True or False: If you see vapor as you exhale you are wasting the hit?

Big hits can feel like a "slap in the face" partially from oxygen deprivation!

I thought I'd post about something rather interesting I've noticed. Like someone posted earlier, I prefer sativa strains and low-ish temperatures. When I see a good low temp sativa cloud rolling up the tube of my vape bong, my lungs absorb almost all of it in a short time, maybe 10 - 15 seconds. However with some indicas or just higher temp (end of the bowl) hits, I have trouble seeing the cloud through the glass because it isn't quite as dense. Then after a full 20 seconds of holding my breath, on exhale there is still a huge amount of visible vapor! It seems like my lungs have adapted to the type of effects I prefer because the sativa cannabinoids (THC?) tend to hit me in the head and behind the eyes where I need it, whereas the indica cannabinoids (CBD?) give me more of a body high.

The higher temp is gonna cause thicker vapor not matter if its sativa or indica.

Your post confuses me cause you say
"I see a good low temp sativa cloud rolling up the tube of my vape bong, my lungs absorb almost all of it in a short time"

then

"I have trouble seeing the cloud through the glass because it isn't quite as dense. Then after a full 20 seconds of holding my breath, on exhale there is still a huge amount of visible vapor!"

So when you see vapor in your bong, you exhale nothing, but when you dont see vapor in the bong, u exhale a big cloud?

Also, THC and CBD are in both sativa and indicas, its the ratio of these two that give you different effects. Sativas are generally lower in CBD whereas indicas are higher in CBD.

Next time you vape, during the lower temp hits when you cant see vapor, blow your hit into a flashlight and I bet you that you will see your hit.

Sorry, it is kind of confusing. I meant that the lower temp is getting more THC, whereas the higher temp hit (also needed for some low THC, high CBD indicas) is getting more CBD. The low temp cannabinoids are easily absorbed but the higher temp cannabinoids are not.

Edit: I think what caused the confusion is I didn't specify that I start at a low temperature and end at a high temperature. It seemed like I was saying the first hit of a high temp bowl would not be cloudy, which is in fact untrue. What I was saying is that I vape out the low temp cannabinoids first and then move on to the higher temp cannabinoids.

Is there actually oxygen deprivation when vaporizing?

There's not combustion to consume the oxygen, so would the relative proportions of gas stay the same? Isn't it something like 20% oxygen in air?

Hmmm, actually thinking aloud....How does humidity affect these levels? Assuming our vapor is analogous to water vapor I query if it should affect these levels to any extent great enough to cause oxygen deprivation? Even in air of 98% humidity, carrying nearly the maximum amount of water vapor (breathing in cloud on a mountain, or a sauna) I don't experience any kind of oxygen deprivation or significantly reduced availability. MJ vapor is clearly thicker than water vapor- Could we carry enough mj vapor in the air to somehow displace the oxygen, or meaningfully reduce it's relative concentration? Or doesn't it work like that...?

Any physicists/chemists in da house?

well, holding your breath for that long doing anything is going to cause oxygen deprivation.
especially 8-10+ seconds inhale PLUS draw time and re-inhales

I think the oxygen deprivation really depends on a few things. For example I live at high altitude and personally I need to hold my breath for 45+ seconds in order to start feeling a little woozy.

Another variable I don't think we have considered is that low temperature vapor is often not visible to the naked eye so exhaling and not seeing vapor is not necessarily a good indicator that you have absorbed more actives. I don't have any empirical data but I have noticed that cloudier vapor isn't always necessarily more potent vapor. If we operate under this assumption, then we have to reexamine how much thc/cbd/cbns is wasted just by looking at how much visible vapor is exhaled.

For the record, I hold my hits in for a few seconds and then exhale. As Luchiano alluded to earlier, there are ways you can prep your body to more efficiently absorb vapor. There is a benefit to being able to more efficiently absorb vapor and that is the vapor isn't sitting in your lungs for a long time. As benign as vapor is, the longer something other than fresh air sits in your lungs, the worse it is for you. If you train your lungs with exercise and breathing techniques, you can improve your ability to rapidly absorb the actives without vapor sitting in your lungs for a long time, it is a win/win.

Thoughts?

it seems to me that having vapor in the exhale is inevitable ... i find a very slow, long inhale (30 seconds) is most effective (for my vape) to extract a satisfying amount of vapor per hit -- kind of like a long sigh. And then i like a long slow exhale, just letting the vapor drift out of my mouth.

i guess my vape is wasteful since the bud is inside the oven, when the vapor is ready to flow, it just gotta flow. kwim? so i slow down the process of assimilation.

One can improve efficiency noticeably by not holding their drag at all, but letting a little out and breathing a bit of air in repeatedly (as many times as possible). This causes the vapor to move past the lung tissue more than just holding still. Lungs are like a natural mesh of pockets and spongey material, fluids, and hairs. In the end it always comes down to large gusts wastefully but enjoyably exhaled or small sips with meticulous efforts to absorb all of the components?

If you're vaping and the general temperature around you is pretty cold, how can you tell if it's vapor you are exhaling or just the condensation from your breath?

I came across this "exhale condensation calculator" (http://www.sciencebits.com/ExhaleCondCalc), you enter a value for the temperature of the air you exhale (vape), and the temperature of the air you are exhaling into (environment).

I set the temp of the air you exhale to 185 Celcius, roughly the same setting I use on my Volcano. Although that most likely cools somewhat during the length of time you have the vape in your lungs until you exhale. According to this calculator, your breath will condense in environments up to 31 degrees Celcius.

Don't know if anybody will find that usefull, but I guess it's nice to know anyway :)

does your body only absorb what touches your lungs? like the walls of a bong? if that's the case, does the vapor, smoke.. whatever... just sit there or does it move around in my lungs?

its going to move a little but not much, theres lots that isnt going to get absorbed without re-breathing techniques.

also, this is amplified with bigger hits.
that is one of the additional reasons smaller hits tend to be more efficient, although big hit+re-breathing is great for getting vaked fast and heavy

THC is absorbed by the lungs rather quickly, however there are a whole mess of other active compounds that are being absorbed the longer the breath is held. Though I must agree with those who say holding your breath for too long can cause some negative effects on the mind, so don't forget to breath.

I try not to hold it in too long that heat and extra exposure can't be good for your lungs.

you people holding for +30 seconds, have you ever just passed out? there is no way i could do this...maybe i should be vaping at lower temps?

Said perfectly! :2c:

darkrom,
I'm more worried about the majority of vapor hitting the end of my tongue and staying there. My jaw is not really straight at all so keeping it down is a pain. :/

I've exhaled visible vapor, but wonder if it is just irrelevant excess at times. I try not to hold excess at all unless rationing materials is necessary.

for those speaking of oxygen deprivation, I have passed out after taking a very high temp vapor bong ripper out my california box vape. must've held it in for 30+ seconds before feeling extremely light headed, fell on the corner of my bed and rolled off face-first onto the floor

not one of my proudest moments :ko:. while my carpet softened the impact, it also left a big red rug burn for everyone at school to see the next day
