blue is not healthy, but I still hold mine in as long as I feel comfortable. It helps that I used to play trumpet, and so I can hold my breath decently long.

Its sort of like saving AVB. I know science tells me it has THC, but I don't get anything out of it, so I toss it. Likewise science might tell you that the vapor you exhale has THC, but if you get higher/better effects from seeing a cloud, more power to you - the way you feel is no exact science.

I don't see any support for this being true. It may be, but comparison of exhaled vapor against pre-inhaled reclaim residue is not valid IMO.

you can try the rebreathing method, which you exhale a bit, and breathe back in a little, spend a little vapor out, and put a little more air in, again and again.
in that way, you dont turn blue and still holding and moving the vapor inside your lungs...

I think this is a happy medium. I usually save like 10% of my lung capacity after a draw so I can do this - but I only breathe in once.

Whether or not it makes my usage more efficient; I don't know.

It's nice just because of the cooling effect, which is why I do it. Sometimes prevents coughing, unless I took a monster rip... in which case I'm coughing regardless.

I think this method does work...
There is a theory that it's the movement of vapour across the cilia that aids absorption....
So by breathing in and out you are maximising the amount of vapour exposed to your lungs...

@CarolKing . . . There was a study I saw posted here a long time ago about contact highs. They put about a dozen people in a fairly small plexiglass box, with one control subject, and then they burned multiple joints each, about 50 or 60 in total IIRC. That extreme example was the only way they could get a positive result from inhaling second hand smoke. Vapor should be the same. You simply cannot get enough because the atmosphere dilutes the concentration to a point where only an extreme example will register on a test.

This sounds like hyperventilation, we used to (unadvisedly) do this to ourselves as kids for the rush.

Lol I feel you, I have a whole lot of avb saved up but hardly ever do anything with it either :\

I do have a better understanding of George's comment, but, whether I exhale vapor or not I get high. So I don't feel any material is being wasted.
I have also re vaped ABV several times and gotten just as, if not more high then before it was vaped.

For strictly scientific reasons I'm going to stop after the first pull when it's mostly flavor and virtually no vapor and to see if I get high. I'm also going to try the other inhale/exhale methods others have mentioned.

I used to vape my avb when I would run out of flowers through my infinity. That's the best vape for this purpose because avb yields less vapor and I compensate by loading huge bowls. But I can only do that for a couple days in a row if I want to avoid headaches because of the higher cbn ratio in avb. I'm pretty sure that the next time I run out and don't want spend $ is when I'll finally get serious about fixing the infinity

When this happens to me, sometimes i iso wash a load of it, end up with about a spoofull of oil,

    Eat it all at once....
I promise you it has a very noticeable effect....

I mentioned this in the liger thread but I think that most of the mmj waste happens with the way that most people dab.

Most people tend to cap while they inhale and when they run out of breath and do a first exhale, take the cap off. Some even take the cap off during the inhale (this is extremely inefficient in low-temp dabbing, as your vapor wants to take the path of least resistance which is rising above the nail)!

This means that all of the oil that hasn't yet boiled into vapor gets wasted in the form of vapor pouring into the air above the nail. I believe this may be a hangover from the quartz dabbing era, where the end of the dab generally tasted like shit and so most people accepted wasting it to taste it. I disagree with this approach, IMO one should take smaller dabs if their nail isn't capable of making the end of a larger dab taste proper. No need for waste, just take another smaller dab and enjoy taste without the waste!

For SiC, this isn't so relevant since SiC vaporizes oil the quickest of any surface and the taste is more consistent throughout the hit than quartz. You don't need to take much more than 1 long rip to finish a given dab on SiC at a tasty temp. If you do need an extra half rip to finish the hit after the first exhale, leaving the cap on to save your vapor in the meantime won't taste bad (there will be a slight dip in flavor)

With sapphire especially, we need to rethink how we dab to get the most efficiency and best flavor from our meds. Lower temps, longer 2-3 rip bowls leaving the carb cap on between rips until you get no more vapor are best suited to sapphire. With 5 star full melt, however, I would not inhale until there is no vapor left: instead you might stop ripping until you start to taste any non-melting residue cooking at all.

A lot of people, even with next gen e-nails might save a lot of money by changing the way they dab!

Cilia don't have anything to do with absorption. Cilia are essentially microscopic hairs. I think k you mean alveoli, the smaller "pockets" in the lung which conduct gas transfer and diffusion.

I went on about this in another thread and am not going to do it again, but someone please give me solid evidence about this belief that lungs need moving air/vape/gas in order to absorb anything. This is false.

Yeah you are right, the cilia are for moving particles....
Why don't we understand more about this...
By now we should know if holding vapour
    in does anything or not....
