I have never found out if blown out vapor is wasted vapor. I tend to hold mine in for 10 seconds, exhale slightly, then inhale and repeat until i see no visible vapor.

Maybe I will try recycling a hit with a friend and a baloon and see if that works

I too hold mine for 10 seconds, exhale slightly, then inhale again, but I can't do it till I see no more vapor 'cause the LSV gives such huge hits, that I'd be doing that all day on one hit.

I always wonder about this myself. I hold in my hits for a good 7-10 seconds, and tend not to get many clouds when I exhale. I'm always surprised when I see people exhale immediately or just after a second or two.

I have no discipline. Sometimes I keep it in until nothing comes out while taking zips of fresh air just so I don't pass out, and other times I just don't think about it at all and breath out right after inhaling. It's just a matter of how focused I am I guess

It depends on the quality for me. I sometimes hold my SSV hits for a minute or more, if I'm vaping high quality, or trying to conserve my dwindling supply.

Here is a little experiment for who ever wants to try.

First hit of the day write down how much you used and how many seconds you inhaled. Hold the hit for 3 seconds and then exhale. Write down if you coughed. Write down how many minutes it took to feel high. Write down how high you feel. Write down how long you felt high. Write down what the high is like.

The next day do it over. This time hold the hit for 7 seconds. Compare the high to the high the day before.

End result. You find out if their is a difference to you between holding in a hit for 3 seconds compared to 7 seconds.

I find that if I hold my hits in longer I get a significantly more sedative effect versus holding them in less time, I've often wondered if there are certain cannabinoids that are more efficiently absorbed given more time in contact with the lungs.
That said, when I vape with friends I find i tend to hold my hits in for less time. On my own I fairly frequently take deep inhales and exhales for about 30 seconds prior to taking the hit then I fully exhale and take a HUGE hit and hold that bastard in! dab style room spinning!

Hmm.. Calculating exactly how much THC that is in the lungs may be an issue as one day you might get a significantly stronger rip than the other.

May possibly work with a bag style though

If I take a big rip it seems to get me blazed regardless of if I hold it in, and if I take a small rip it does not seem to get me as ripped as a big one will wither I hold it in or not

Usually 2-3 seconds. The difference for me when holding it in longer is negligible so I don't even bother.

2 - 3 seconds from the time I stop inhaling completely. If I add inhalation time, then the final time would be something like 15 seconds.

That's a very interesting thought. I wonder if any research has been done on this topic...... gonna have to look into this.

My thought process is: if you're vaping, then 90% of the vapor is cannabinoids that you want (if you have good, well prepped herb and a good vape), so if you're exhaling big clouds...then you're exhaling valuable cannabinoids. With smoking, 75-85% of the smoke is tars, carcinogens, and other byproducts of combustion that some people might not want, so exhaling early isn't nearly as wasteful.

Now obviously, everyone has a personal threshold of when holding it in too long isn't worth it, even if it does get you higher, so if you just don't like to hold it in, then that's no problem. But unless my research is off (and feel free to tell me if you think it is) holding vapor in is much more effective than holding in smoke.

For me, I like to take a hit for about 10 seconds, then keep inhaling for about another 3, and hold it for about 7. I make sure and use a stopwatch EVERY TIME. Hahahaha, totally kidding...these are just what I think I do.

Since I need to conserve, I hold my hits as long as possible. ***This is my post here with my new Samsung tablet. :)

My question would be, what about how long you take your rip for? If I take a ten second rip and hold it for fifteen seconds, then I'm holding that much for less time than if I took a thirty second rip that I only hold for two seconds.

I've heard that the adsorbtion process is aided by activley inhaling and exhaling, but I have no knowledge as to the validity of this statement. If it is true, would it be better to keep inhaling rather than just holding it in? Or would taking small breaths in and out while retaining most the vapor be best?

I read in a study that in the first 10 seconds, about 95% of the cannabinoids are absorbed.

I timed my most frequent type of hit, either with water or dry, i tend to take a +30sec hit, can go as long as 45sec, and then i hold for 5 sec, and i exhale slowly for about 2-3 seconds, inhale again and then i exhale the rest.

I do like to see the vapour, it is a pleasurable thing to me.. sometimes i even make rings like when i used to smoke. And i don't have the patience to do small hits and seeing no vapour at all most of the times, although sometimes i do the exhale for 2sec, and the moment i see the vapour i hold it for 10sec and usually there is no more vapour in the second exhale. This is not the norm though since i seem to not notice that big difference between the two methods i use.

I think the important thing to keep in mind is to do a deep inhale. I use a respiratory technique i learned in yoga, where you inhale by inflating your belly first, then you open your rib cage and only then you do that inhale where your chest goes up.

I find this helps me maximize air volume and absorption, as well as a longer inhale time.

If you do a shallow breathing and quickly exhale, that is when you are wasting cannabinoids. If you do a long inhale, you are absorbing the cannabinoids already in your lungs and at the same time you keep filling up more.

BUT, and this is only an hypothesis, if you do a 15sec DEEP inhale, and then inhale just air, and hold it in for 10sec for example, that would be one of the most efficient ways to inhale.
When i do it this way, i almost never exhale any visible vapour.

Same. I try to hold in longer with my Solo hits, but my lungs won't let me

Taking a bigger hit will always get you higher - I see your point. Assuming you're drawing properly, the absolute most efficient way to hit a vape would be inhale for 3 straight minutes, lol...and at that point it's pretty much irrelevant whether or not you exhale quickly. But obviously that's impossible.

To me, in the end, it's whatever is most comfortable. Some people hate holding it in, and some people really dig it. For me, feelin' good and being comfy is the goal though, regardless of how high I am.

i try to keep a 1:3 hit:hold ratio and find i absorb most actives with this method.

I always inhale as deeply as I can after finishing a hit. Your lungs are much more efficient at processing cannabinoids then vapor left in the esophagus. By inhaling deeply from my diaphragm using a technique similar to vorrange I am ensuring full vapor delivery to the lungs. Which also IMO aids in maximizing absorption by forcing the vapor to be absorbed faster by maintaing a higher pressure in my lungs. I take large hits so I normally hold for 10 seconds exhale a bit less then half, then inhale deeply again and hold for about 7ish. I prefer to see vapor in exhale, but then again I love to vape. I use an ecig just for fun, smoke shop ran out of nic free juice the other day so I am vaping a nic juice lol I just like the taste I don't even inhale 90% of time it's like a tasty vapor cigar haha.

Ya I totally agree with this. I always try and inhale a few more seconds after ending my hit so that all the vapor gets deep into my lungs.

I think the main problem here is ultimately lack of proper scientific study,

Everybody has their own theorys, the lungs only absorb when expanding, the thc is instantly absorbed, the thc takes 10 seconds to fully absorb etc etc, but I have yet to find a reputable source or any real evidence besides word of mouth. I suppose all you can do is what works for you..

Even though this can be borderline superstitious, I have heard of people vaping upside down in the hope that the vapor actually rises into the lungs. Headstand sesh anyone?

There is one constant here and that is your beating heart. The lungs are a selective, permeable, membrane exchanging gases in and out of the blood with every heart beat. It is, by far, the most intimate part of your body. While we don't have a way of analyzing exhaled vapor, I simply count heart beats instead of seconds, especially on a good hit, they can be worth paying attention to ;)

lwein I didn't know you got a LSV. Compare it to your beloved log vape? I'm generally interested. I've always enjoyed 7th floor vapes and that IMO is the best looking one simply due to design shape.

In an effort to not derail this thread (which I rarely do), check out the PD comparison on post #1867 along with my following posts, this thread: http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/7th-floor-life-saber-lsv.2641/page-75

I will say this though. My consumption has about doubled as of last night since getting the LSV, but the whole vaping experience is so much more enjoyable. I'm not vaping any more often, just getting much larger, tastier hits. Feel bad for my PD. It's just sitting there all cold and lonely.
