Does anyone have any recommendations for a small, highly portable way to create rosin that's sub-$100? Bonus points if it's an all-in-one unit (I don't have to have a separate vise or thingamajig in order to use it).

I'm looking at this as a cool, safer (i.e. no solvents) way to get more into concentrates that I can easily do at home, and would love to get something that I can try it out and experiment with to see if I'd like to invest more.

Would the Slug .33 work well for this? It's not clear from the website how that's used (note to @Nattybushdoctor, a tutorial video or graphic of some sort showing the entire process would be nice)

I watched a few videos about this model, and it looks like the results are both extremely minimal and very thick. I was looking for something that would produce rosin that would wick up in some sort of 510 cartridge. Would this be able to produce that? Would any rosin wick, or is it too thick?

Thanks. I checked a few out, and they illuminated the entire process. This looks like an awesome way to go — great production, minimal tooling or setup, and it looks like the resulting concentrate is liquidy enough to wick in a cartridge.

The butane requirement is the only stickler for me. Maybe I'll wait for the electric ones to come out over the summer.

@Nattybushdoctor, you should include a page with those videos on the site.

Unfortunately NO PRESS will give you a specific type of rosin. That depends Entirely on the Cultivar. Once you find the pressing setup you want, then you must find that cultivar that will give you the Rosin you are desiring. PEACE!
Is it the cost of the butane or the method that is the stickler?

No one has any other options than a T Rex or a Slug.33?

Rosin is not ideal for 510 carts at all. It's a great way to safely get into extracts, but not great for prefilled cartridges.

    How come they're not ideal?

Too many impurities like BHO. Lets say the rosin is 70% total cannabinoids, 15% terpenes, you still have 15% of something. These carts dont do well with that other 15% so it eventually clogs them up and kills them.

I know what you mean, but that still just doesn't sound right to me  Just makes it sound like residual solvent or something. I'm assuming those impurities you are referring to are plant matter, waxes, etc?

I tried various ways to get BHO and Rosin to wick but as stated it does not work well for very long. I use a Hercules when I don’t want or can’t dab. That works great with all sorts of concentrate.

But lest we forget, plant waxes in rosin also have terpenes. It's hard to seperate terps from wax. So while you can winterize rosin, (with solvents of course) it's no longer a flavor machine. At that point you might as well use full solvent extracts.

I think most of the "problem" peeps have with rosin plant waxes are due to rosin plugging up pen vapes. I have that problem myself, so I just use small amounts and clean frequently when i use my pen. But really to properly enjoy rosin I much prefer my dnail sic dish or in a mighty. So more than a "problem" with rosin, I think it's more an vape equipment mismatch. Of course ymmv

 Yes! Exactly, there is some benefit to those waxes, and terpenes are essential! My personal belief is that the conduction dabs cause the problems whereas vaping convection style is all good, lower temps and that shit gets trapped in cotton or mesh.

For me it's the supreme v3....absurdly tasty quality dabs at vape temps, but I feel that radiant heat helps lots. I recently tried the mighty with rosin and could barely get anything more than a few wisps. I personally don't feel that max temp on the Mighty is sufficient, but the FF2 500f concentrate mode apparently shines for convection dabbing.

Recently also experienced convection dabbing with the glass 7th floor Elev8tr and that was pretty :mmmm: But also too wasteful for my wallet as those ceramic pads are quite porous (like S&B mesh pads).

Plant fats and lipids don't contain terpenes. Terpenes are separate constituents. You may be confusing the tendency of a heat assisted pressure extrusion to force terpenes into an emulsion with plant fats; however, that is not how the terpenes are synthesized by the cannabis plant. The terpenes are created inside the oil secreting trichome gland, while lipids and fats are present in the outer membrane of the trichome and on the surface of vegetative greenery (leaves, buds, etc). When glands are expressed without pressure to force the oils out there isn't nearly as much wax and lipid content compared to using pressure to push everything together. Even amongst pressure extrusions, the higher the melt factor bubble hash you squish, generally the lower the fat/wax content; with flower rosin coming in dead last and having the most contaminant, fat, wax, etc since it was all forced through plant material under pressure.

We use our old ass mighty with great effects. It isn't perfect for concentrates by any means. But it does vape concentrates and it does taste really nice. But it needs to be cleaned frequently due to it's low top end on heat. And it's wasteful for concentrates, compared to nails.

The dnail sic dish is way better for concentrates, than my mighty, the mighty is, better than my dynavap, and the dynavap is better ( imho) than my pen vape.

But again imho, there is a need for a top notch concentrate portable. I'm sure somewhere, someone, probably in a garage is inventing one now.

If you like convection vaping, have you tried using a concentrate pad in a Firefly? Absolutely insane flavor, fun to watch my HTE sauce vape away and turn the THCa crystals from amber to clear until they finally get hot enough to vaporize, packs a serious punch. Needs to be cleaned insanely frequently though.

Wow really? I've seen some super dense extract smoke show videos with the vapcap, but not the Mighty. But perhaps you're all about that flavour!

What @SamuraiSam said! Apparently it's the BEST for extracts on the go if you're into quality and taste. Shitty airflow is the downside. I have one on its way.

@SamuraiSam are there not any benefits to the waxes and parafins or is it like plant matter and just compost? Thanks so much for your detailed explanation.... lots of learning as i'm noob to all of this!

There are dense clouds vaping rosin in our mighty, for sure. Not like a nail at 700 degrees, but yes clouds. But like I said its not efficient. In it we use a large dab, bigger than I would dab in a nail. When it's done vaping the wire pad still holds a good deal of rosin that needs to be cleaned. So not ideal, but it maintains flavor right to the end, and the effects are definitely noticeable, no denying the buzz, and it is portable, but not ideal.

I have not tried a firefly yet, havn't even seen one so far. But from what I've read I believe your assessment. But I still think there is room for improvement in a concentrate portable. Ideally it would be a pen that maintains flavor throughout, and cleans easy. IOW nail preformance in a pen. As fast as vapes are evolving I don't think it will be a long wait.

Mods, could you merge my posts. I'm not used to posting sober, lol.

a manual press at 415 £ , I saw the exact same unit on DHGate at 220 $

But I do understand that transportation is a cost (when it comes to heavy stuff) so i guess what the european company that sold me the unit does, is they transport the presses up here and pretty much add a sticker to them and then resell at a markup to cover their expenses from shipping and to get a profit.

I guess what i should have done is gotten the PIDs and plates off DHGate and sourced the "heavy parts" locally.
