Herb Grinders

I've got a couple of Sharpstone 4-piece & a small 2-piece Piranha.

Read a lot of good things about Spacecace. Are they really all that much better?
I have a couple Sharp Stone 4 pc from back in the day and a space case. The mill work on the space case is nicer but the grind consistency is about the same.

One thing I really don't like about Space Case is their knurling. There's barely anything there, and it doesn't provide any kind of extra gripping surface for me. Maybe I only feel this way because I've lost a lot of feeling and dexterity in my hands, but it is a legitimate issue for me. (It's all braille to me.)

The knurling on my small 4-piece matte orange Santa Cruz Shredder is phenomenal. And yes, I do believe this is specifically because of the matte finish. To me, the knurling on all Santa Cruz Shredders is infinitely better than the knurling on Space Case, but the grip is even better on SCShredders with matte finish than Shredders with a shiny finish.

In fact, I also consider Diamond Grind's knurling considerably easier to grip than Space Case's knurling. (I haven't used any other grinder brands.)

After having to clean my S&B stock plastic grinder with iso, a tooth brush and a dab tool for stubborn caked on material on the side.. I've decided enough is enough and it's time for me to invest in a grinder that is just going to work smoothly and with much, much less upkeep.

In over an hour's time of brief internet research I came to the conclusion that the main two that people prefer are the Space Case and the Santa Cruz Shredder. From the web results i got it seems the space case is still prefered by a slight but decent margin. I've been reading about the products on their respective websites and my only dilemma is that I'm not sure If I should get the small or a medium sized 4 piece. I only vape once a day in the evenings with my Plenty Vape and usually between a .3 and .5.

Also there seems to be 2 different space case websites? One that says SpaceGrinders.com and another that says Spacecasegrinders.com. After looking at them it seems the official site is the latter? I would prefer to use amazon since I have amazon gift card points remaining but it looks like they are out of the 4 piece medium space case. I would really prefer Titanium if it improves smoothness and really makes a difference.

Also what exactly do they mean by medical grade? Sterile parts I would imagine? Are both of these Medical grade or is it only the SCS?

What size do you guys think I should go with and are there really any differences between how the SC and SCS perform? I just want super easy turning, something that is a whole lot easier when it comes to maintenance, and something that i'll never have to deal with the likes of this again:
tp9jHuI.jpg

In the meantime, I'm looking over both of these and trying to make a decision. I skimmed through as much of this thread as I can before asking but it's really hard for me to get any free time anymore.

Thanks in advance.

I would have to disagree with the general consensus that Space Case is better than SCS.
I value the FC assessment here, much more than any general web assessment.
Although both are top notch, I'd have to say the clear FC leader is.... the SCS shredder family.

IMO, the best SCS (for my needs and wants) is the small 3 piece SCS. It's about 2.1" diameter
and I'd call it a medium. Great build quality, turns like it's on roller bearing, nice fluffy shred
(grind) that I prefer. Screws together/apart like it's on super smooth threads.

I have no need or want for a 4 piece with kief collector--i want all the goodies included now.
I find 3 piece much better than 2 piece for loading: instead of herb sitting between sharp teeth,
it is sitting a second chamber where it's super easy to get just the exact amount you want.

Thank you for the post.. I'm now swaying towards SCS more but regardless.. Online the SC is still prefered from the results i got from my searches. Nearly 7 out of 9 reviews all favored the space case as their number 1 choice with SCS as second. Of course this is only based off what I googled..I think It was "Best Grinder for MJ".. or something along those lines. Pretty specific eh?

Thanks for the input on the size. I'm swaying towards a small if it's really 2.1 in diameter.. I think I might be able to deal with that. I'm also contemplating 3 piece by a small margin but i hear that keif payoff might be worth it in the end? I'm not sure.

Also, does the SCS use an O ring?

Yes, the top piece, laying on wood, has o-ring. Teflon or plastic?
It turns like on bearings.

Bear in mind that a search for "Best grinder for MJ" will get rated by general public = 95 % are
combusters, not vapers.
FC member rating is 10X more valuable to me :) IMO

Yeah the one in the pic. I would imagine it's teflon I would be surprised if It wasn't since this is what SC uses in their O rings.

I get it you value FC.. I do as well. Especially now that I'm not only trying to completely convert to vaporization (although I do cheat every now and then lol), but because of the intelligent conversations and the wealth of information that goes on here. I've read them too man!:)

Nevertheless I prefer to get everyone's take and that includes the general public and not a single community consensus either. But either way choosing the best grinder for me is priority here. Not my google search result impression.

Anyhow I'm still trying to decide and I'm about 80/20% leaning towards the SCS right now. Thanks for the input.

You'll be getting the SCS. No other grinder can overcome those odds. Been there. There's no coming back (especially because Space Case was already in the lead at one point).

EDIT: Oh, and today only, EZVAPES is offering free shipping with every order, in addition to 15% off all orders (using the summer code at the top of the page). http://ezvaporizers.com.

Hey thanks for that. I'm looking at the site as we speak but I'm confused on a few things.

1. It seems like they got their sizes mixed up and are calling the small the medium over here?
http://ezvaporizers.com/grinders/santa-cruz-4-piece-aluminum-grinder-small/prod_486.html#ordernow
The official website states the small is 2.1 inch in diameter which Ez Vapes calls the medium above. Just a typo? As you probably know SCS only comes in mini, small and large. Must be a typo.

2. It appears as if these are legit and it seems as if I'd be saving almost 12 bucks in addition to the 15% off so I going to get it here thank you.

My only concern is since I won't be buying these from SCS themselves, will they still honor the lifetime warranty?

Thanks bro you saved shipping, 12 bucks and an additional 15% off. I didn't do the math but I'll be saving well over $20 with the shipping. Thank you man!

Edit: NM I spoke to them and they said they consider the Small 4 piece a Medium by their standards. Apparently they consider anything over 50mm in diameter a medium or so they say!

Just having a hard time deciding on the glossy or matt finish and whether I really want a 4 or a 3 piece. Swaying more towards that 4 piece though.

SpaceCase vs SantaCruz is like Apple vs PC there is no right answer. A lot of people on this site like SCS more. I have used both extensively and prefer space case slightly for certain reasons. Most people I see in my area swear by space case. Now compton grinders seems to be the new dog that is on par with these two heavyweights. You won't be disappointed with either one.

For a small size 4 piece I like the Santa Cruz

For a larger size I like the Medium space case

I locked up both my space case and SCS 4 pieces with some super dense dank in the last few days.
Next week I go back in hospital for more surgery/treatment so I have been stocking up on the best heavy indicas I can find for when I get out.
I just picked up a really nice Ryot kief box that I'm going to be trying out too that I'm stoked on.

I might order a small 2-piece SCS sometime today myself. Comes out to like $22 total, I think.
Nice dude.. I still haven't ordered mine yet.. personal obligations came up! Anyhow the more I think about it I'm swaying more towards the 3 piece. I read stories of the screen clogging up and I've heard that if you're just vaping you really don't want to separate the kief.

I have to admit while I do like the Vape High, It's not the same as combusting. Wouldn't it be in my best interest to include all the potency I can get? I also heard that to get a fine grind with the 4 piece that you need to turn it upside down? Wouldn't that make the keif fall to the top of the chamber and get dislodged from the screen?

Anyhow I would just love to get a little feedback on this before ordering.. I need to make a decision within the hour before the old lady gets back!

I'm trying to see if there's a 3rd way, I've just received from Massdrop my 4 pieces Cali Crusher Homegrown or let's say "4p. CCH" for short and to add another grinder acronym with "C"s. :D
Unfortunately it got scratches inside the bottom part and a couple of small chipping too... so I've written to MD to see how they want to handle this. It doesn't prevent from using the grinder of course but you know...

Disclaimer: I've only owned 2 grinders before, a small 4 pieces aluminium one from Vapornation and before that a crappy wooden 2 pieces with pins that a flatmate gave me once, needless to say it broke the instant I put a hard bud in it.

What I can tell for now is that it appears well made to me and feels heavy, especially the lid.
I'm curious to see how differently these teeth grind depending on which way you turn but I'm not using it just yet.
The "quicklock" system seems convenient, no need to spin several turns to open or close it, you only need to turn the body of about 40°. Unfortunately you can't remove the 3rd part (where the herb falls) to make it a 3 pieces like I was hoping you could.

I have one problem with this grinder though (apart from the scratches and not being able to use it yet), I have to constantly tell myself not to buy a 3 pieces SCS to "compare" them. And not being able to pass it from 4 pieces to 3 doesn't help! :uhoh:

Edit: I know I can simply remove the screen but it's not the same. :D

I'm a huge fanboy of the SCS 3 piece.
SCS build quality
I have no need for kief---want it all now, so 2 or 3 piece
Nice storage area for what you don't use now
Prefer the rounded "corners" in the storage area.
Love the 2.1" size
I love the matte colors--gunmetal matte

Thanks for the tip. Just placed my order for a 2 piece small gun metal to go with my existing 3 piece gun metal. There was no option for matte or glossy, new tooth design or old. I guess I'll just wait and see what I get . I love my 3 piece so even if it's the old design in OK with it.

@Socks And Sandals I also decided not to order today (or necessarily anytime soon). Here's why:

You can almost always find a really good deal on the specific grinder you want if you just look in the right places and maybe wait a few days. Grinder prices change frequently. Between EZVAPES, EZGRINDERS, and Amazon, there's always a good deal to be found on just about anything you could want. And then occasionally, there is an even better deal.

I decided not to order this grinder today because I realize I can almost always get the same grinder from EZVAPES, via Amazon, for $21. There might only be one or two colors to choose from at that price, but it rotates, probably depending on how many grinders of each color are in stock at any given moment.

My point is, whatever grinder you want will almost certainly be for sale at a very good price somewhere whenever you want it in the future.

Whenever you decide you want to pull the trigger, just say something to me. I regularly look at the web sites I mentioned, just to see if there are any freaking spectacular deals on grinders. I do this even though I may never buy another grinder because I have pretty much nothing but time.

@Supdog The one grinder I noticed with a lot of matte color options was the small 4-piece.

I have not had the urge to even try another grinder since finding SCS, but am going to give Compton a try next time they have a good sale. Love the easy to clean/replace screen.

Can any Compton owners comment on the screen filter's fineness? I do like how SCS only lets the finest of sift through, I am just looking for an easily cleanable screen to keep up with pollen production. Clean screens let so much more good stuff through.

Yes I do remember you telling me how much you did prefer your 3 piece SCS. Now after reading further about it.. I'm thinking I don't need the kief catcher either. Like you said the design is concave which makes pouring and finger scooping much easier. Meanwhile the 4 piece doesn't have that concave compartment.. hence the need for that guitar pick tool for scraping. I was also concerned about turning a 4 piece upside down and having the kief fall off the screen.

When you hold the 3 piece upside down does any herb fall back into the grinding chamber through the holes? Would I be able to get the same fine grind or at least almost of what I could get in a 2 piece? My biggest draw about the 3 and 4 piece is the storage and to be honest even the 3 piece can be poured directly into a vape chamber.

When you hold it upside down the herb in the lower chamber DOES fall back into the grinding chamber.
I like this as if you want finer, shred it a second time.

@Ratchett / 3D Studios makes a sweet pour/funnel that is sized for the SCS 3 piece. I don't have one yet but will with my next order/soon. I'll report back on how it works

That's awesome my mind is made up now. I just hope months down the line I don't start having kief dreams.. nah I'm joking lol! It's funny I just read a forum post (can't remember what site) and the guy who posted said he only vapes now and said that he thought a Kief catcher is like "Paying Piper to Pay Paul" or something along those lines? Anyhow I get the analogy.

I wish i knew what percentage of potency is lost with each grind that is caught through that bottom screen that I wouldn't be vaping in that session? I would imagine it wouldn't even be worth mentioning but I've been surprised before. I understand we get it back (like taxes at the end of the year lol) but I think I just want it all at once like you do and not have to come back to it later. It's all the same thing really I dunno..
