Most people around where I am use NIBO to do their runs and it makes nasty crackly oil with a bad aftertaste. I buy cases of London (which as I learned from a distributor; is the exact same product as Colibri rebranded) every couple of months and save quite a bit of money that way.

BURNZOMATIC 35% N-butane 65% isobutanes $3.98 at home depot in US
Vector is 18% propane and "filtering" does nothing to gasses
As for crackle, Vacuum purge your oil folks (while it is warm enough to just slide around your container)

Are you talking about the stuff they sell right next to their torches?

Ja, its not super-critical co2 or hexane but it get the job done well with no residue. Test it on a mirror by spraying it for a couple seconds, then let the frost melt look for any residue that is not water. Whatever butane you choose just remember to look up it's MSDS.

Is this the right stuff?

As I don't have a vac I'll probably purge by heating in a pan of water or with my LSV so I'd like to make sure I get the right stuff. Any help is much appreciated.

Hm, I can't get to that specific auction listing, but I would assume that it is geniune colibri being sold.

This is what the cans I use look like for reference:

It looks like this so maybe it's not genuine.

I guess the 90ml cans might look different from the 250/300ml cans but I'm just not sure.

Since I can get the 250ml cans of Newport for the same price as the 90ml cans of Collibri I just wanted to ask if anyone had used both brands and noticed any differences? I'd rather not pay nearly three times the price for something if I don't have to.

Also does anyone have any tips for judging when you've put enough butane through the material? I'd rather not put more butane through than I have to so I can minimize contaminants.

Cant say about the brands, but best way to tell if your done is put ur finger in the exit stream. If its sticky/tacky after ur finger dries then spray a bit more, if its clean there would be nothing left.

Hey, I thought i'd add another one to the list. I have been using it for a few weeks now and have had nothing but the best results. Whip-It (the same people who make the chargers) now have Butane. The one I use is the Premium (best one).

1) it comes in 400ml cans (more than all the others combined)
2) it has no impurities
3) it is backed by a big company, not just some small no name brand

I would take a moment to look into it, it's new.

I've posted a pic of the packaging so you can spot it.

I thought we could start a thread and list off the good to go brands of butane that we know are ready to be used to make our lovely oils.

What to look for on the bottle when you are checking an unknown brand:
A label saying "near zero impurities"
it written on the bottle that is is 50 ppm or less impurities

The mirror test:
This is a standard test you can do to see what level of impurities you have in your unknown quality can of butane.
1. Spray the butane (a 1 second blast or something short) so that it blasts onto a mirror. It will spray a rig on butane on the glass and go white.
2. Wait for the butane to evaporate into the air. now look at what is left behind on the mirror
3. If you see any discoloration/white rings these are the impurities (make sure you clean the mirror first of course right?)

Note: Now I recommend you try this with an accepted can of butane too because they do not leave invisible marks either. there WILL be some residual on the mirror even with these types! So I suggest you try it with 2 cans (One you know is good to go and your tester can of fuel) so that you can fairly compare and judge for yourself.

Brands that are acceptable according to users here on FC:
Colibri
London
Newport
Silver Match
Vector

Brands from the Keen World marketing site:
Colibri
Colton
Cora
CTC
Davidoff
David Ross
Dunhill
IMCO
K2
Newport
Sarome
Silver Match
Unilight
Win

Give me more brands that you guys use and I will add em to the list!

Here in Canada you buy a 12 pack case of butane cans (300ml) for 65 bucks taxes in. that works out to 5.40 CDN a can.

Oh no worries, I just thought i'd share it with the world. It's a UK product but a San Francisco company is selling it. It is available in the US and UK, however I think they are looking for distributors. If you know anyone recommend it!

Was using newport, then did a trial with colibri, now returning to newport. I had nothing but good results with it. The colibri was more expensive, but I found it less efficiently then the newport ones(seemed to get less pressure in my tube?)...:2c:

tepictoton,
has anyone herd of whip it butane 5x think there is 7 and even 10x. used it on a run it actually came out nice. I am a Newport fan but haved used crappy power5x in a pinch 'half the price' but noticed this Whip It tane was very pleasant no oder or left over residual taste. it sais its cold filtered? not sure what that means

About $36 including shipping for the same amount in X7. Not a factor as you still save a boat load money and you control how well made your medicine is!

I can buy butane here in Chinatown for less than $1 a can.

I'll gladly pay more for less residual content and less ppm. :2c:

I really only prefer to use Lucienne and Newport. I actually prefer Lucienne, it has tested cleaner than Newport according to the studies graywolf at skunkpharmresearch has done, and it's even a bit cheaper. Same distributor/distiller(Keen). I think all the butane made in the U.K. with the "near zero impurities" logo is made in the same facility, just different blends of hydrocarbons, per the purchasers request.

http://www.keen-newport.com/keenprivatelabel.html hell, the can they show looks like Colibri without the label

U.K. made butane FTW. With how strict/common sense some of the EU regulations and restriction are I definitely trust U.K. butane over Korean crap, matters to me not if the label says vector, I still see the made in Korea and unless I am testing every can I purchase I cannot trust Korea to care about my butane quality. And then there is the whole controversy of the found "mystery oil" or mineral oil as many have been calling it. I wouldn't be surprised to find more of this mystery oil in butane from Korea.

Some of you may be interested in Capital Butane. http://capitalbutane.com/

They claim it as N-Tane, however it does contain some iso-butane. No propane though, which can be a bad thing because propane is also a good solvent for extractions and apparently helps pull terpenes.

No testing done for residual content on the Capital butane yet though.

Here is too much useful information :D http://skunkpharmresearch.com/bho-mystery-oil/

and just for fun http://www.luciennebutane.com/ yes, you read that correctly. "won't taint the flavor of your cigar, tobacco, or BHO extraction" LMAO

I've tried about every can peops are talking about here. Between Newport and Colibri me and some fellow extractors decided a little while back that we could notice a distinct flavor difference, running batches side by side, same strain over a decent period of time. Giving the edge to Colbri in the end. The both boil off at about the same rate and produced near identical looking batches... but Colibri just tasted better, it's is all we use now.

Whip-It has a 5, 9, and ultra refined... north sea they call ultra refined stuff... I heard they're offerring that in 400ML bottles which could make it a little more cost effective though I've yet to actually find any. We did some test on the ultra refined (white bottles, the 300ml variety tho) and it came out very clean, I'd definitely recommend it... haven't tried the 5x/9x tho.

Tested Lucienne a while back too cause it's just so cheap for a Keen near zero product, you're right, anything with that label is from keen. We thought it boiled off a little slower than Newport/Colibri but produced near identical result, and for a lot cheaper.

Incidentally we started ordering our colibri off of butanesource.com, was using ebay prior to that but had some hassles with one of the sellers there... basically the same price at their master case level and free shipping... they have a bunch of other 'tane up there as well.

No testing done for residual content on the Capital butane yet though.

PLEASE let us know testing results from Capital N-butane... been real curious about that one lately... need to just order some myself I think... and that's way too fuckin' funny in that Lucienne ad lol... oh, so it's not just for lighters? lol

MYSTERY OIL CONTROVERSY
***Our n-Butane supplier(right here in the United States) had given us their assurance our product would not contain any "Mystery Oil." After personally running two different tests, one open loop @ 12 total cans dispensed, and a second test in a closed loop system with 20 cans dispensed, we found NO TRACES OF ANY MYSTERY OIL!

From most of what I have read, you need more than 12 cans to get a large enough sample of this "mystery oil" to be able to test it. So that's not a really huge claim. and FWIW there is a small percent is ISO-Butane in Capital but that shouldn't concern anyone who is blasting with cans, as that is in every canned butane.

From http://skunkpharmresearch.com/bho-mystery-oil/ "Well, 72 cans were enough to get a good sample and I will drop it off at a HPLC/MS lab today."

So Greywolf needed to dry run 6 cases of canned butane to get enough "mystery oil" to even test and sample. I think Capital can afford to run at least 72 cans, since it is their product and they don't have to pay for it AND the testing like greywolf and others. The fact that they didn't even do a sample of 2 cases at once is a bit odd. Numbers tend to ease my mind more than "After personally running two different tests... we found NO TRACES OF ANY MYSTERY OIL!" does.

If this Capital butane is everything they say it is, then it could become popular. However, the lack of n-propane will turn some extract artist away as many prefer a mixed gas solvent. The link I posted also has some info in Capital Butane.

"Capital N-butane #1 had 0.008g of residue
Capital N-butane, USA, 6.6oz/187g can, reads on the bottom “13337″

Capital N-butane #2 had 0.009g of residue
Capital N-butane, USA, 6.6oz/187g can, reads on the bottom “13337″"

Lucienne still had lower residual content, however one of the four cans sampled test at 0.03g, which is quite a bit higher than the other 3 cans tested. So, there are definitely some inconsistencies. The other three samples of Lucienne tested even lower than the other brands did, and yes that includes Vector and Colibri. Now that we have numbers and not just brand loyalty, word of mouth, and advertising our eyes are starting to open a bit more. Lucienne is cheaper too. Really, seems too good to be true, especially with the new addition of their metal nozzle's and the inclusion of "flints" in the cap.

I, like others, am very interested to see more independent testing of Capital butane.

edit: here's the Lucienne numbers.

"Lucienne #1 had 0.03g of residue
Lucienne, England, 300ml can, reads on the bottom “DOM 16.07.13 13:28″

Lucienne #2 had 0.002g of residue
Lucienne, England, 300ml can, reads on the bottom “DOM 16.07.13 13:28″

Lucienne #3 had 0.001g of residue
Lucienne, England, 300ml can, reads on the bottom “DOM 16.07.13 13:28″

Lucienne #4 had <0.001g residue
Lucienne, England, 300ml can, reads on the bottom “DOM 16.07.13 13:28″"
