    Hello all,
i did try a search and did not getting any results so sorry if this has been asked already. is there an actual store where i can walk in and buy 99% iso?? i go to Rite-aid, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart and i can find 91% but i can't find 99% except on the internet. i want to try and make some QWISO and all the guides say to use 99% ISO that was chilled in the freezer. but where can you buy this stuff???

You 'can' use 91% for qwiso in a pinch, but it just takes longer to purge because of the water content. Don't use branded rubbing alcohol as most contain an additive to prevent skin drying.

Have you tried going to the pharmacy counter and asking for 99% ? Most places around me keep it behind counter for some reason & I just tell them its of wound cleaning of my pets/livestock if they ask.

i guess i will just have to ask and see... i usually just go and look, but if it's possible that it may be behind the counter i will ask. thanks

i also have a small amount of Everclear at my house (Everclear is not sold in NY, but i live very close to NJ where it is sold) and i hear that can be used as well. any opinions on which is better in a pinch?? 91% ISO or Everclear??

The only place I've seen it in the open (in Ottawa, Canaduh area here), is at Lablaws & IGA.

Good luck in the hunt, but as I said... although 99% is 'preferred', 91% will do. The only reason preferred 99% is used is to 'quick wash' (15-20 second lite aggitation max), where 91% 'may' require 30 seconds or a bit more to strip your trichs, and the water content 'may' pull a bit of the plant matter that you don't want off as well (very minimal if you QUICK wash it IMO)

I too have been playing around with everclear and iso. i found that iso left a bitter aftertaste in the oil and everclear didn't. but i feel that the cold iso picks up the goodies better/faster than the cold everclear. a third wash with everclear still produced something whereas a third wash of iso doesn't.

NY liquor stores are allowed to sell 190 everclear now. The law changed a few years ago. It can be hard to find tho. I usually ask my local store to get it for me as needed... I say it's for limoncello.

    Haven't seen 99% iso tho...

91% ISO is only 9% water, 99% being 1%. The water is what takes longer to evaporate. I have had luck finding 99% and 100% pure ISO alcohol at a local electronics store called Fry's Electronics. Figures, ISO alcohol is a preferred cleaning solvent as it evaporates completely. Costs around $8-10 for a very big container, probably 2-3x bigger than the large bottles of 91% I buy.

The only supermarket chain I know that sells 99% iso is Safeway / Vons
It is usually more expensiv than the 70% by a dollar or so.

Here in NorCal no stores carry 99% iso. No Safeway, no electronics stores. I've checked them all. We don't have a Fry's but there is one in Motown I think. I'll check next time I'm in that area.

I'm surprised, SDM is expensive. Walmart has ISO for cheaper.

thank you... it seems the "haz mat" rate goes into effect when you buy larger sizes (i was looking at the gallon size). maybe i am better off getting a small bottle the first time anyways since i have never made qwiso before. thanks for the help

I just got 2 32 oz. bottles of 99% iso in the mail yesterday that I bought off of Amazon. They were about $8 ea. IIRC. With shipping it was about $20 for 64 ounces.

Only chain I've seen it at is safeway, which sold it in pints ($3-4 each). There's also a local hardware store that sells it by the gallon (~$30). You can also extract the additional water with anhydrous (dehydrated) epsom salt. I've never done it, so you'd have to look up the exact procedure, but basically you dry out epsom salt in the oven, pour in the alcohol bottle, shake then strain.

Denatured alcohol (wood alcohol) that you find in most home improvement stores is as close to 99% that you can get in a brick and mortar. Some brands have dyes/additives so beware of this, but denatured has worked well in the past for me (as well as others)
