Finer the better? Looking to maxamize my green
It's just me but I always grind my cannabis to a little bigger than a cornmeal consistency when using in my vaporizers.
Depends on the vape, and the desired performance.
Are you looking for bigger clouds in fewer draws, or whispy hits with more flavor?
With my E-Nano, I sometimes grind fine with my SCS turned sideways for finer grinding when I desire bigger clouds (to show off for friends who still combust). But when I'm chasing flavor, I like to toss a whole unground nugget in the stem and break it up between hits while stirring.
This yields whispy hits, but the flavor is MUCH better throughout the whole session
(Note, not all vapes can handle whole unground nuggets)
Edit - just saw you said you were looking to maximize your efficiency. I suggest a medium fine grind (not powder, but not too coarse)
I would just grind as fine as your screen will allow.
The screen just separates kief. If you're using a screen grinder then you have holes for the ground bud to pass through, which means you won't get a fine grind unless you turn it upside down and just keep grinding. Even then the moisture content of the plant material is the determining factor. I f the herb is fresh and moist, you can forget about getting a fine grind, since only dry herb can be ground into a fine consistency. Most vapes don't need a really fine grind (the Magic Flight is the major exception).
I read that as: "as fine as your screen [on your bowl] will allow."
I am with Ratchett, in that it all depends on the vape. All are different, what are you using?
Thank you guys! Got to this thread a little late but I appreciate all the input.
I can choose from the FlowerMate, Titan-2 or a Volcano Digit (my 3 dailys)
@max Fresh and moist bud never vapes too well for me... I always let moist pickups air dry for a few days or if it is a lot in a jar with a packet of silica gel taped to the top.
@FlyingLow gets what I meant. Sorry that may have not been the best wording, I didn't mean grind so fine that you could press bud through a kief screen!
Finer grinds have always gotten better clouds for me, out of the vapes I have tried. I have tried every grind style in the e-nano and it milks best with finer and tamped down just a tiny bit, although I have also tried just hand breaking up herb and using it... perhaps that was a more potent taste but it was not cloudier.
I can't see how a fine grind would ever hurt vapor production as it allows for more surface area with vapeable oils to be exposed to the hot air that will pass through it.
So yea, I still say as fine as the screen in your vape will allow (be that screen 4 holes in glass or micron measured stainless steel) will get you the best vapor production. It is all personal preference though. I'm sure everyone has their own favorite grind style.
They're not all different. Anything with a decent convection component (any of the dozens I've used anyway) is fine with a coarse grind. All you need to do is inspect your ABV. If you've vaped for a sufficient time, with a sufficient temp, and still have ABV that's not the appropriate shade of brown, grind a little finer.
That'll work, but all you really have to do, assuming you get the grind consistency you want from moist bud, is vape a little longer. You won't get much but taste until the moisture gets vaped, but nothing wrong with that. Letting it dry is definitely necessary if you were grinding for the Magic Flight though. You can only get a really fine grind from dry herb.
