well, only kind of. my question wasn't if kief is overall worth it, I specifically wondered if people think vaping it is advisable/feasible...

I made a hasty attempt at a moon rock, I hadn't heard of such a thing until it was mentioned in this thread.

Not my finest output as far as process goes, I need to find a better way of incorporating the oil into the bud without wasting so much, but holy diver this blasted me last night! I stuffed the whole bud into the basket using @DDave's mod, got about 6 realllllly good pulls before it got a bit too blackened, and enjoyed :)

I'd just assume go straight to rosin and get the inactives and plant matter out. If you'd have asked me 5 years ago I'd have said hell yes!

Cool! I saw a youboob vid that was tweezers holding the bud and a small dabbing tool putting on oil.

I have a bit of oil in a couple of tubes, will give it a shot and get pix if it turns out :)

Evil twin says: I am medically legal but a lot of my instincts are from years of non sanctioned use in a variety of locals. Back in the day? Absolutely.

I did it to generate an emergency reserve. I knew basic extraction methods back when most did not. For many years my emergency back up stash was powder taken from before an alcohol extraction mixed back in with the result. Before that my back up was simply Keif from a 3 screen grinder.

Now a days? I still grind and collect kerf but it is from habit at this point.

Hey @Simplicius, I remember seeing your post before these two threads were merged (side note: I finally learned how to properly link someone's username. Yay!!! http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/a-power-users-guide-to-following-fc.11653/#post-507682; thanks @Magic9!). Now onto the topic at hand. Is Kief Worth it ?

I think this subject can be tackled from a few different angles. Here we go:

    1) For our friends that still combust, I would say yes. Whether you smoke j's, blunts :puke:, out of a bowl or a bong, you need to break up/grind your buds in order to do so and in the process end up pulverizing the trichomes. Here I would say it is not only worth it, but highly advisable.

    2) For the people who vape, but whose particular vaporizer(s) requires them to break up/grind their buds in order to get the best performance out their vaporizers(s), my thoughts would be similar to example #1.

    3) For the people who vape, but whose particular vaporizer(s) DOES/DO NOT require them to break up/grind their buds, I would say no. Kief is not worth it. Here, the integrity of the trichomes are kept intact and separating them would seem counter intuitive.

Now I would think there are a few exceptions to these examples (as there always is in life):

    1) Some people just don't want to fuck with it. Whether they smoke or vape, you just wanna get the shit broken up, into your lungs AFAP, and enjoy it w/out an extra step involved. I can respect that.

    2) For people who live in a MMJ/RMJ area and/or have a readily available source of high quality concentrates, kief probably isn't worth it. The inverse of that though, were people DON'T have access to concentrates or at least high quality concentrates (butane poop soup anyone :puke:), I would think kief is totally worth it.

    3) Some people just don't dig the wax/shatter type of concentrates or their high, but would still like the extra kick that kief affords them from time to time. For these people, kief is so totally fucking worth it.

As far as collecting kief, and to which method is best, that's a different subject (and a personal one to). But if someone is trying to collect as much kief as they can and have it be as high quality as it can (tan vs. green kief), I would think a quality kief box or collector would be the way go versus a grinder. Just my :2c:.

    :peace: everyone.

I guess the argument is the MATH?
    KIEF SCREENS are very LAME!

3 piece or 2 piece grinders (no screen - keep the trichomes on your FLOWERS)

Living in the dark ages (uk), I can't wander into a shop and buy from a bewildering selection of concentrates.....

    I get what I make.....

So I would like my kief slightly separate from my flower, then I can turn it to concentrate of some sort....

And I do not notice the loss of glandular heads, they accumulate unmissed....

Its just another little bit of variety, in market with no variety here...

Ya back when buying a variety of products wasn't a reality kief was king.

Nowadays tho even tho I have access to the best rosin, the best CO2 pullnsnap the best bud and all that due to Seattle legalizing and advancements in tek, I had lost hope in kief. hadn't really used it in a long time until I tried to clean my MFLB after grinder and realized it was some of the highest quality kief I'd ever seen, extremely blonde. holy shit does that stuff vape nice. Flavor is like no concentrate and the kick and the effects are like nothing else. I think once you get past the point of trying to get as medicated as possible, variety becomes king, and I gotta say I love my kief bowls. That being said I only collect a bowls worth about every couple weeks, but I don't grind much actual flower anymore and the kief is of the utmost quality, and the rest just falls into the bowl so none lost haha.

I think the ultimate goal, whether you separate the kief from the flower or not is to keep all of it intact. things like crushing up the bud real bad, rubbing it all over your hands or plastic bags or using quarters in grinders(that last one not as much) all damage the kief to some extent and I think that's really when it's a bummer. but Ya to each his own haha

Kief is amazing. I've been using a 4 piece grinder with a screen that is supposedly meant for weed trichs. At least that's what I remember it advertising. And I've been using it over a year. It's the cheapo variety made of zinc alloy but I love it.

Can't recommend enough the kingtop grinder from amazon. I run very little bud through it and I have a nice thin layer of kief. I forget about it for a while and I have a gang of kief! It's pretty dry right now though. I've been using wax for the last week almost exclusively since I ran out of bud and kief.

And I know that the kief is being taken away from the flower you are vaping. So it's not like it magically appears. But my buds still do it for me despite losing all that kief so I'm pleased with the second almost magically appearing (forget and remember) stash.

I don't intentionally try to seperate trichrome from the plant but it happens as a result of grinding. I mostly use a New Vape 2-piece fine grinder and trichromes are going to get knocked off and loosened.

I then generally dry the ground herb for a bit in a 'pollen box' what has a fine screen bottom to one section with a bit of glass underneath to capture the pollen. What pollen I get is simply a by product of grinding, drying, and some handling.

I do like to capture this pollen in a way that preserves it (and the box does pretty good) and then add it back into loads...particularly herb/pollen/herb sandwiches in my VapCap and Enano.

I do find that the amount of trichromes I get knocked off and lose varies a good bit with strain. E.g. the Blue Dream sheds them quite a bit while the Fire OG does not, both at about the same moisture level to start. At least it certainly seems that way to me but I don't have access to enough different strains to validate this observation.

This my story and I'm sticking to it. :-)

I used this grinder for a while before my gr8tr...

I noticed the coating flaking off so stopped using it...
It does harvest kief very efficiently though...

Just keep an eye on it...
I think I got 6 months from it before the coating issue, so still worth the money i suppose....

I'm not the biggest fan of grinders (fuckin' ocd), so anytime I want to enjoy some Kiefer Sutherland I throw some buds in a mason jar, cover the top tightly w/ pantyhose & screw the lid over that. Put it in the freezer for half an hour upside down, then pull it out & shake the shit out of it. Unscrew the top & there should be some wonderful goodies in the lid. The best thing about kief to me ? A flower, kief, dab (or reclaim) sandwich, lol. We have lift off !!! :ko:

@kellya86 I guess we look at it differently?

I like my 2 piece grinders because I want to enjoy the COLA I'm experiencing. Yes it's true KIEF is plentiful in CALIFORNIA.
Weak WEED dump kief on it. (fix it!)

3 piece grinders I dream of owning one day? (SANTA CRUZ makes one)

I've been harvesting it in general lately a little more actively. for a little while after getting the medical card I was even using separate sativa, hybrid, indica grinders to keep the kief of similarish kinds together so i'd at least have sativa kief or indica kief or whatever instead of just a mix of everything. But, I decided I'm not accumulating it fast enough for that to really be worth it. I'd rather press it into hash quickly if it does accumulate.

My main caveat is strains that produce weaker vapor to begin with, those i make sure not to shake the grinder or anything to not lose any more than the minimum that naturally falls thru the screen. But on the otherhand, strains that produce great vapor regardless I might try and shake the grinder more / hit it on my palm to get a little more kief to fall thru (still no green).

My grinder always gets tipped over and tossed around a lot so the keif would end up all over the place and clog up the threads and screen so like others I just took out the screen section.

Isolated kief is a wonderful thing.

I can see the validity of keeping all parts of the bud together, but kief properly utilized can be a good tool.

I tend to chase body and medical effects, and find that kief gives more reliable and intense results, which is not suprising since cannabinoid levels are concentrated, but of course not like literal concentrates. I also find a kief mental high to be "cleaner", which I prefer most of the time.

I'm trying to move from a "catch all" approach (I've run about 100+ named strains thru a Santa Cruz, so my kief stash is a big mix), to a more type specific (indica, CBD, etc) or even strain specific approach. Named strain kief goes for 25-30 a gram here in the PNW.

Or just remove the screens and use the materials with kief intact

I've seen it go for as low as ten a gram here in the dispensaries in So Cal. Lots of varieties depending on the shop. But I haven't bought some in a while.

I have a shorthand rule for cannabis concentrates. If it's gold, it's good. Hash, Wax, Kief. I've seen golden bubble hash regarded as the holy grail, waxes I've experienced it first hand (the blondes have more of a kick) and kief I have seen green kief, I believe it was plant matter and slightly blonde tinged kief which was nice.

It's like saying, I want this extra 1% so much right now right away even though it won't do anything. Instead of letting it fall, not even noticing it's gone when experiencing the high, and then having a stash for later.

Good herb has trichs for days. But I haven't vaped flower in a bit. Just my torch and banger.
