Sourcing glass for DIY vaporizer

Hi all,

I'm building a vaporizer and I'm looking for some suggestions regarding glassware. I'm an EE so glass is completely foreign to me. This is what the current design is:

There's two pieces of glass that are needed. The glass tube between the two cubes is standard scientific tubing -- that's not a problem.

However, the little glass outlet port on the right cube is a design challenge for me. The reason for that port is because there needs to be a thermocouple in the airpath. I can't use a single heater cover from the SSV or another vape because I don't want to drill into the glass. I want to be able to attach a standard vaporizer wand to the top -- specifically something dual screen since the output is vertical (i.e https://www.vaporstore.com/proddetail.php?prod=VT-DXHK). The other end of the outlet port can be pretty much any shape that I can drill into that block of wood.

Here's approximately what I'm looking for:

I've thought of contacting a glass blower, but I don't know what to ask for. What exactly is the technical term for the glass-on-glass, male connector that wands attach to? What "diameter" (18mm, 19mm?) is that VaporTower dual screen wand?

And is there any off the shelf glass that I can adapt to fit this design?

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

I'd recommend contacting a blower with an Etsy shop to make that for you (simpleglasstubes or oregonglassblower come to mind). Just send them the picture you posted and ask for a quote. The dual screen wand will fit just fine.

I think some of these might have what you need, you can also try some existing vaporizer accessories like already mentioned.

One more idea if you needed custom work is Etsy.com Just type in "Glass pipe" and search through for someone you think has nice work (they have many glass artist on that site that are willing to do custom work, some would probably even look at your picture and suggest a glass design for you)

@jorcon - how are you doing temperature contol? if you don't mind me asking.

@hippie -- no problem, your work has been an inspiration for my design

I use two temperature readings. The heating element is a ceramic rod (Hakko, Xytronic etc) which has a thermistor of sorts in it (I suspect just a wire wound resistor). The second reading is from the thermocouple in the airpath.

When the unit is idle (just turned on or nobody is drawing air), I regulate the ceramic heater temperature with a PI control loop to ~400 Celsius. I schedule the gain so that when I'm more than 50C away from the setpoint, it turns the heater completely on or off for quicker heatup and cooldown.

At the same time I monitor for sharp changes in the airpath temperature (from the thermocouple), which would indicate somebody drawing air. If this is the case, I stop regulating the heater temperature and start controlling the amount of heat to get the thermocouple to 200C (also PI loop, different gains than heater). The thermocouple is several millimeters away from the herb, so it's a very accurate reading. I don't know if other vaporizers do airpath temperature regulation.

I can get +/- 3 Celsius control if you draw smoothly. The herb is several inches away from the heater and the thermocouples have a noticeable time constant, so getting the system to be stable takes a bit of tuning.

Sounds good with the two temperature readings ... which micro processor are you using?

why did you decide to drop the "D" gain? i think this compensates for a drop in temperature during a toke ... i'm seeing a slight rise in temp during and just after a toke.

Are you thinking about going into production?
