Allow me digress about this, "thermo" means heat and "stat" means stable (KISS phylosophy)...

ThermoStat = Stabilized Temperature

Though i can think of a thermostatic system with no sensor at all, as a matter of fact!

Anyway we seem to refer to some common language (for example, thermal mass behaving as a low-pass filter within a closed loop system), whatever. So, briefly put i didn't think it was fair to compare the DaVinci to a "Rheostat" (and i still don't!!) - which by the way says absolutely nothing about what side i'm on.

You've confirmed what a photograph already proved: there's a sensor and it's there to implement thermostatic control, that's it.

well, I didn't have so much reason to want there to be no offgassing, except that it's a cool gadget and fits a niche. but I didn't pay anything for it(since I won it), and already had both a home and portable vaporizer when I received it.
I had read trough this thread and saw the reports of ofgassing, but I also saw people that had no trouble with it, so I fully charged it, and first put it on without loading anything for a good test.
after it was on for a while there was indeed a mystery vapor(not extremely much, also it was only visible with the lid closed)
during the 2nd or 3rd cycle it was greatly diminished, I think it was gone completely but it could've that there was some remaining, but if there was it was way less as at first.

I didn't notice any bad taste after that, but my sense of smell isn't that good and often I don't taste the weed I'm vaping at all. so a few days after I got it(and barely used it, since at home I have my UD) I went to the coffeeshop to give it a proper test, and none of the friends that tried it noticed a bad taste. on later occasions where others used it I also always got positive remarks(and the neutral 'it looks like a walkytalky')

so I'm confident using it, and it fits a perfect niche as portable that I can also easily pass to others without learning them a technique.

What color is the unit? ej2389's two units that were offgassing were white and gray. Mine's black with no offgassing whatsoever. If they came up with a fix, didn't update the stock, and the black is more popular, Karma might have colored versions without the fix that they're selling. I don't know, it's just a guess.

the one I got is black too. but there are things like that mentioned about certain colors elsewhere in this thread too, I think it's unlikely that it's really related to color.

Don't you see that as a problem? Knowingly selling offgassing units? Despicable if that's the case.

djonkoman: Just because you can't taste a toxin doesn't mean it isn't there. I admit I hit my davinci even after I saw the offgassing not going away because I wanted to believe that it would not be that harmful to me and go away. Well it didn't go away and I'm realizing how stupid it is to keep inhaling something that could be plastic fumes.

Can you name that "toxin"? Be kind of strange to find a toxic in a food grade silicone you'd think.....

Calm down I'm not saying it is for sure toxic. I'm freaked out by the possibility. I kind of got side tracked in my last post. The point of it was supposed to be that I didn't taste anything either, but I'm sure there was something there besides the herb.

Thanks for the concern, I'm plenty calm (I think) and plan to stay that way. I'm hoping everyone else does too?

We did go into 'what is out gassing' a lot a while back. Facts seem to help some folks, some just ignore them I guess.

OK go ahead and repeat it for me since I missed it. The definition I'm using for myself here is any gas that comes out of the empty unit if it has never been loaded. You can play semantics all you want but the fact is my units are doing something even davinci agrees they should not be doing.

It doesn't hurt to repeat something and be helpful, even if it is again and again, especially if you are going to take the time out to leave a response anyway... cant hurt to have that info repeated however many times... some one looking or not might have better chances of finding info they can use... i do appreciate what you contribute to this site, just had to say....

So what is the consensus on the whole off gassing problem? I ordered one the other day and found out about that problem only recently. My davinci has not arrived yet but I am worried to even consider the vape, I don't want burnt plastic going into my lungs......

If you want to be sure you don't get an offgassing product I would either look at something else or wait for davinci to give an official response that actually makes some kind of sense.

haha well looks like I am returning my davinci I just bought, sorry Karma but you can't own up to your mistakes... I am not wasting my time with a product that might harm my health. Any suggestions on another portable/stealthy vape? I was thinking the PAX or Inhalater XP

INH IMHO...In used it all day today at a car dealership even while talking to people. Nobody blinked.

Nobody has had any problems with burnt plastic. Nobody. Burning is something entirely different.

The rubber used is a polymer. A jumble of long molecules tangled up like a plate of spaghetti. A liquid. In the processing a catalyst is added to such stuff to 'cross link' the molecules to make a mat that's more or less solid (like that plate of spaghetti when it gets cold). After it sets up the catalyst has to go somewhere, it migrates out through the material (or you'd never smell or see it....), like the 'rubber smell' from new tennis shoes. Temperature and time (in some processes vacuum) speed this stuff along. This is called 'curing' in the trade. If it's 'food grade' care is made in the selection of the catalysts used for this reason.

So many of us found we could see 'mystery vapor' (as someone called it, it's no mystery really, we know what it is) from our new DVs with empty bowls. This gets less and less as the material near the surface migrates out, you need higher and higher temperatures to find it. Dropping down in temperature from 'full blast' basically stops it as you might guess.

Another factor comes into play as well. Condensed vapor ends up sealing the surface so the catalyst can't evaporate that way any more so migrate through the material and out the other way, away from the vapor path.

You noticed how the rubber smell left your Adidas over time? Same deal, only being as this is food grade there's really no health hazard.....like there is with the tennis shoes.

This 'toxic hazard' caused a big stir in the Puffit thread as well. Well intentioned folks got into "carcinogens" and all sorts of wild concerns.....IMO ended up scaring the women and horses as the saying goes.

Lots of good info on the web on the topic. NASA did some very useful and interesting studies on this topic a while back. IMO the risks are trivial compared to blazing for instance?

Dude you are misleading people. This shit isn't going away at all on my davinci's. So it is at least possible for this to be a permanent thing. Thanks davinci for curing your rubber in my lungs, really appreciate it. If you want to argue I didn't cycle enough, go ahead, but you need to tell me how many cycles I should put it through before expecting it to go away. The fact is you are wrong because davinci themselves told me the unit should not be giving off any gas at all. That's why they sent me a new one free of charge despite the fact it wasn't under warranty.

But really, it can't be healthy to inhale the fumes from the davinci that come off from an empty bowl... Also, I thought earlier you were saying how bad the Davinci is in some of your earlier posts. I might have read wrong

I beg you pardon, I am not misleading anyone. Quite the contrary I'm reporting my experiences and understandings. And I'm not alone. No, it's not possible for it to be permanent, if it's evaporating it's going away, it has to become less over time.

I'm not making any wild health claims about food safe stuff not being safe. I'd call that misleading myself.

So go back half a year or so and check out post 1062 where I describe getting mine. Note 1066 where Stu talks about rubber smells going away in 1071. Then check out my report of cooking the nasty vapor out of mine in post 1076 and make up your own mind.

Your life, your call. I tend to address health concerns the way I've been trained to. This is just not on the charts if you asked me.....which I think you did? It's probably not a health concern no matter what and it does go away. Or so lots of folks seem to believe.
