Black Leaf 'Steely Dan' SS Grinder

I ran across this looking at stainless steel grinders, it's the cheapest SS one I've seen by some way, especially for Europeans since it's from Germany.

https://blackleaf.de/shopware.php?sViewport=detail&sArticle=1390

The shop doesn't take cards unfortunately, I had to pay by bank transfer. I ordered and paid on Thursday, I received confirmation on Tuesday and the grinder was delivered today, Thursday again, pretty good considering the bank transfer took 2-4 days.

The grinder is available in 2 or 4 piece configurations, 39mm, 49mm,59mm diameters and either a velvet bag or a small zippered case.
It arrived very well packaged indeed along with a selection of stickers.

The case is semi-rigid and textured like carbon fibre, sturdy and well padded, with a logo on top and a Black Leaf logo on the padding inside the lid.

The grinder itself has a logo on the top which seems to be engraved somehow, and a machined finish. It feels nice and solid in the hand.
The top is held on by a magnet and has a roughly 1mm wider diameter for the top half of it's height which helps to lift it off easily.
The next section has a thin plastic 'slider' ring which seems fixed in place to reduce friction. The teeth are an elongated diamond shape with slight curves and the holes into the collection chamber are a regular size.

The next section requires 2.5 rotations to open, the threads seem precise and solid. The sides slope down to a mesh kief screen which does not appear to be replaceable.
The kief chamber also needs 2.5 rotations to open, it's nicely smooth and the edge is rounded where the base meets the walls.

There were some tiny metal shavings evident, so I cleaned the whole grinder with iso and swabs (no oil found, just a few bits of metal) then boiling water before letting it dry for testing.

The top went on easily and the reasonably sharp teeth sliced through the bud with ease although some bits were left in the top compartment.

The grind is an almost perfect joint grind, finely chopped and fluffy rather than powdered, this would have been awesome to roll with and is just right for big hits in my vapcap.

Well these are around for some time,i plan one getting the smallest/cheapest one :D at some point. There are two series (i think) one is classic black leaf, other is named Steely Dan :D (lol) ... The difference is in the packaging .Steely dan comes with a ziplock case and BL logo ones come with a velvet pouch.
Material: Stainless Steel
Color: silver
Print: Steely Dan, Black Leaf Logo
System: Diamond-cut Teeth
Supplies: Zip Bag
Warranty: Lifetime Guaranty
They got few sizes both 2 pieces and 4 piece.
Smallest one is 39mmx15mm (can be found for 20 euro if you dig around)

After a quick search i see that prices are varying a lot at different place. If you after one i suggest you dig around before buying one.

Hey @Abysmal Vapor, I saw the Steely Dan at VDNM and was always curious about it but actually didn't want to spent money on Grinders anymore after importing a Santa Cruz Shredder a while back.

I am really interested in a report once you had the chance to test your new Grinder. :wave:Was always interested in Stainless Steel Grinders but too cheap to get one. :D

If you get their 'matrix' model you even get the 'trapezeum' teath also known from Santa cruz ...

Should be a thread about it somewhere on here....

SS might be a nice one too of course

I have the black leaf version ! Dont waste your time with the smaller ones, get the two piece 59mm. It grind nicely,if i have anything to complain about is the stupid texture ,there are ring channels in the same direction rotation happens, and it makes grip a bit hard when your hands are sweaty. Checkout vapo-city.de they got 11% for newly registered. Got mine below 20 euro, worth every damn penny. It is damn heavy and looks like it is going to last a few lifetimes :). That other NV desined in austria grinder also looks sweet,it has fewer teeth and looks liek they have secured a better grip for grinding, but it is twice the price and i dont know if it is really worth it. Designed in Austria means made in China also :D..
@dimmusp
I should have posted a review when i got it but i forgot about. The teeth are razor sharp be careful not to cut your fingers. Just do a couple of rotations cause on the 4th things get a bit too fine for some vaporizers. 1 time it is still fluffy,2 times just right. Hope this helped somehow with your choice. The blackleaf version comes with a pouch the steely dan with a zip case. But the blackleaf is more forgiving on the logo. I highly recommend those guys. One of the best prices on vapes in the EU and service is high quality !(A friend snagged a plenty for 169 euro recently and this is the price all year around. )

Wow, thank you! Way better prices than directly from Black Leaf!

59mm 4-part stainless steel grinder:
- Vapo-City: €35.89 (https://www.vapo-city.de/navi.php?a=6213&lang=eng)
- Black Leaf: €54.50 (https://blackleaf.de/en/bl-stainless-steel-grinder-4-part)

59mm "Steely Dan" 4-part stainless steel grinder:
- Vapo-City: €49.99 (https://www.vapo-city.de/navi.php?a=5880&lang=eng)
- Black Leaf: €79 (https://blackleaf.de/en/bl-steely-dan-stainless-steel-grinder-4-part)

Are there any performance differences between the "Steely Dan" and non-"Steely Dan" versions? Or is it just the logo and case? According to the specs in the Black Leaf page, the non-Steely Dan is 42 mm tall while the Steely Dan is shorter at 38 mm :hmm:

What do you mean when you say that "the blackleaf is more forgiving on the logo"?

That other NV desined in austria grinder also looks sweet,it has fewer teeth and looks liek they have secured a better grip for grinding
Is having fewer teeth a good or a bad thing?

I just noticed that the Steely Dan version of the Black Leaf grinders seem to have fewer teeth than the non-Steely Dan ones:

Sry for late reply again. I was told by the seller teeth are identical .You are probably looking at different sizes. By more forgiving i meant it is smaller :),just two letters.
Having fewer teeth makes grind coarser . Which means you proably have more control, cause it is easy to over do it with the BL 59mm ,anything more than 3 turns and it gets too fine for my preference, but i like coarser in general. If you are the lazy type i dont overfiddle with your tools, then it is perfect. If you are the guy that like rotating on forever, get fewer teeths.

This thread is a continuation of the oldFC thread. Black Leaf 'Steely Dan' SS Grinder
There are two different model that are virtually the same in function. The Black leaf series has a BL logo and comes with a pouch, while the Steely Dan has it written over it and comes with a round box. There are 39 ,49 ,59 mm sizes.
The 2 piece 59mm weights 320 grams.. You can easily use it for self defence.. So have in mind that the 4 and 5-piece models will be twice that or more.. can be had under 20 euro . VAPO-City.de has 11% discount for new commers. My experience was very positive and shipping was fast, cheap and with tracking.

The 4-piece models sizes are 38,49,59mm

The deluxe 5-piece bamboo kit which is most expensive comes with a bamboo case and in two sizes 49mm and 59mm

I recently bought this grinder after searching for a stainless solution in Europe. I ordered from German retailer verdampftnochmal.de and got a 4-piece 49 mm Steely Dan version. For those who wonder where does the name come from: "Steely Dan III from Yokohama" is the name of a "revolutionary" steam dildo in Naked Lunch from W. Burroughs.

Anyways, I had this product for about two months now and may have put around 50 grams through it. I have to say, it exceeded my expectations. The teeth are very sharp, one might even cut himself. Quality of the material is great, even though grinder didn't come polished or throughoutly cleaned. The individual pieces are easy to unscrew and screw back without a need of much aligning. The threading is deep, so there is no risk of accidental opening. What I really dig is the case, in which the grinder sits tightly. This version comes with a carbon fibre style case with a quality zipper, which for me personally is super useful as I travel at least twice a week and (obviously) need to bring my grinder around. Here comes what most people don't realize if they haven't owned a steel grinder before: this thing is really heavy. It's so heavy to the point that it's not practical to carry around without the case if you don't want to damage the grinder or it to crush something anyway.

The grind consistency is rather coarse, ideal for my Dynavap. If I want a finer grind for my Volcano, I flip it upside down and grind that way then turn it back and let herbs fall down. Grinder's chamber size is big enough to meet any requirements of a longer session with either. Ground material is not overly torn and destroyed afer processing, the trichomes stay relatively intact. It has no problem crushing bigger buds and does so smoothly. I think it's the sharpness and sheer weight that makes you not feel a thing when turning this piece.

I have yet to clean it but seeing how little residue is being left on the walls even after moist nugs, it can't be worse than other grinders - actually rather the opposite should be true. The only pieces of the grinder showing visible wear are the screen (clogs up a little, especially on the sides) and the nylon ring on which the top slides (which are both excluded from the warranty btw). Other than that, the grinder seems very durable, as expected.

Overall, great quality and performance for fair price (around €45). Time will tell if it really is as good as I think of it now. But if it's not, I will come with an update. Untill then, I will continue to grind with it every day. Peace!
