The Nomad From Morwood

I pretty much have what I want set in my mind, but I can't decide on a fricking button! It's getting so close to the second list but every time I try to force myself to decide I just lock up. They're all so beautiful, but I don't know what would fit what I'm going to do...hmm...

I'm excited to soon begin the process of designing my Nomad with Dan, but, damn, I must say... reading about and watching the process of these Nomads being made has been rewarding in and of itself. All of it has just made me more excited to one day hold mine in my hands. Even seeing the completed Nomads makes me all the more excited yet surprisingly more patient!

I deeply admire how serious and dedicated you are to making a functional, safe, beautiful piece of art.

They are all so beautiful no wonder you can't decide. How do you know that you are on the second list? Do you get an email when your name is getting closer?

I may be on a later list, but at least I'm on one.

I don't mind waiting for this. Though, I very much appreciate @Dan Morrison keeping us all up to date on the development as he does. I just need to be patient.

The people on the second list got an email about it after the email lottery for the first batch, the 20 who came closest to getting on the first list without making it are the people who make up the second batch

I just realized since I'm on the reserve list I have to choose what I want soon! I don't know if seeing these completed units makes that decision easier or harder though, they're all so beautiful!
Let me help you out by giving you more time to think! You don't want to make this decision in haste. Think about it, list options then just let it foment. You want to make sure you're right the first time right!

LAWD!!! Kinda glad i am further down the list as well. Gives me time to decide on colors...I also agree with someones post that said that burl unit was amazing.

So I only have one more question/concern about the nomad:

If there will ever be a non-glass version of the stem.
That glass is the only risk I see in carrying this thing around as a daily portable device.

I'd love to see an all-wood stem like we've seen from Alan as well as others.

If PEEK is safe for the heater, maybe it's safe for a stem option as well? Even a split PEEK/glass stem so the glass is entirely enclosed in the unit and the PEEK as the exposed mouthpiece.

Even a shorter glass stem, that could be pushed into the vape entirely when not in use, similar to how the Haze mouthpiece works? This would put your load a little further from the heater in use, but would protect the glass more in transit.

Oh yeah, and also, is there going to be a WPA option? One was vaguely hinted at for the Okin but it never ended up happening.

Just wondering where the first group is at. Have you gotten your nomads? Any videos of them?
I don't think any have gone out yet, I believe Dan is still dealing with the center pin change. I figure we'll probably get an update from him once they go out, he probably won't leave us hanging in suspense for too long

Still waiting, but I’m ok with that. I’m sure Dan is as anxious to get to the second batch as we are to receive the first.

Also I was wondering, if the steel pin melted the sodder, how did the PEEK insulator hold up with that new more conductive steel pin? I presume fine though...

The problem with the SS pin is that it couldn't dissipate the heat fast enough. So, actually, the brass pin originally used would have transferred even more heat back down to the PEEK insulator. Either way, I tested the PEEK insulator with the SS pin and it's just fine, well within temp limits.

I'd love to see an all-wood stem like we've seen from Alan as well as others.

An all wood stem would be doable!

I'd like to make a two part stem, with wood for the main body that extends out the top of the Nomad, but glass down below for the bowl area.

A WPA can be adapted easily because of the standard sized glass stem.

............................................

Now, onto the events this week. The new heater module design is born!

All ya'll thought that the Nomad itself was the star of the show, but no no, IMO it's this heater module.

I've developed the new and improved silver braze joining method. These connections are on a whole new level, stronger than the base metal itself, many times more resistant than the old stuff, it's mainly pure silver, cadmium free (of course).

The brazing technique was much more involved than the previous low temp silver solder. Brazing nichrome is no easy task, and it's only made more difficult by the tiny scale of the joints.

But the process is figured out now, and all is good to go for making these heater modules.

Here is one finished up. It's probably the toughest thing I've ever had to make. SO pumped about how it turned out!

Notice the tiny stainless set screw. You can loosen this screw and spin the insulator disc to adjust the tightness of the wound coil. Wind the coil tighter, and the coil will let in more air around the outside, creating a tighter weave near the center pin. Wind the coil looser, and the weave will open up around the center pin, letting more air flow through the center.
