Sorry for bumping a kind of old thread, but I joined this site because of it and was hoping the OP was still around to answer a few questions and give me a little feedback.

I'm using a dual coil RDA. I read this thread and immediately tried a build with the steel cable. First off, I bought galvanized steel cable from the hardware store, not stainless. Don't use that stuff because it tastes god awful and is probably has toxic levels of zinc. I could be wrong on this one but I abandoned the cable build, which was 1/16 cable, a wrap of 400 mesh SS cloth, and 4 wraps of 30 gauge kanthal.

Right now, I have a VV/VW mod (my mechanical is in the mail), that will fire down to .8 ohms. I had really good results with it using a 3mm silica wick wrapped in SS mesh with 5 wraps of 30 gauge Kanthal. I was able to vaporize my BHO and get great hits. It doesn't quite compare to hitting a nail, though.

My questions for the OP are:

Do I really need your setup to get hits on par with hitting a nail?

I don't want to invest any more money in this stuff, especially batteries. Will I be able to get nail-like effects with my IMR batteries, 28 gauge Kanthal, and silica and SS mesh?

Last but not least, what are your thoughts on using the galvanized steel cable? Do you think zinc toxicity is a possible issue?

Thanks for reading this and sorry for bumping a month old thread.

Yes Haywood is a mad genius in many things but as usual I keep learning from this man. I still say its the delivery method with the concentrate. before you go too titan give pure gold a try. it will never hurt.

    So here's my setup:[IMG] [IMG]

So this is a Kamry K101 mechanical mod with an IGO-W RDA. I run it with these Efest IRM 2000 mAh batteries. I have no idea what their maximum current is, and have no desire to really push it. The coil is just 4 wraps of 28 gauge Kanthal around a silica wick, which gets me .5 ohms. This draws 7.4 amps which I'm sure isn't too hard on an IMR. I've tried doing SS mesh over the wick too. This thing does rip, but it's only good for 1, or maybe 2 hits per load. I've read posts where people claim they can get upwards of 10 hits from a single load, and that's what I'd like to do here. Any suggestions on what to build would be greatly appreciated.

I just got a K101, I like it feels good.
You could try cooling your coil down if your looking for smaller and more hits, .5 ohm must be a bit unwieldy. You could try a coil at like 1 to 2ohm and see if you like it better, oil batteries coil everything should last longer at lower power.

The wick is tightly wrapped and oxidized stainless steel mesh. I wrapped each wick 4 times with 26ga kanthal and hit the .8 ohms I was aiming for on the nose!

I have one of these in transit to me ... http://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10005571/1436801-immortalizer-rda-rebuildable-dripping-atomizer ... and will be testing gr 2 titanium resistance wire with FC-2000 wick.
I'm hoping the tank's design + the materials will be the ultimate diy oil vape.

I really want t start do re buildable dripp attomizers for wax, is this the best option out there now? http://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10005571/1436801-immortalizer-rda-rebuildable-dripping-atomizer I was wondering how you liked yours?
I also have been into e cigs for a long time but have avoided re buildables .... Can you point me toward instruction on how to build one for wax and do you have a link to exactly which supplies I would need to build more? wicks etc..

    thanks

I also noticed this one it look like it has bigger air holes- http://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10005256/1436802-trident-24k-gold-plated-rebuildable-dripping

I started by reading through this thread then I researched the hell out of rebuilding rda/rbas using Google and YouTube. I never found a really good guide but YouTube definitely helped out a lot.

I personally like the look of the immortalizer because the coil will lay across the center of the tank rather than off to the side. It is an expensive tank tho and my cheaper tanks work great.

You will need resistance wire and wick and both of those can be bought all over the place. I got 26ga kanthal wire and 24ga gr2 titanium wire from amazon and stainless steel mesh from eBay but if you do stainless steel wick you end up having to do more work and need more gear like a torch to oxidize the wick.

It's a lot of fun .... Google is your best friend right now. Good luck! Hope that helped a bit

Whoa cool thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately with my hours getting cut and holiday madness I haven't been able to get anything other than an occasional eighth of flower, so everything I'm posting is from my experiences with the last bit of BHO I picked up a few weeks ago :(

Since my last post in this thread, I've learned some neat things!

The K-101 is an awesome device for both cannabis concentrates and nicotine.

Galvanized steel cable doesn't contain anywhere near the toxic levels of zinc I was worried about. In fact, the amount you'd be inhaling by using it as a wick would be good for your immune system. (I'm serious about this shit -- I work at a high end health food store and have immense resources in this area).

I can get 3-4 good hits off a single coil build with galv cable wrapped in 400 SS mesh, with 8 wraps of 28ga Kanthal -- this gives me between .9 and 1.2 ohms on a dual coil build. As Vape4Health pointed out, higher resistance gives you more hits, but less intense ones.

I can do a dual coil build on my RDA that hits every bit as good as a nail hooked up to a bong. A 0.5 ohm dual coil setup will fucking wreck you, but it's a single serve application. I honestly still use my Atmos when I'm gonna have to light up a lot of people.

Another note on the K-101, since another poster here has one:

Some batteries are too fat for the K-101. Interstate Batteries sells these awesome 2200 MaH 18650s for 5.99 a piece that work great in my flashlights, but they're too fat for my K-101. I'm thinking about buying another mechanical mod for that reason, because they're top tier batteries for cheap.

Detonator, If you're gonna start using e-cigs for oil/wax, take it slow and steady. I get pretty much everything from myvaporstore(dot)com because their promo codes are all over the net, but I get just as much stuff from eBay. You need a mechanical (i.e. no circuit boards) body (AKA mod) and a rebuildable dripping atomizer. When shopping for a RDA, keep in mind that the simpler it is, the better it will be for cannabinoids.

The biggest issue with this setup is that the battery system is pricey. It's an awesome system and these batteries are great for flashlights too, but you're going to have to spend around 20 bucks on a good charger. I recommend the Nitecore intellicharger (for the sake of full disclosure, I'm a huge fan of Nitecore flashlights).

Rechargeable lithium ion batteries are a huge, and somewhat intimidating world. There's been a lot of talk about batteries in this thread, and it's mostly esoteric. For a novice, PLEASE only use 18650 batteries. Smaller sizes are trickier. I'd recommend an IMR (lithium manganese) or a protected (built in over discharge protection) 18650. This shit is no joke, I accidentally shorted a coil on my setup and the arc ate into one of the terminals on my RDA pretty deep. As a general rule of thumb, stick to the familiar electronics brands (Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, etc). Efest makes outstanding IMR batteries, which use safe chemistry that practically eliminates the chance of cascade failures (exploding batteries!).

No doubt you've heard about "cloud chasing" (using extremely low resistance in an unprotected circuit to create shitloads of vapor). This has become a fad in the e-cig world and is not to be taken lightly. This is essentially what the OP is doing with his concentrates, and it is not without its hazards. Lithium ion batteries are very powerful devices and they have the potential to cause serious bodily harm if they fail. Fortunately for the casual user, it's unlikely that we'd tax the battery to the point of it failing, but I was brought up on construction sites, and I never fucked around with a table saw until I appreciated how badly it could potentially hurt me.

As a final thought, FUCK FASTTECH! They sell counterfiet products and there are plenty of reputable vendors right here in The States. Just think about where those extra few bucks go if you buy from an American company. Be careful, and happy vaping!

    HDRS

PS, if you'd like any info on the finer points of using galvanized cable and SS mesh, shoot me a PM. The one secret I will post, is that I'm a woodworker and I build lots of kief boxes. I get all of my SS mesh from Grainger. They have the highest quality mesh at the best price.

Hey there, new to all this. Have a new mod and rba with some 2mm silica wick and 28 ga kenthal in the mail. i guess ill just start there and learn the basics of coil building before i try any additional metals to get better hits. I'm worried because I bought clone stuff, but thats ok. cheapness was important during aforementioned basic learning phase. Couple initial questions I'm eager to find out while they are in transit:

Will I be able to double-over wick within coils and/or wrap it around posts to hold more concentrate? or are these more for 1 hit quit types of deals? I see people say anywhere from 2-3 hits to 5-6 to 8-10 puffs.

I had an Atmos raw for an e-cig and yea i guess it was the best hitting one for my concentrates, certainly the most durable. How much better on a scale of 1 - 10 is this new mod gonna be?

i got some batteries (links to ebay), to get down to this .5 ohm number, are there any 18650 batteries that aren't advisable for this? The only thing I concern myself with is a short. cant wait to experiment with different types of coils though. i have some good ideas.

From what I've read sub ohm is too much for ultrafires. LiMN (IMR) batteries are the way to go for safe sub ohm vaping. Here's a link to the best of the best IMO and they don't cost much more than the ultrafires you linked to.

Are you sure those are IMRs? I don't see the words IMR or manganese anywhere on that page. Also 30 peak amps is fuckin huge. Those are some badass batteries but if you accidentally short your coil with that in it could get ugly. I've had excellent experience with the Efest batteries. They're a little up there as far as price goes, but I don't mind paying for safety. Cheap batteries belong in flashlights, not low resistance vape setups.

Here's a link to the batteries I really like http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00DS...obile/191-8754441-2716856?pc_redir=1388003451

Cool I'll have to check those out. The Efests are made in China and I think that for the most part, Japanese made tech is a lot better. I just ordered another 860 lumen flashlight and I only own 3 18650s ATM, so I'd like to buy a few more, and maybe an 18350 or 2 to utilize my K101's telescopic functionality for stealth vaping. I'm thinking about getting another RDA specifically for nicotine, because a local shop near me makes fresh juice out of pure VG, which IMO is vastly superior to PG for reasons I won't go into, and my favorite flavor handles high temps really well. I like to play it safe with sub-ohm builds. I'd never use anything besides IMR batteries in a mechanical mod and I'm always sure to switch batteries frequently and never let them discharge too much.

Back to the subject of concentrates, has anyone here ever vaped Rick Simpson oil off of an RDA? My friend is giving me a little bit and I'd intended to eat it, but I'm curious as to how well it vapes.

hving a rda building class in a vape shop in town on the 3rd of jan. going to check it out waiting to pull the trigger an a mec mod maybe an astro or somtn, but really haven't seen any builds of coils that can fit more than a dab or 2. really want like a vertical coil with mesh bucket in it to hold the oil or sometn. was looking into the liquidizer formula was thinking if I just turn my wax liquid I could dripp any coil with availability to change the design up.

Most rdas are pretty wide and having the air intake on the side of the tank helps since you don't need to worry about oil dripping down through the intake hole like with most cannabis specific atomizers. You can use this to your advantage by building a vertical coil, as you said, and having the wick dipping down where the oil will be pooling. I'm able to pack the hell out of the bottom portion of my rdas and get 10 - 20 + hits depending on how big of hits I take and the size of the tank.

I find rdas are muuuuch less finnicky than the sr71 too ... just pack 'n go as long as you have your wicking and coil setup well. No cool down hits, no coil coming up the cylinder, no worrying about packing too much and there is a large enough market for ecigs to where even the name brand parts are much more reasonably priced. Even my cheap $5 clone tanks feel very sturdy and look really nice. I personally have no problem using clone tanks and think some people are a little too paranoid as I don't believe that the metal pieces of the tank will ever get hot enough to off gas but to each their own. I'm looking for the best flavor atm ... once I lock in a combo I absolutely love I may consider buying a legit name brand tank of that clone.

Good luck with the class ... have fun

Nice. So it's a 3 post with vertical coils. What do you use for a wick? I've found that the cable and SS mesh wick setup definitely holds the most, and after 10 or so good hits the metal taste is totally gone. My friend didn't give me enough Rick Simpson oil to try vaping it, but I'd still like to know if anyone has done this and how it works. I'm also thinking about about the oil that collects in the drip well. It undergoes some sort of change because it never solidifies. I wonder if you can eat that like RSO...

So, I am a complete idiot when it comes to building these things. I own an Omicron and like it, but would like to build my own more powerful setup.

Is there a link, or set of links for the exact parts I would need to build one? I am familiar with Fast Tech and some of the other sites, but oblivious as to what I need to order.

I realize this is probably a pain in the ass , so if no one replies, it's cool. :)

It's stainless steel mesh wrapped super tight ... it wicks really well and there is a slight metalic flavor that goes away after a few hits. That's why I'm going to start using fc2000 wick on my next build.

Edit: don't know about rick Simpson oil never tried it ...

Hey guys thought I'd report back since this is pretty much the only place i find people talking about concentrates in these rdas. Thanks for the revisited discussion on batts, I also stumbled across a great video for anyone wanting to know about batteries, power, and safety. Very thorough, somewhat redundant for anyone who's done minimal research.

What kind of coils are you guys that use wax's / crumbles finding work best besides SS cable? I have only silica atm and 28ga kenthal. I want to try ribbon kenthal and build a "wider/flatter" coil and use ss mesh on silica and see how that works.

Also are we not able to post pictures of what these look like loaded up? I notice any pics in this old thread never show it loaded or being used. The only thing I really have to go off of is this joker LOL!

Not that I should talk, I got the mech mod and those cheap-o batteries in the mail and threw a (probably) 2+ ohm coil in there that has no ability for air flow. I just needed somethin to vape until tomorrow afternoon when everything else should be showing up :( http://imgur.com/ma3Jb6U <- lol

I'd suggest reading through this thread and then researching rebuilding RDA/rbas using Google and YouTube. I never found a definitive guide but the info is out there.

    -You will need:
    -rda or rba
-Mod battery (get a much mod if you want to build sub ohm coils otherwise you can use any mod)
    -18650 or 18350 imr batteries
    -resistance wire
    -wick

It is very simple and self explanatory to put them together ... just take your length of wick, wrap the resistance wire around the wick as many times as is necessary for your desired resistance and install the coil you have just created by sliding both ends of the resistance wire into the negative and positive terminals inside the tank.

Hope that helps get you started

Look into "Genesis wick building" that will bring you upto date on the ideas of building a coil/wick.

You ecig guys if you get a chance to try a AGAt3 it puts the t2 to shame, that and some flat ribbon kanthal and I have the best tasting build that I have personally vaped from. The ribbon looks like it gets the wick hot instead of the wire being scorched, the whole wick boils with this ribbon.

Tips to add, torch ss mesh before and after you roll it and very lightly torch your resistance wire too, helps take some spring out of it.

i was very close to ordering a K100. the 510 and eGo connection being a big selling point for me. i was very close until i found this: https://www.fasttech.com/p/1452203

im currently using a magneto clone and really love it. im running bottom coil clearomizers for oil/liquid and bholt attys for solids. anyway, the K100 was very appealing to me, but i really wanted to keep it slim like my mag clone so when i saw the cheapo mech mod linked above i jumped on it. should be here this week. not really about RDA or RBAs, but i couldnt help myself.
