Need help choosing a portable vaporizer

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a vaporizer that is convection based, can load large amounts (0.25~ at least), has high extraction, is low maintenence/easy to clean, good efficiency, compatible with dosing caps or something similar, and offers good aftermarket options for water, preferably some kind of bubbler stem addition

Based on these preferences it looks like the Fierce would be a great candidate no?

I've also heard things about the Splinter Z, Lil bud, Milaana 2, Tubo evic, Tubo X, Firewood 5, etc.. What is the primary difference between these vaporizers? I'm aware of the whole 510 thing, but which would you say checks off most of my preferences? Initially I had somewhat dismissed the Splinter Z when I saw the bowl size, but then I heard you are able to use multiple baskets at once? What about dosing caps?

Thanks

I would say that anything from the StickyBrick line is an excellent choice based on your criteria.
You’d just need to pick what size you’re into.
Models now come with restrictive discs so user error isn’t really an issue with these like it used to be.

1. It can hold around .3g of material give or take.
2. They are known for being very low maintenance and there’s little cleaning to do.
3. Excellent efficiency and pure convection heating.
4. Water pipe compatible variants of the vape exist and parts for glass are widely available for all models.
5. Butane vapes will melt your fuckin face off. (In a good way)

If you’re dead set on battery powered vapes and if you don’t want to use a small butane torch, then maybe it’s not the right one for you.
But always remember, gas is cheaper than electricity ;)

Ahh my bad. Forgot to mention butane vapes aren't really my thing either. You do make a strong case though

What vapes do you own now? You do not say anything about desktops? A FlowerPot (Desktop) would meet your requirements. I also own a Z, but if you place .25 in the stem you will need to stir which imho es no bueno.

In that case I believe that with the Z you can use multiple baskets at once. Is there anything that you’re currently using that you could compare to what you’re interested in?
Just a handy, combustion dependant, water pipe. Only recently got back into herb due to unfortunate, newfound, chronic illness after about 4 years off. Difference now although is that I am using cbd flower

I did have an old friend who owned the original arizer solo that I got to have some experience with. Primary issues were bowl size and draw resistance

Are you aware how the bowl size of the other vapes mentioned compare to the Splinter Z or Fierce? These are looking like my top two candidates as of now although I do still have some digging to do. I really hate reloading

As mentioned above, nada. I'm aware there are some fantastic options for desktops but I am looking to get a portable first

And yes I agree, stirring really is no bueno and if this is in fact required when loading these amounts I will likely have to go with something else

It looks like the actual size doesn't matter if you're considering one with a box mod. I like my splinter z and use it as a backup. You might check out the iheat as well- you didn't mention it. It also uses a box mod. It heats up faster than most portables including the z.

Fierce, Splinter Z, Firewood 5, Ghost MV-1. All will give you great effects.

Although the Fierce will lag behind the others taste-wise, I think you will be happy with the Fierce as your entry vape. And it will make a good out & about vape for when you get your 2nd vape.

I’m sorry to hear about the health issues and I hope the best for you in that regard.
If you were previously used to combusting in order to get medicated, then I am still going to 100% recommend that you at least look into a butane vaporizer. The high temperatures, convection heating, and full extraction coupled with the ritualistic use are all aspects that appeal to both former smokers and medical users who need a strong dose in a short period of time. Butane vapes are also “on demand” meaning you can get as little or large of an amount of medication out of your herb without needing to sit down and have a session.
Obnoxiously long lasting devices, lower maintenance, and not needing to worry much about dropping and breaking are also big pluses.

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.
In the battery portable world, I do love my Fury 2 which is the little cousin of the Fierce. I like the stealthiness of the Fury 2 and will take the smaller size although you have less battery time than the Fierce. Otherwise, from what I hear from folks on the Healthyrips thread, lots of good reports on the Fierce and its accessories. I've not seen a comparison, but the bowl size is larger than the Fury 2. When you use dosing caps, you get convenience but lose a little on the amount of herb that you can fit in the chamber. Plus they have excellent customer service and a great warranty.

Now I must tell you, I am exploring the world of cartridge pens lately (the 510 thing you mention ;)). I have used a pre-loaded cartridge of distillate/CO2 oil a few times in the past and enjoyed it. I didn't continue with it because all that was available were cartridges that mixed cannabis oil with a solvent such as PG and VG. Nowadays you can get pure cannabis oil without additives more easily. I just ordered one of these little batteries to power the cartridges.
https://www.puffitup.com/CCell-Palm-510-Battery-p/cc.th2.htm

They are pretty popular and if you have access to pre-filled or load your own cartridges, then it makes a very easy to use set up. You just hit the pen and blow big clouds, until the cartridge runs out and then you stick a new one in. Very discrete and effective for a portable need. They can clog up sometimes so there are ups and downs. Maybe not your only vape, but a great addition to your arsenal for a cheap price.

I agree about the fierce- I have the smaller fury and think its big brother would be a good beginning vape. The vapcap has lots of fans and although you don't want butane you could get a portable vapcap induction heater. It's the only way I'll use a vapcap and it works well. It's not truly portable in the sense you can bring it out and about with you but it's a good butane alternative for home use.
And again the iheat- one of the advantages of the iheat over many of the other devices like the z is that its creator- Alan, is very hands on. He responds quickly to emails. He also designs stems for many of the other devices like the splinter or nomad.

Sorry, @little maggie, although I have never used an iHeat, I know in my gut from reading the threads that the Z is superior to the iH. Besides, isn't the iH's heater based on the Z's?

Are you reading posts from people who own both the iheat and Z when you say the Z is superior? That surprises me. The iheat heats much quicker and has no mica or glue.
I think at one point Alan and RBT were going to work together on a vape and when that didn't work out they each made their own. Alan describes the iheat as more similar to the milaana but is set up differently.

Not only having the Z & Splinter, the threads, but also having reached out in pms to peeps who own both when making my decision.

The iheat heats much quicker and has no mica or glue.

Heat time in seconds & the inclusion of mica & glue aren't factors for me, especially after I saw RBT do a glass repair.

These are just my feelings.

Anyway, not looking to hijack this thread. :peace:

Ok- not sure what RBT did with glass- I have all of his products so far. But I'm not sure if clarifying the difference between the splinters and iheat is hijacking since this is about decision making. So I'm adding this and if it's a problem can move this to the iheat section:"the heater is fundamentally different from the RBT design. The air passes through the heater mesh in the RBT design. The air passes between the coils in the iHeat design, similar to the Nomad heater. The ss foil lining between the coil and the wood is another feature that sets the iHeat apart from the other 510 units. The glass insert of the splinter doesn't stop the coil radiant heat energy from reaching the wood body like the ss foil does. Since the air intake is high in the splinter body, the air must pass over hot wood before reaching the coil." I'd love to know what your experience would be if you tried the iheat.

This is exactly what Alan pm'd me verbatim in reply to my above post here, with the addition of: "The iHeat is faster than any other dry herb vaporizer from a cold start."

The ss foil lining between the coil and the wood is another feature that sets the iHeat apart from the other 510 units.

Yes, I read about this last addition which didn't exist at the time of my comparison.

I'd love to know what your experience would be if you tried the iheat.

Well, It's been on my Spoiler list as desiring to experience once.

Maybe there's someone near you for a trial. It won't be just once if you do try it. I think people who have trouble with it - or the splinter -are making it all too complicated.

as much as i like my splinter and other Vapes, i guess the Mighty could be a good Vape for you and it is sort of a good starting Point....

Good Vapor, relatively big bowl, easy to use, NO leraning curve.
Good battery life.
Easy to buy, dosing Caps and a full range of spare Parts / additions...

and after you are familiar with this one, you can look into more special offers.

Ah yes the iheat, completely forgot about that one. Holds a solid amount I assume?

Fierce, Splinter Z, Firewood 5, Ghost MV-1. All will give you great effects.
I still need to do some research on the firewood to check out the bowl size as well as if dosing caps are offered. Unfortunately the dosing caps on the ghost are a bit too small for my liking

This is a large reason I find the Fierce appealing. All in one piece, easy to conceal, durable, simple, etc. I love the idea of loading up a bunch of dosing caps and just being done. Also found a really nice bubbler stem addition for it :brow:

I’m sorry to hear about the health issues and I hope the best for you in that regard.

Appreciate it. This will perhaps be something I consider in the future but as of now the convenience and simplicity of a battery powered vape is what I'm after. Also feel like it'd be a bit weird/standout-ish to use a device like that in public if I wanted to take it on a walk or something

I like the suggestion, however I'm near certain the price at which I'm able to acquire herb on a per gram/cbd basis is likely exponentially cheaper than the cartridge route

If I were to decide to get something that isn't portable I'd probably just go all out and get one of the powerhouse desktops, but yes I definitely need to do a bit more digging on the iheat

I've spent quite a lot of time investigating the mighty. Ultimately what killed it for me was the maintenance hassle. Also the fact that at this point it in time I feel it's a bit dated. No removable battery, takes some time to heat up, seems like more of a convection/conduction hybrid vs pure convection, extraction seems good but at the cost of efficiency, etc.

My biggest priorities in all of this still remain the bowl size/session duration as well as the dosing caps option, preferably well sized dosing caps like with the Fierce. I'm a bit different than most in that I am willing to make some rather substantial sacrifices if it means extending session duration. Dosing caps have progressively inched their way up my priority rankings the more I conceptualize their convenience and ease of use in different scenarios

From what I understand dosing caps don't look to be an option with the Splinter Z unless it is custom and can accommodate capsule stems? And even in this scenario, we're talking small dosing caps correct? Like fury2 size?

Also, what are your guys' thoughts on the Boundless Tera? I've heard mixed things. Seems to have better extraction than the Fierce but supposedly the vapor can be harsh despite operating at the same temperature. Tera thread doesn't seem all too active on here either

Appreciate the contributions everyone has made thus far. Really helps speed up the process

all good points and i dont want to really talk you into buying a Mighty, it is not even my prefered Vape right now but want to reply:
  • maintenance hassle: Not really, cooling unit is easy to clean and as a power user it is easy to buy a second one and rotate between them
  • Dated: somewhat right and price still high but also Mighty still the king of his class...
  • Battery: Thats really a shame - a least there is pass through charging and you can have S&B change the batteries. Mine hold up quite well
  • convection / conduction: right but that makes it so easy and foolproof to use right from the start
  • efficiency: Mighty is definetly not the King of effiency, more King of effects
  • Dosing Caps: S&B made them popular. They are very affordable and there are even capsule caddies and a tray to fill something like 24 at once... if dosing capsules are really high onyour priorities look into it...

@Summer the iHeat does heat faster than the Splinter Z. I like the fact that the iHeat has no glass in it to break or separate from the wood.

Earlier today I stumbled on this Review from Troy of 420VapeZone.com

I would suggest you also look at the Tubo Evic. There is a large joint if you want to pack more than a "top hat" basket screen. If you want a 510 threaded device to go on an atomizer there is also the TUBOx.

I do think the fierce is a great start given your interests. I have not tried it nor the boundless but I definitely preferred the fury over the boundless vapes I had and ended up getting rid of those . If you consider the iheat, I’d Recommend contacting Alan directly. He is able to personalize to meet your needs. Specifically if he knows you want a large bowl, I think he can put one together for you. I don’t know about caps but it’s worth checking out. The tubo which someone recommended does have capsule options: I have a wood stem from them that uses capsules and that works with my iheat and splinter as well as with the tubo.

The Boundless Tera excels if you use it through water, but isn't a top choice dry since most find the vapor hot & harsh if I recall when I followed the thread.

420vapezone loves the Tera through water because it's such a hard hitter. (And many of us know the immense hard hits Troy is famous for.) And even Boundless only uses it through water in their weekly IG streams.
