I'm hoping you guys can help me to make the transition from combustion water-bong to vaping.

I'm currently 1025 days free of tobacco & spliffs, one of the hardest things about giving up was trying to imagine how I could be satisfied with smoking pure & the other misconception that it would use more weed, the reality has been higher, longer lasting, better quality highs, way less weed being used & of course the health benefits. One of the best decisions I've made in my life.

So now I'm thinking about getting a vape, I've only tried a vape once back in 1997, at least I think it was a vape, it was homemade, a kind of glass bell jar with a little pedestal inside where you put the meds, turn it on for 20 mins then as someone tilted and held the glass bell jar...you would slip a straw under the bottom edge to inhale the vapour.

My main question at this stage, how do non-portable vapes like the Cano, HA, SSV etc handle small amounts, is there a min amount? On average I bong around 4-5 hits per day, which uses around 0.3g-0.6g per day, each hit is around: 0.045g-0.075g, which is a 1 visit inhale/exhale. I'm struggling to imagine how this will translate when I start vaping, is it possible to vape 0.045g into a bag(they look huge) or would I have to vape my daily amount( 0.045g-0.075g ) into a bag then make the bag last all day, what happens on the days I only have time for a single 0.045g-0.075g hit?

Thanks in advance for any feedback?

You need vape that has either a very small bowl (log vapes). MFLB also has a small bowl, but IMO it would not be a satysfying transition from bongs.
Or a vape with medium-sized bowls and precise extraction. For example the Cloud.
Or a sublimator, if you want ultimate one-hitter, if you won't burn yourself with that, and have the budget.

Vapes with large bowls like Volcano won't do small load very well.
Yes, they can, but a small load in a huge bowl will just make some mess, will hide in corners and give a lot of very airy hits.
It will vaporize, but it's taking a cannon to kill a mosquito.

indeed soundfs like a log would be something for you. my main vape is an underdog(wich is one of the logvapes), and since the bowl is easily removable between hits, it works well to take a hit and put it away again, since it doesn't keep being heated.

logvapes are also easy to connnect to a bong, most of my vaping is done trough my bong.

log vapes do have a heat up tiome, but you can keep it on 24/7 and it's always ready to go. personally I turn mine off at night, but during the day, and I'm home, it's usually on.

You can also go for a Lotus... It has the same efficiency a good log has, can be attached to a bong, plus you can use it as a stand alone pipe, a most pleasant experience as you are used to lighters, and of course you will be plug free, with amazing autonomy due to the butane/flame use and better heat retention than most logs.
With good quality herbs I vape all day with half a gram and go up to one gram with lesser stuff. But you can go with even less as you can load .025-.05 loads and still have 2-3 very satisfying hits. You can do even smaller loads if you wish to. Even a spec of herb can give you a hit if it's resinous enough. Absorption will also be better than with a bong as your lungs will be able to absorb more THC in a couple more potent hits than with one combusted bong hit which destroys much of the cannabinoids on the way. Welcome to vaping bro!

EDIT: I fully agree that a big bowl vaporizer is overkill for small loads and they are usually more expensive as well if you need a desktop AND efficiency. That's why I prefer portables mostly. Full convection portables that is... For their super efficiency plus freedom of movement! Can't beat the combination! :D

I agree with the others, get a log vape for what you want. you can easily pack only 0.05-0.1 and still pull several very satisfying bong hits. With a log you can just leave the stem in your bong in between hits and leave the log plugged in so you can take a rip whenever you want and you don't have to finish the bowl each time.
Based on the fact that you only take one hit at a time, I would definitely rule out the Cano. No need to fill a bag if you only want one hit, also most here prefer direct draw over bags anyway.

edit: BTW congratulations on nearly 3 years tobacco free.

Yet another vote for the Lotus.

It is a recent buy of mine but it is one of my most used vapes. Buy the kit which brings a jet lighter and a bong adapter.

That way you can use it with your glass and you have a portable convection vaporizer.

The only disadvantage is that you need to learn the technique first instead of pressing a button and letting it heat for you.
IMO, this is not needed and the Lotus delivers in spades in every important variable: taste, efficiency, extraction and it's fast. From thinking of vaping to actually vaping it's less than 30 seconds.

If you want something more automatic, get a log vape. The HI is my favorite and it's what i own, the Nano is 110V so it heats the fastest of them, the Underdog is like the HI but the wood is very well worked into beautiful shapes.

Either of these will leave you happy. I would start with the Lotus, for the price it's unbeatable IMO.

I use a 14mm/14mm M/M gg adapter as the wand in my DBV and load approximately .033g bowls and get at least couple of good hits off it thru my D020 bubbler.

I'll chime in here and put my vote in for a log vape (never used a Lotus before though). With the Purple Days (log vape that is no longer being produced) that I used as my daily driver for over 4 years, I was able to fill a stem with a mere .025gr and get 5 hits from it (2 very satisfying, and 3 more a bit smaller).

Bear with me, it takes time to research & mull over your suggestions.

Sublimator: Looks good, if it does what it controversially says on the tin, however is way over my budget for a 1st vape & not available in the UK.

Log/Wychwood: These do look interesting based on what people say about them, however they are not available in the UK since the only supplier(Wychwood) has moved on.

Cloud: Has good reviews but quite pricey for the spec & can be difficult to source in the UK ...also there are issues with faulty units and customers being told they will have wait months for parts.

Lotus: Good price, not sure about the lack of control...temps etc, might be more suitable as a 2nd vape when I know what I'm doing a bit more, However this is probably all academic as they are not available in the UK.
    ----------------------------------

To be clear, I don't want to limit myself to just finding something similar to the combustion-bong, when I stopped smoking tobacco spliffs my ingestion routine completely changed, instead of waking and baking, it's now much later in the day before I have a hit, have way fewer hits & smoke much less. I'm open to more changes when moving to vapes as long as it's using the same/less weed, is healthier & doesn't get too crazy.

I'm thinking I should at least try the various methods; bags, direct/bong draw etc..just to see how it goes, also some kind of accurate temp control would be good for me being a 1st timer so I can compare effects.

With the larger desktop vapes people are saying they don't do well with smaller amounts:

Could I not just load up the chamber with my daily amount(0.3g) then hit the same chamber throughout the day? ...either by partially filling ballons or direct draw via bong?

Would the partially spent weed be ok in the chamber overnight?....so the days I only have one hit I could just fire up what's left in the chamber, or if its empty then load up another daily amount(0.3g) & take 1 hit?

Or, if these small amounts really don't do well in desktop vapes, maybe I could modify the chamber to create a smaller bowl, like a custom made glass piece with a hole suitable for a smaller(standard sized) glass bowl/gog ...the custom glass piece would insert or sit over the original fitting?

It says in the Volcano manual that ballons should be filled no longer than 10 mins before use, with ballons in general is there a reason for this, can be bags be kept longer, hours, days etc.

Don't get the Volcano. And if you're aiming for the Cloud, you could wait a few months and get their new model, the EVO.

    Check verdampftnochmal.de , lacentralevapeur.com , vaposhop.com , everyonedoesit.co.uk , paradox.co.uk and vapefiend.co.uk to see what the EU market has.

If you want a log without being a log, the closest to it are the Solo and the Lotus.
One you can fix the temps and the heater does the rest, the other is all manual. I prefer the Lotus and i think it gives you a superior experience.

For all around units, you have the Herbalaire and the Extreme Q.

About the desktop, you can leave it and continue the next day but the herb will be losing canabinoids because you already heated it and grinded it. Not much, but it will.

If you really don't want to mess with a manual vape, as easy as i think the Lotus is to master, i would get the Solo.

It seems the most adequate for your usage.

(P.S: Why not about the Volcano? It's big, noisy, expensive, very inefficient, not very flavourfull and a pain to clean. )

Vapolution 2. Can stay on 24/7 just like a log vape. Pure glass airpath = amazing taste. Is as miserly with your weed as any log vape. You can simply remove the stem and vape leftover weed at any time.

Now, the best part. Can be had for under 100$ using the FC code.

I haven't had a Vap2 - but from everyone I know who does says for the price it astounding how it hangs with the heaviest hitters.

I've also heard the flavor is fantastic. I couldn't imagine it being a bad choice.

The reason that S&B states that is that as soon as the vapor enters the bag, it begins to condense and go stale and begins to start tasting kinda nasty.. From my experience, you want to totally use up whatever is in the bag within 10 minutes.

    EpicVape E-Nano.

    http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/e-nano-from-epicvape.7844/

    Everyone overlooks it.

It is by far the most conservative (herb use wise) vape I've ever used. TINY bowls for huge clouds and effect. Also only takes a few minutes to heat up from cold... and as you can see it also does concentrates like a boss. Better than using a nail and torch IMO.

I also think the Vapolution 2 is a great choice Its around 120 usd shipped to the UK. Also from what I've read the E-Nano does look right for your situation. You may want to check out the FlashVape it's great to have around to pick up and take a big tasty hit or two when ever you want.

Oh he's in the EU? The nano runs off a native 110v power source. You'd need a ~$20 USD step-down power converter to run it. Not a big issue but something the OP should be aware of.

Lots of great leads there, thanks guys.

When people talk about vapes being inefficient or using more/less weed, what do they mean? Assuming any given vape can reach the required temp range & is functioning properly then surely it can only vaporise what's in the chamber?

It's not just if the vape in question can get to the correct temperature. It must also bring the material to that temperature as throughly and evenly as possible, as well as deliver it to the user with minimal condensation in the vapor path.

There are also things like the size of the oil droplets themselves in the vapor stream, smaller drops are better absorbed. Some vapes like the subliminator use an atomizer in conjunction with a heat injector to break the drops up more.

Other vapes like the Cloud utilize turbulence in the air stream to accomplish the same goals.

All of these things together play a big part in a vape's extraction efficiency.

There are a number of different factors to consider. it isn't about reaching one specific temperature, different cannabinoids will vaporize more readily at different temperatures. Some units like the wispr, iolite, pinnacle (not the pro) can't get hot enough to fully vaporize all of the actives.

Another way a vape can be inefficient is if it is constantly heating the herb and letting the vapor escape or condense. This would be a unit like the pax or also the cheap metal plate/glass globe vapes.

Great points above in regards to what makes one vaporizer more efficient than another.

One other key thing to consider regarding efficiency is the size of the bowl and if a vaporizer "encourages" the use of less bud over another. Case in point. When I went from my VERY efficient Purple Days to my LSV, my consumption increased about 30%. Now granted, I could load up the LSV with the same amount of bud that I used in my PD and the efficiency would be about the same, but if I did that, it would be akin to having the keys to a Ferrari but never taking it over 30mph............ie.........REALLY, really hard to do.

Efficiency is mostly up to the user, but big hitters have longer vapor paths and/or water filtration, which means more loss due to condensation. Plus, the satisfaction level is low, since a small hit in the big hitter results in the 'did I get anything?' effect.

Compared to the PD, the nano is a big hitter. I've used both models extensively. The PD has a smaller bowl, more narrow vapor path, and a fixed temp. That said, the nano is a good choice for those wanting a model that can do really small amounts (just load small) efficiently, and provide big hits as well.

I'm starting to realise Vapes are a very personal thing, really I would need to spend a week with each of the contenders until all have been tested, go back do it all again.....then decide.

My shortlist at the moment is the SSV(small bowl mod or the vapour brothers mini whip...it's said in the ssv thread you can load 0.05g with this setup) or the Nano.

The only thing that puts me off the nano is the hassle of shipping US-->UK, taxes, power adapters & if it becomes defective then more expense & wait sending it back to the US.
