Since moving from combustion to vaping I have gained a few kilos which have been piling on slowly but surely. I do believe part of the culprit been ‘the munchies’.

I have always had it while combusting but since vaping the munchies effect has grown to some scary proportions…

I call it the popcorn effect or should it be the Pringles effect “ Once you pop you can’t stop!”

Is anyone in the same predicament?

I have tried to reduce it by munching on a bag of cornflakes, carrots, rice cakes, well anything slightly healthier than a bag a crisps or sweets but find it extremely tough.

Chewing gums kind of work but I need to eat lots in order to keep the flavor going and the downside is that your teeth and jaw hurt after a while. :cuss:

    So this is my question:

What do you do to combat that Munchies effect?

I had the opposite effect.... I lost a ton of weight since medicating MMJ style. Something about it causing different processing of carbs or such... I read somewhere once....

Anyhow, if you want to combat munchies, keep yourself hydrated. It's a trick for regular dieting to drink a full glass of water immediately before dinner..... less space for calories = less weight gain...

I've been slowly gaining weight for ten years since I started using mmj. The time I was losing it again was when I just decided I would stop eating while hi. Sounds weird that I can have that control when hi, but I can if I think about it.

Rather than not eating, I'd rather just exercise more to balance it out haha

I lost 60 lbs. after starting MMJ a little over a year ago. For a long time I'd simply ignore the 'munchies' and found it easy to do, I ate much less than I normally did. A few months ago I tried some edibles that hit me hard and gave me 'super munchies' - it was too early to go to bed so I gave in and ate something. Since then I've found it hard to ignore the munchies - I have a significant amount of weight to lose so I'm going to start medicating later then going straight to bed, which is how I started, I found that by the time the munchies would have kicked in I'm asleep. I just have to 'reprogram' myself to not eat while medicated.

I find eating a small portion of a healthy food will kill the munchies and give my body the nutrition it is asking for.

    I am like @DDave
I eat a lot of munchies and never seem to gain weight.
In fact i have actually lost some weight since vaping.

I usually like to eat dinner before vaping so that i am full and don't feel like eating.
What also works is keeping yourself busy, find something to do that takes all your concentration and you forget about the munchies, at least i do.
Going to the gym is also pretty cool after vaping some serious Sativa!

more herb, but we know that cycle lol

best thing ive noticed to avoid/reduce munchies is to get myself involved in a task (at least an hour or two) that does not involve my ass holding my weight prior to heating up. once i sit i am brick and the kitchen talks.

I only vape at night. I too gained about 20 lbs due to after vaping munchies. So over the past 3 months, I lost that 20 lbs. How did I do that? I did that by drinking alcohol.

Let me explain. I never drank before............ever. Never my thing. Oh, I'd have a glass of wine with dinner once or twice a month, but that was it.

So I was having a real problem in getting my HDL's up. I tried everything..........nothing worked. Then I read that having some alcohol every day (no more than two one and half ounce drinks a day for men) could help to raise my HDL's, so I went out and got a bottle of a nice single malt scotch and proceeded not to drink two drinks a day, but just one...............every night after my vaping sessions.

    Results:
Within 2 months, my HDL's went up 2 points.
My blood suger levels improved to be even better than they were before and they were already good.

But here's what's on topic. I nurse that drink for about an hour and a half. Teeny tiny sips, just enough to coat my tongue. For me, by doing this, the scotch totally kills my appetite. My taste buds are totally satiated by the scotch, ergo......................no munchies. The trick though is to go to bed BEFORE the munchies begin to appear. If I stay up a bit too long though, a few strawberries or blackberries is all it takes to keep those munchies at bay.

So............if you don't have any liver disease going on, and if you don't have any alcoholism going on either with yourself or immediate family, I think this is worth a shot. It sure as hell has worked for me.

Of course, if you vape throughout the day, all bets are off.

Interesting that people get different results from vaping. I used to get major munchie attacks during the many years I smoked but vaping just doesn't make me hungry like smoking does. In fact it suppresses my appetite for an hour or two and then sometimes I will get a mild case of munchies so will eat something but even then it's not as powerful a stimulation that smoking gave me.
However my wife raids the refrigerator about five minutes after a session and experiences a major appetite event.
So many variables between peoples metabolism.

Thank you all for the tips!!

It is indeed interesting to see how everyone's feelings differ from one another.

I have already tried many approaches named above but to no avail.

I am surprised at the comments about “going to bed before the munchies kicked in”, the reason is, since starting vaping, I simply never feel like going to bed after medicating. :buzz:

The good old combusting used to send me on a express train to the bedroom but vaping has the entire opposite effect even with a pure Indica. Whatever strain it is, it simply sends me buzzing and looking for excuses not to go to bed in order to indulge in some more, I guess it’s the good old addiction smiling down/up at me.

Healthy munchies. Apples with peanut butter, bananas, smoothies, etc. If you get hungry may as well eat healthy!

I may be wrong but I think part of it has to do with blood glucose levels - if your blood glucose level is low you're going to feel hungry. I am type 2 and was quite surprised when I noticed that MMJ lowers my blood glucose, so much so that I stopped taking my strongest diabetes type 2 medicine because when used with MMJ my glucose would go too low (my type 2 is too high). MMJ really helped me get my diabetes under control, and hopefully I'll be able to get off my remaining med after I finish losing the weight I need to. If it indeed lowers blood glucose for others, that would very much make sense why people get the munchies...

Different strains, types, and temps used for vaporizing all make a difference, too.

I rarely even think of eating after hitting a heavy indica.

Interesting how different strains really affect people differently - the only times I get the munchies are with heavy indicas...

Scientists have finally begun to understand why smoking pot leads to so many late night trips to Taco Bell.

The main culprit for the munchies is a brain pathway known as the endogenous cannabinoid system, said Harriet de Wit, a psychiatry professor at the University of Chicago. This system, which involves naturally occurring brain chemicals that resemble , affects both the body's stress levels and the desire for tasty food, she told Life's Little Mysteries.

I think we already knew that there was some brain chemicals going on that allowed TCH to trigger the munchie, reflex, eh? But what's kinda neat is that they found the pathway. I think these kinds of studies have just barely scratched the surface. Makes it all a bit exciting, eh?
